| | | OT: Obsessed with the EcoSystem Ever since DavidL. pointed me towards the Eco-friendly website last
week...I've been more determined than ever to make a difference in
helping to save the environment. Here are the small things that I am
going to do to try to help reduce the damage that my household does to
the environment:
1) Wash all my clothes in COLD water. An easy switch to make that
will also save me money!
2) Do all my lawnmowing with the reel mower.
3) Buy all cloth napkins and quit using paper napkins. I'm also
going to use cleaning rags rather than paper towels.
4) I will use the energy-saver cycle on my dishwasher.
5) I will recycle more consistently.
6) I will hang dry my clothes and only use the dryer when I
absolutely must.
7) I will replace my light bulbs with flourescent ones as the
incandescents burn out.
8) I will turn off my lights every time I leave a room.
9) I will use my blinds in an energy efficient manner.
10) I will switch to a biodegradable dishwasher detergent
So...there are 10 very easy things that I am going to try to fulfil.
None of them involve any significant sacrifice and all should be easy
to do. Many of them I haven't been doing up until this week.
So...there is my part to help the environment!
PreciousKittyKat =^..^=
Nine months, one week, two days, 4 hours, 2 minutes and 22 seconds.
5663 cigarettes not smoked, saving $1,699.01. Life saved: 2 weeks, 5
days, 15 hours, 55 minutes.
11) Oh yeah! how could I forget the biggest one??? No more
polluting the air with the stench of cigarette smoke! No more
littering filthy cigarette butts all over the place! Yeah!!!
P.S. I think as one gets further on in their quit...fixing things
besides oneself must become more important. I'm really into this
whole going green thing right now. I doubt I would have been as
interested, had I still been smoking. Quitting smoking has led me
down many interesting paths! photography, family geneology, eco-
friendly living...all sorts of roads I wouldn't have travelled had I
not quit smoking.

| | | Re: Obsessed with the EcoSystem That is really a very good list. Simple and comprehensive.
My SO follows me around and cleans up after me in an environmentally
considerate manner. I mean, I'm pretty good with turning lights off and
using cold water, but he's in charge of recycling -- it just takes too big a
chunk out of my day, and my office generates a LOT of paper, which he drives
to the local recycling center.
We hit a bump in the lightbulb-replacement process, though. We were doing
fine with converting reading areas, artwork areas, etc., to flourescent, but
the night I walked into my kitchen and found it had changed color, I drew
the line. "We have to change back to incandescent in the kitchen," I told
him.
"But I can see so well in this light!" (He bakes; I cook.)
"I refuse to prepare food under this light. I refuse to EAT food that has
been prepared in this light."
"But this is a really significant energy savings."
"Fuck energy savings. I'd rather be blind than cook in this light."
"Just try it for a little while."
"I'd rather be blind."
So we have incandescent light in the kitchen.
ep oooooooof

You set one hell of an example.....
Let me know what you really think about those new bulbs.
Which kind did you buy?
Are they safe?
I hear there are issues if they are broken.
What kind of dishwasher detergent are you gonna use.
I get frequent complaints about the fumes with the old chemical stuff.
Do your recyclers accept pizza boxes?
How about composting?
I've been chicken to get started on that process. |

My wife is very particular about the color of the light too.
I've heard they were starting to address this issue with the new
bulbs.
Let me know if your SO finds a solution. |

and I too follow many of the ways to be more eco-friendly as you do.
I did see from your photo that it appears you have a lot of water
bottles? I use a Brita filter and feel that my water is as good as it
can be yet does not use all that plastic. While you are recycling the
bottles [yeah] they still comes from petroleum products which requires
a lot of energy to produce. One of the major food co-ops in Brooklyn
recently voted to no longer carry bottled water because of the carbon
footprint it uses.
Just my 3-cent opinion and pet peeve.

Crohn's disease, and he swears that filtering his water reduces his flares
dramatically.
Personally, I had to get the Brita pitcher after I quit smoking. I
absolutely could not tolerate the smell of tap water, once my sense of smell
came back.

Yeah Mike... and now they say the filtered water is safer than the
bottled too.

Yes...that photo had damning evidence of the wayward ways of my diet.
Believe it or not, I actually consume more than Coke and

I could use a little more willpower concerning my diet, you
think?!?

Well, I am not sure what brand they are. I bought most of them at
either Walmart or Target. I like them in areas where you don't need
instant on and instant off light...like a bathroom. I had one in the
bathroom and my husband took it out and put it in a closet. He said
it took too long to light up. Overall, I've been satisfied with the
change over. The bathroom light was the only area where we maintained
the incandescent lights.
I am using Palmolive ECO: http://www.colgate.com/app/Palmolive...etergents.cwsp.
Seems to do a nice job. No complaints so far.
Yep, my recyclers accept pizza boxes. I have never had them turned
away. I wish they would accept cereal boxes...I have so many of them
that I have to throw in the garbage
Never tried composting...I think that would be too much for me!

