| | | OT: I need to buy a new laptop And have no idea how to go about it.
So what I want is something light and small, with an audio driver so I
can play Marv's music and the occasional movie. Something with a long
battery life (this one, Sony ViAO, goes only 15 minutes on a full
charge). Something that is heavy duty enough to serve as my sole
daily computer (which this Sony has). I don't do major spreadsheets
or calculations (anything beyond SSPS). Mostly use for Word documents
and internet. Some picture stuff but not much.
Does anyone have any ideas? i HATE Dells - bad experience. Also had a
bad experience with an HP. I'd appreciate it if you have any
particular laptops in mind that you let me know and/or if you know of
a reputable site where I can trust the reviews.
Thank you! (I got 2072.95 to put toward it!)

Just check some online reviews.
BEWARE of discount chain places selling laptops with marginal specs

There have been recent scandals and revelations about the "Vista

What version of Linux are you using?
I've got SuSE on a machine in my workshop that does most of what I need
-- my wife and kids have Vista (no choice) on their machines -- I hate
it, personally. My laptop came with XP, the sales guy said it was a
free upgrade to Vista to which I've kindly declined.

Tim, just a great porn site/software package
I'm kidding. It is some horrid statistical software package that
random professors continue to torture me with, demanding I use it.

I agree with you on Vista, I had XP on my other Laptop and I loved it
compared with the new one on Vista, now if you teach me to convert
I'll be a convert any day.
Just installing Verizon High Speed, after having dial-up for years -
what a blessing and actually it is less then the dial-up at least for
the first 6 months and then it's only $3 more.
I have http://www.averatec.com/ the previous one was also Averatec-
older model (purchased with money saved from stinky sticks :-)) but it
crashed in December and they sent me a new one. I do love their size
and weight and I know the batterie lasts at least for 2 hours, cause I
watched a movie.
I purchased mine at Staples, it's not in stores yet, but you can buy
directly from them. It has built in camera and mike, and just found
out it has voice recognition, have not tried it yet, but if my
arthritis gets any worse I will.
Happy shopping!

I bought an Acer Aspire over a year ago and it runs without any probs.
I've recently upgraded the ram to 3 gigs. It runs XP like a top. It
was the demo, last of, so I picked it up for $500. I removed all the
vendor 'helper apps' which load up when XP boots.
HP & Compaq (which is now part of HP) I've had issues with in a work
environment -- rebooting usually ended up in literally kicking the
stupid box out of frustration (it sat on the floor by the desk) ...
there were scuff marks up the front of it.
Check reviews -- settle on a manufacturer, check for whats available in
your price range. More ram the better too. epinions.com usually has a
bunch of user reviews for most things you can buy.
Cheers & Hugs,
Marvie

just want an xp operating system. I don't even know of or understand

I'm not a computer geek so here's my simple response. I just bought a
new Toshiba Satellite. It was just over $600. Plus everything they
add. It is huge (I wanted huge, nice big monitor). I bought the
display and they knocked a few hundred $$ off it. It has much memory,
great speed, and plays anything I need it to. It has Vista which has
given me no problems at all.
HPs have given me heartache for too long which is why I went with a
different brand.
My cat jumped on it yesterday and ripped three keys off of it. Sigh...

My dog (psycho Maltese) ran across a my Sony and flipped off the "T,"
For weeks I would just press down on the little wires underneath the
plastic "T" When I finally replaced it It cost several hundred
dollars as I had to replace the entire keyboard.
Then she ran across it again and flipped off the power button. That
put the whole damn machine out of commission. I've spaced on how much
THAT one cost me.
And on top of everything she is CRAZY. I mean seriously. Don't buy
the partyline that all Malteses are these docile little love bugs,

XP will no longer be available for sale with new computers in June
buy your laptop SOON, before you end up with a computer that can't
recognize your printer, scanner, and 1/2 the software you run!

Debian.
Go to http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com . If setting up a new machine, just
throw a Windows CD in it, install onto the onto the blank HD. Do not
bother activating it, just use it to get online.
Debian is FREE, with Open Office, Ximian Email, etc.etc and free
updates every few days.
Vista is the most wonderful thing that ever happened to Apple and
Linux.
Vista is a crock of empty hype, overhead, and DRM intrusion, and may
be just the thing to end the bloatware tyranny.
The first machine I upgraded was a fossilized PIII 733. Had I put
Debian on it earlier I probably would not have bothered with the last
two new machines (One I built) because the old thing runs like a Cray
on Debian.

This may be good advice, Steph, since I was going to recommed Dell
since we have and use hundreds of them at work here and they seem to
work great but with XP is preferable. Thistime has good advice I
think. You should be able to get a monster mahcine for $1700 or so,
you son't need to spend $2k.
This is not as good as going to look for them, but its all I can do at
this stage. |

SPSS is statistics package for the social sciences. Its a pretty
powerful package but not that easy to learn. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
