| | | OT News server (2nd try, diff. server)
One thing that kept me from posting as much as before is that
sometimes I just had that unpleasant feeling of being ignored.
Now I have found out that my newsserver is responsible for it. Many of
my posts never showed up on Google (which I took as a reference). I
have two responses on Mike's 5-4-3-2-1 thred and neither one showed
up, for example.
It surprised me too, for I have considered it's incoming completion
rather excellent.
So untill complaining at my ISP bears fruit, can anyone recommend a
free newsserver that is reliable and allows posting? Commercial ones
are for now out of the question, unfortunately.

Thanks but I would almost rather start smoking again than use usenet

Stick a .com after talkaboutsupport and it will work. Thanks for the
link, BTW. |

Besides, Google is also much faster, it has 4 messages in this thread
while talkaboutsupport only has the original post. Which is completely
beyond the point since speed is not an essential usenet quality and
you were only trying to help. But this message will help me test the
temporary server I now use for posting.

OK final thought about this: it's only an alternative interface since
talkaboutsupport pulls all it's articles from Google anyway.
No surprise really.

It seems that my news server has failed to propagate all my messages
for at least 2 days now. And it might not be the first time. Some
messages I have now reposted with another news server (located in
China, no less).
I would like to apologize to all people who thought I did not respond
to them.

I use Agent, but that is not the problem. The problem is that I did
use the news server (news.iskon.hr) provided by my local ISP (Iskon).
It's message completion was allways good so I never doubted it, but
all the messages from the past 2 days I posted via news.iskon.hr still
did not show up.
I used the commercial Easynews service for years but right now it's
not an option.

Got to "Slycks" guide for newsgroups and browse. Yottanews offers 1 gig
a month but only download, no posting. Usenet-news and at least 2 others
offer non-expiring blocks, but you have to shell out money, less than $5
I think, and there is one that is 50mb a day, with a one time setup of
3.95.
I'm having consistency problems since moving and getting a new server,
but I'm not complaining as my speed is soo fast. Even IE seems fast, I
am not looking under my desk for the pedal to go faster!
If I find one, I will let you know.

Thanks Beth! The various free news server web sites helped, cause all
I need is somewhere to post to. I still pull new headers from my local
one (news.iskon.hr).
I just hoped there was another news.individual.net that is still
completely free. It's not the money really, not even in the case of
Easynews (only $10 a month). It's that I don't have a valid credit
card right now, being unemployed for almost half a year.

I've signed up with Usenet Monster ... cheap, works. Like really cheap.
And it works ... as far as I can tell. I verify once in awhile with
Google that I'm not missing anything ...

Thanks Marvin, seems to be a nice service but as I said in my other

BTW I swear by Easynews!

I have a Loewe TV whose remote has crapped out. I am giving it a last

The thing consists of a crystal and an IC. The crystal is of a very
rare frequency that I simply can't get hold of locally.
Question is, what does statistic say, is it the little IC or the
crystal that go bad?
I hate generic remotes and can't get an original either.

Most remotes run on a 455khz, some on 500khz. The crystals themselves
usually don't go bad, so much as the connections to them or broken
leads of the crystals. Check the solder around and at the IR LED.
Check solder of batter terminals where they attach to the PCB. Remove
the neoprene button sheet and make sure there is no fluid between the
button pad and the PCB (most common reason for remote failure -
spilled drinks on remote). After that check PCB close for cracks and
cut runs. Past that, it's the micro controller IC, which most you
can't get.
Now see, your not being ignored, you're being educated!
Uh, after I think about it... in school I always thought I was being
ignored :-0

I'll get back to you on this. I can't find the sucker right now, but
I'm positive the freq. was much weirder than that.
How do you test a crystal anyway? Other than swapping of course.