Yes, I thought about this as well. It seems pretty counter-
productive, doesn't it? And, it is only recently that I have started
purchasing bottled water (about the past month). My son is busy
playing outside and busy with more physical activities...he has asked
for bottled water to bring to school with him. I send him two bottles/
day. My husband is also drinking more water as a weight-loss help and
he likes the convenience of the bottled water. I don't think there is
anything wrong with the taste of our city water and have no need for
bottled water myself...other than the convenience.
Maybe a recommendation for a good water bottle? I've heard those
Nalgene bottles are horrible for the environment as well as bad for
one's health. Never know WHAT to do! lol.
I do agree...I will revisit the whole bottled water issue. Maybe I
will just reuse these bottles over and over and over...at least that
would keep them out of the landfill for awhile and extend their life.
More to think about! Good food for thought!

This is exactly what my SO does. We like to kayak, hike, and bicycle, so we
always have a few bottles of frozen (filtered) water in the freezer, which
melts while we're out in the heat to give us nice, cold water as the day
goes on. I drink a lot of club soda, so that tends to be our default water
bottle, as well as standard sports bottles (which fit in the bikes'
water-bottle holders). You'll be amazed how long these re-used bottles will
last (which will also remind you of how long they stay in the landfill!)

I always use cloth napkins. Use very few paper towels.

I do that, too.

We haven't any choice around here. Three trash cans - recyclables,
the yard waste can and then just regular garbage. I was already
recycling plastic water bottles (not mine - I don't drink water) by
giving them to a friend who recycles. I don't use aluminum cans
(don't drink soda). I drink Tejava cold tea which comes in bottles
and are now recycled through the city collection along with all the
paper. Pretty soon our sidewalks are going to be lined with shoulder
to shoulder garbage cans.

That's another no chance in hell.

I have fluorescents in kitchen because it's set up for the tube type.
I also have fluorescent in the "toilet" rooms. I don't like them
because they take too damned long to turn on. I have fluorescents in
this room (computer/office whatever). My vanity lights are old
fashioned as are the ones in the ceiling fans. They will stay that
way. I was willing to put them in the hall (three fixtures) but they
wouldn't fit.

No.

I do that.

I do none of the above to help the environment but I applaud anyone
for doing so. I do them because the city demands it (apparently they
have hired a garbage cop) or to save money.

| | | Re: Obsessed with the EcoSystem Awesome PKK!!! I just started a new job at an extremely conservation minded
company, and it has helped me make some changes too.
We are trying very hard to not use many paper plates.
We bought cloth grocery bags - no more tears and spilling groceries!! They
hold more too!
I am considering recycling...
I do use florescent bulbs, cold water for laundry (except for whites), and
since I had a cleaning business I found rags at Sam's Club that already have
the finished edges - NICE! (I remember my Mom would use any little scrap of
clothing! Not me!)
We bought blinds about 6mo ago and they have made all the difference in the
world. Got them at JCPenney's when they were on sale for $18 a window
(roman shades).
I now try to run errands together and use my gas more wisely.
I want the reel mower!!! No dishwasher... the cloth napkins didn't take
here, yet but I can try again.
You've inspired me - keep it up!
With hope and heart,
Kathleen

I have the same problem with the CF bulbs. The other problem is that
they don't fit in my lamps! or that they're UGLY. Why can't they make
them the same size and shape as an incandescent bulb? Just put another
layer of glass around the spiral tube for Christ's sake! I spent $10 to
buy a 3-way bulb for my reading light and it is too tall to fit in the
lamp because it's nearly 2 inches taller than an incandescent bulb!
On the other hand, we do recycle. Our city garbage picks it up along
with the trash. They take the cereal and cracker boxes, almost any kind
of paper and plastic...but not pizza boxes because of the food
contamination.

in from the store, you can only use them a limited time as they will
leach toxins the longer you use them. That is not to say you can't
use them 4-5 times but from what I have read, that would be my
personal limit. For serious water bottle use, I recommend you check
out either a camelback if you are outside doing strenous work or
exercise such as cycling or a dedicated water bottle like you find in
a bicycle shop. They are heavy duty, can be cleaned out easily and
last 'forever'. Sure the do cost a few bucks but they pay for
themselves in the long run on by economic as well as ecological
measures.

We have a Reverse Osmosis system under the kitchen sink. Don't know
what it cost to install (was here when we moved in), but it's only $100
once a year for them to flush it and change the filters. We love it,
plus it gives us good water for the coffee pot, cooking, etc. We also
have water on the fridge. It tastes just fine.
As for the water bottles...Nalgene swears that the news stuff is just a
bunch of hype, and we've certainly always used those bottles for
scouting, but now we're finding that the Camelback pouches and Platypus
bags work very well. They're light weight, durable, and pack well. The
only bad thing is that they will break if you fall directly on them,
which the boys figured out the hard way. But they are pretty rugged
in the long run, and it's what most of the backpackers are using these
days.... http://tinyurl.com/63dzpn |

I'm talking about, go to any biking site and you'll find them.
Interestingly, the NY Times has an editorial on the subject today. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/op...ml?ref=opinion
While it's an opinion, I do think that they state the heart of the
problem.
