| | | OT - my own stupid little survey...
If I'd posed this question several years ago people that know me would
be asking, "What have YOU been smoking?" Now that I no longer smoke
ANYTHING I can say I came up with this questions all by myself, with
no artifical inspiration. :-)
Since the year 2000 rolled around it seems like there is no definitive
way to say what the current year is. Some say this year is "two
thousand eight." Others say, "Twenty oh eight." Two years from now
it will be "two thousand ten" or "twenty ten."
How do you say it? I say "two thousand eight."

I say 2 double Oh 8 but can't see me saying 2 Oh 10 in two years time,
so then I'd probably go for twenty ten - you seem to have an
interesting fascination with numbers )

Usually two thousand eight but sometimes we say just "the 3rd" or "the
7th" year.

Generally over this side of the pond where we speak English we add an "and"
so we say "two thousand and eight" but we wont in two thousand and ten!

Followed by Two Thousand Onety-One ???
.....and its Two Thousand Oh Eight (just as it was Nineteen Oh Eight
a hundred years ago).

| | | Re: OT - my own stupid little survey... Sometimes it is just plain " Oh-Eight" most often though it is " Two
Thousand And Eight" for me. I do not use the " Twenty Oh-Eight" version at
all.
I have know some who have used a more technical variety of the beast when
they write " 2K+8"
For me it is simplicity I favor, at the end of the day so " Oh-Eight" works
best for me. |

That is a fascinating observation. You are so right!

Yes, "two thousand eight" here, but in 2010, it will become "twenty ten"
just as we say "1910". What I wonder is when we will begin referring
to years in THIS century by just the last two digits....
"I was born in '64",
"My dad was born in '45"
"I got married in '88"
etcetera, etcetera, etcetera....

2001, I think I usually said two thousand and two thousand and one
[probably because I was so used to the book/movie] but by 02, I did
find that twenty-o-two just sounded better and I say it's twenty o-
eight for now. 2010 will be twenty-ten in my vocabulary unless there
is an uprising on what is right....

I think you're right Cindy...and in that case it actually should be
Twenty-Oh-Eight, not Two thousand oh eight. I used to hear old
timers refer to the early years of the 1900's as "Nineteen and
twenty eight" - I suspect they had a similar challenge doing the
transition from the 1800's to the 1900's.
Time is all manmade anyway and doesn't exist. Only the here and now
exists.
And I choose not to smoke here and now.

Seems like it was easier last century, eh?
