| | | OT- New Baby in the house - long Well, this morning I let my dog out in his yard to do whatever he
does, barking at the neighbors and the dog accross the canal and his
duty and run around for a while, then he usually comes back to the
door to ask his way back in.
Not today, I made my coffee and my breakfast mush, and there I'm
standing at the kitchen sink looking out the backyard, there he is
down the steps to the dock (he knows he's not allowed down there) his
tail wagging out of control, so what the heck is he looking at, a
fish?
So I scramble to throw on my shorts and top to go look. There
klinging to the seawall for dear life is this Quaker Parrot
baby :-))))) He was too far down for me to reach so I race to the
shed to get myself a fishnet. Shed's locked, so I run in the house to
get the key, back out to the shed - wrong key! Back in the house,
finally found the right key, back to she shed, unlock the door, grab
the first net in sight, down to the seawall, all I could think, what
if he got swept away???
No, thank God, there he was, I reach down with the net, and just like
he knew, he/she climbed into the net. I brough him up to the
gardenhose and gave him a good bath to get the saltwater off.
He is screaming his lungs out (they can, you have no idea, just
thought of all the neighbors waking up). So there I am with a
screaming bird, there are about 7 or 8 grown Quakers circling above
screaming also.
What do I do. I have this old rusty cage, so first I put him in
there, brought him and the cage tino the house on the coffee table -
so cute! But what do I do, throw him out after he's dry? Keep him,
they are very smart and can be tought to talk. What do I feed
him..... and on and on. Got on the web and printed out the most
pertinent info on feeding,
My dog thinks it's his bird and all he want's to do is sniff him. He
shows no sign of aggression, mind you that's the same dog that just
again killed a black snake, yup another one, this one ended up in the
canal - food for the fishes.
Went to the petshop and got some seeds, I have all kinds of fruit and
veggies in the house, which they are supposed to eat.
Came back home and took him out of the cage, got in my recliner and
put him on my chest, where he promptly fell asleep. Right now he's on
top of the printer inside a towel fast asleep, he did not try to eat
anything so far but I managed to give him some water.
Woman at the store told me not to take him back out because the hawks
will get him for sure. He/she is soo soft and cuddly, never had a
bird cuddle with me before.
So what will I do?
Will post some pics as soon as he wakes up and I can take some decent
pics. In the meantime www.quakerparrots.com

I'm going to worry about your parrot.
He needs to get back outside ASAP when it is
safe. Maybe there's somebody in your area that
can help. Maybe you can keep him in your house?
Either/or - in my opinion.

| | | Re: OT- New Baby in the house - long If you think it's a lost pet, post a "found" ad on http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/911ParrotAlert/
Also contact local veterinarian offices, particularly those who are
avian-certified - look here for listings: http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/
What I'm concerned about is if it's a baby and not weaned yet, it may not
know how to eat and might need to be handfed. If it doesn't start eating by
tomorrow, you need to find someone who can handfeed it immediately - birds
can starve to death if they don't eat for 48 hours.
I have a few local friends in avian groups (I'm a hobby breeder), if you
can't find its owner let me know - I can probably locate someone willing to
adopt it. Quakers are cute and sweet when theyr'e babies, but adults can be
pretty formidable.

| | | Re: OT- New Baby in the house - long If nobody claims it, and it's domesticated, you might want to keep
him/her. My friend does parrot rescue, and has quite a few herself,
including 2 african greys, and at least another dozen or so others, it's
always a party over there. She got a new puppy and the birds learned to
tease him, "go for a walk?", "want a treat?". They are truly incredible
birds, if you don't mind the racket and enjoy the company your life will
be richer.

| | | Re: OT- New Baby in the house - long Lizzy! It's really hard to say what is best to do from the
information you've given us. If the parrot was domesticated then
keeping it and enjoying it is an option. But if the bird was wild
then as soon as it's big enough to go on it's own, it's best to set it
free. And, then, if it returns then it obviously has decided to live
with you.

I did not mention that one of the houses on the other side have a
large Parrot comune (they always build a huge nest and each parent has
their own entry - just like a condo)
This baby is wild, and he just pooped on my printer.- lol
Well I got these seeds, but turns out, he does not want to bother with
them, so I had to put them in the processor and made kind of bablem,
he ate some orange and nectarine and also water, but I had to feed him
by hand.
Then he slept on my chest, while I was watching TV, slept all night in
a container, because the cage is rusty and I don't want him to get
sick. Quiet as a mouse so far, but I know the noise they can make, I
get flyby's every day. Doing his streching exercises and just cute as
a button.
I think his left eye has a problem looks a little smaller then the
right, so may be the reason he could not navigate well.
Well he had his breakfast and tomorrow I will buy some babyfood, to
much work making my own. Right now he's taking a nap. From the looks
I will keep him/her for now, dog thinks it's his bird anyhow, he is
very gentil with it.
Thanks for all your advise!
Love Lizzy
Oh, Mike, I found a way to shrink those pic's to a more managable size. |

| | | Re: OT- New Baby in the house - long Lizzy! Sounds like you have your parrot well taken care of. I hope
it turns out well and he/she does fly off as it gets older since it
was 'born wild'. Of course, durng this intervention period he/she
just might decide you are the 'life of Riley' and you'll have a new
buddy in the house. <G> I am glad too to read that you did get the
pix reduced in size.
