| | | NYC Gathering!!! Folks! I have heard back from Stephanie and the date for the next NYC
gathering is for Saturday night, May 17th. I will immediately start
scouting a restaurant or two to consider as well as a place for some
karioke since I sense we are game for it!
If you can make this evening and want to come, please do post here so
I can start gathering 'the list' so I'll have a clue as to how many to
make reservations for.
Later!

Cheapest hotel that I know of in the city-- at least, in a decent location,
where you're not likely to get your throat cut or trip over crack whores--
is the Cosmo. Stayed there 3 times. Tiny rooms, dinky bathrooms, no
amenities to speak of, street parking, no room service... you get the idea.
But it's pretty clean and right near the subway, and only a few dollar cab
ride from most of what you'll want to see, anyway.
It's been there forever, and was used as a staging center for rescue and
cleanup crews at Ground Zero, which is just a couple blocks away. http://www.cosmohotel.com/default.aspx?pg=home |

Gee, you make it sound so...nice. They should put you on the
commercials
"I'm Jef and I stay at the Cosmo because it's got fewer crack whores
than the other hotels. Plus it's pretty clean."
I sure wish I could come to this get together. Maybe some day.

Well, until and unless I somehow (miraculously) achieve wealth beyond even
my most conservative dreams, I tend to opt for fairly cheap lodgings,
preferring to spend my hard-won and ill-gotten gains on food or sightseeing
or other amusements. I do appreciate a secure, clean place, but I don't care
about frills.
In my younger days, I traveled extensively, often hitchhiking around the
country from situation to situation, sleeping when and where I was able.
Sometimes on floors, or in cars or in parks. Once in an abandoned house that
had only 2 standing walls. Money was often scarce or non-existent, and when
I had the price of a room, I sometimes stayed at some *exceedingly*
questionable places, lemme tellya.
I recall an overnight sojourn at the Flamingo Hotel (It billed itself as
"the working man's hotel"-- if your work was selling heroin or peddling your
ass, I guess...) in Atlanta in 1971, during which time I actually felt
compelled to carry my sheath knife with me into the men's room-- the only
place that had a shower I could use. What ambience the place had! I found a
half-empty pint bottle of white port under the mattress on the bed in my
room. I could hear wretched, wet coughing from next door, and moans and
screams -- but not pleasant, sexually excited ones-- emanating from
elsewhere down the hall. I'd been on the road for 2 or three days without a
shower, and I decided to chance the one at the Flamingo.
The men's room was... hell on earth. Anyone see TRAIN SPOTTING? Like that,
but less tidy. Forget using the toilet; I'd just... hold it until some
unnamed time in the future. But I did want a shower, and a chance to wash
out some socks and skivvies. I had the horrors of encountering any other
denizen of this place, and I decided I'd do this as fast as humanly
possible.
In I went, stripped and hung my clothes across the top of the toilet stall
wall-- mostly because I couldn't figure out how to bathe fully clothed. So:
Jump under the tepid, measly trickle of water from the rusted showerhead,
try not to focus on the mossy jungle of hair and cigarette butts on the
shower floor, lather, brace for expected assault, scrub socks and underpants
with bar soap, wring them out under the trickle of water, whirl around
quickly to see if anyone had tiptoed in, rinse body, grab towel, split... I
actually climbed over passed out men and women in the stairway. I left the
next morning with still damp, soapy socks and briefs on. A lovely feeling,
let me tell you.
I am happy that I no longer live hand-to-mouth, that I have dispensed with
my blind-to-danger, youthful sense of adventure, and know enough (and can
generally afford) to choose better lodgings.
New York City has some of the most expensive hotel rooms per square foot of
anyplace on the planet, I think. The trade-off of trying to find a
convenient, safe (where is "safe" any more...?) location that doesn't cost
the equivalent of someone's freshman year college tuition can be a real
headache.
This place (COSMOPOLITAN) is cheaper than the chain hotels. It's maybe a few
bucks more than some dismal places that are really, really skeezy and which
just barely qualify as hotels-- mostly due to a sign out front and/or a live
human at the front desk. It's old and kind of shabby, a bit threadbare here
and there, but fairly well-kept. The effort is visible, anyway. And it's
small. God, is it small. Like it was originally designed for... troupes of
vaudeville midgets or something. But it's affordable. |

I'm checking prices just because I would *love* to see NYC, but I actually
have no hope of being there.
It's just, a few years ago this same situation came up in another ng that I
have frequented for all of my ng life, and for whatever reason DH said to
go, and I did, and it was wonderful. I flew in to Baltimore, we had our get
together, and my hosts then told me I couldn't visit without seeing some of
DC. They kept me up until 4am hurridly driving from monument to monument -
I made tracings of names on the Wall at midnight, and took pics at the Iwo
Jima monument (my brothers are both Marines) and saw several others and
walked down the street in Georgetown. I left the next morning, not quite
there even 24 hours but it was wonderful and I will never forget it.
So, it doesn't hurt to check prices.
With hope and heart,
Kathleen

I might just have to FLY up (If I can afford the tick) - Wouldnt be
able to drive - (Cant get off work for that length of time)
I would have to leave Sunny with an Aquaintance down here in FL....
(hate Flying - Love to Drive though)
I'll let you know if this is realistic for me sometime this week.
Sounds GREAT though !

Joyhton told me about these plans for a NYC meet. I'm checking out
airfares from Michigan. So far, the cheapest i've found is around
$250.00. I'll keep checking. Jef, I appreciate the Lodging tip you
gave. If I'm able to come, I plan to book a room there. I've had a
couple of other real life meets. One in Ohio (with Pommy, and
BCJoyce). I've met with DDSteve a couple of times as well. And
PatB! I'll keep watching this group for more information.
Thanks everybody.

| | | Re: NYC Gathering!!! Hey Mike. Yeah! I didn't miss this one. I've been stuck in upstate
NY for 2 years of a hellish commute and am moving back to the city
this week. I will be in a party mood for at least a year to make up
for the Middletown, NY blues. You live in the Flat Iron district? Do
you know the Broom Street bar in SoHo? But maybe its too small.
Anyway count me in. I don't get off work until 7:00 on Saturdays
though. I made 8Y this Sunday along with my quit buddy Ally. Woo
Hoo.

when I was 21. My boyfriend coincidently was 17 at the time. He was
a prodigy from Sweden finishing an honorary degree at Swathmore. He
also spoke 17 languages. Maybe I should go there for my 17Y.

"cast iron district." But again it may be too small. They have
Nachos supreme to die for. Great charchol broiled cheesburgers.
Homemade pecan pie.

| | | Re: NYC Gathering!!! Well, folks, I have done some looking around with a restaurant guide I
use often and believe I may have a restaurant that can please most any
palate and not require a mortgage. I want to visit it this weekend
and will report then.
As to hotels, I personally do not think the Cosmopolitan is the best
bargain in NYC by a long stretch. Hotel 17, which has already been
mentioned, is usually frequented by European travelers and I do know
some of the rooms share a bath but others have their own. Still,
finding cheap housing/hotel in NYC is very difficult. One website I
often refer folk to is http://new-york.hotelscheap.org/ I live not
too far from Penn Station so if any of you do get a place near me, I
would be more than glad to give a walking tour of the Madison Square
area on Sunday afternoon. Two places very near to me [the next block
over] are the Madison Hotel and the Gershwin Hotel. The Madison is
somewhat like Hotel 17 but the Gershwin tries to be more artsy-
fartsy. Hey, it IS NYC! <G>
When I do nail down the restaurant [and probable karioke too!] I will
start a final tread so that I can then get a serious headcount for
reservations.
