Default The one thing you miss the least about smoking/The one thing youlove about being quit

A few of our buddies have been having a rough time of it and this
addiction of ours has reeled a couple back a bit. There but for the
grace of God go us all. It's easy to forget what it was like when you
smoked when you get some time under your belt. So I start this thread to
remind us of what we all felt like when we smoked. And what thing really
makes us smile about being quit.

The thing I miss the least is the morning coughing, I would hawk up
EVERY morning when I smoked without fail, sometimes until I retched.

The thing I love most about quitting is the HUGE self respect it has
given me.

The thing I think I miss the least is the insanity of addiction. The
roller coater of mini-withdrawals followed by the momentary
gratification, followed with another mini-withdrawal. I lived and
planned my whole life around that roller coaster for 25 years.

One thing I love the most? Freedom! No more tug-of-war. No more
roller coaster. No more obsession. Oh, I've also grown quite
accustomed to that breathing thing. The DEEP breathing. The ability
to laugh without coughing. The lungs are quite happy.

The thing I miss the least is not being able to sleep with my GMF
because of my cough. Oh, and feeling like a rat in a trap when I was
in a situation where I couldn't smoke (like office meetings) and
wasn't able to leave.

That's a tough one. A simple response as my favorite thing would be
being able to take a clean deep breath. I say that because I seem to
sigh a lot so it's a constant reminder that I DON'T SMOKE AND I'M
DAMNED GLAD OF IT!!!

I don't miss a damn thing. Not one damn thing.

Ditto. Knowing I'm no longer a slave to a tube of paper filled with
poison is immensely freeing.

Good question, I think that the thing that I miss the least is the ball &
chain factor. Being tied to that addiction and getting nothing out of it
except feeling lousy and smelling bad and being poorer because of it. The
thing I like the most is in general feeling better, and when I see those
poor slubs that are outside in the cold just to get a fix, that I don't have
to do that anymore.

Miss the least? How horseshit I felt nearly all the time, and the con I had
to run on myself to convince myself that smoking was "okay". I try to
remember that every day, lest I lose a bit of gratitude.

And this screen looks weird. Oh right...it's the new monitor I just bought.

I say that because I seem to sigh a lot
Snip ends

Being able to take a really deep breath. It has been years since I
could do that.

And a sense of pride in myself. I did something I wasn't sure, at one
point, COULD be done.

I miss the least of spending over $100 a week on that crap ( that was
cheapass roll your own and I under guessed the amount)
I love being able to breath I didn't realize I couldn't breath well until I
quit.

Doesn't it feel great, though? There's something so clean about it.

It does feel great. It's so funny to me that now I can pick out a
smoker at 100 paces. My sniffer is so much better than it used to
be!

Oh wow, that's tough. It's got to be either the "trapped rat" thing Sue
was talking about ("I gotta get outta here! I need a smoke NOW!") or
the wheezing when I lay down to sleep at night. Yup. It's the
wheezing. It would keep me up forever before I could ignore it enough
to fall asleep. How deluded was I?

Yep, self-respect has increased ten-fold. But the libido phase ain't
that bad. ;-P

Thanks for starting this thread, Chris. I have to agree with everyone
that one of the things I most appreciate is not sounding like death
warmed over in the morning hacking and hawking and scaring the cat. I
think my self-respect is the thing I most like about being smober with
the money saved a nice second.

I miss the least about not smoking: The constant coughing. I am back
on the wagon for 3 days and I am still coughing as though I had
pneumonia
I like the best about not smoking: Not having that ugly saliva twisted
into the wrong flavor, the taste of death, incarnate.
But, on a positive note, I like smelling right and fresh.

The thing I miss the least is feeling like a total loser when I was sitting
outside having a smoke before and after I went to the gym. going to the gym
5 days a week to improve my health was important to me, and I felt like a
huge hypocrite still smoking. Now when I get to the gym, I do it with my
head held high. (my ass is still dragging on the floor, but that is a
different story)

What really makes me smile about my quit....that is a tough one, there are
so many things. Having my 13 year old writing about how proud he is of us.
Seeing my husbands joyful face when he rides is motorcycle. The sheer fun
that Steve and I have had quitting, yes I said fun. But most of all, I feel
like someone who was let out of jail and is learning to enjoy life on the
outside again.

This is a great thread, Chris. Thanks for making me count my blessings, my
friend.

hugs and kisses

I have more than one...

1. Not waking up with my mouth feeling like an ashtray.
2. No coughing.
3. Taking deep breaths
4. Long walks with ease
5. Not having to wonder if I put my smoke out, wondering if I'll burn
muy house down.
6. Not having to carry around a pack and a lighter
7. Not smelling like an ashtray.
8. No more cig burns in the car.
9. Not having to buy smokes.

I could go on all day, but the best part is the freedom, and knowing
that I can live without smoking thee pieces of shice.
