Default OT: Reel Lawn mowers!

....I'm in quite a talkative mood this evening. I worked the PM shift
and am still all wound up from work. It was kind of crazy this
evening...and it takes me awhile to wind down.

Another thing I've discovered that gives me a great deal of
pleasure...I swear, I'm going to get committed for admitting I like so
many little domestic chores...but...

....I just LOVE my new REEL lawn mower.

I have a new-found sense of independence! I don't have enough UMPH!
to pull start our big, stupid, ugly gas mower. I just can't get the
thing started. Even if I could, I hate lawn mowers. My mom almost
lost an eye from having a rock fly up from underneath their old 1960's
style Craftsman lawnmower. That was frightening. Everytime my
husband drags out the lawnmower, I round up the dogs and the kids to
make sure no one is around when he mows. I go in the house. I hate
watching how careless people can be with lawnmowers...little kids
outside...rocks and sticks flying out of those things...ugh.

Another thing...my husband...has a different philosophy about mowing
than I do!!! He likes to mow...very rarely! I like to keep the yard
neat and tidy at all times. This leads to little
disagreements...usually, he refers to it as NAGGING and BITCHING!

Now that I have this baby...I can mow WHENEVER I FEEL LIKE IT!!!

To be fair, my husband warned me that...this would involve work. I
would be the engine of this little fellow...and that sticks will stop
the thing. (He had a reel mower as a kid...I just remember them from
a childhood neighbor)...

Well...my son and I tried it out. Indeed...it does take some
work...but...the rewards are GREAT!!!

I don't have to be scared to use it.

I'm not scared for my son to use it.

It is so quiet...could mow ANYTIME and it wouldn't bother
anyone...it's little clipping sounds are actually quite peaceful.

I can listen to my iPod and mow...or, just enjoy the sounds of the
reel clipping off the grass.

I can get some EXERCISE!

I can be out in the fresh air!

I can mow the grass without asking someone to HELP me!

It is GREAT for the eco system and environment! No more nasty stinky
gas powered mower!

Yeah for reel mowers...they might make a comeback!!! I can see where
they might not be great for a big yard, but, for a little yard like
mine, it is ideal!

PKK!!!

I'm loving your posts tonight.

I just got home from work as well ... your reel mower is awesome. I
bought one for our place in the City, a 50 x 100 foot lot. I used it
for almost 10 years there. I bought a sharpening kit for it too which
I used at the start of each Spring.

They're fun. I used to give it a big push at the start of each run
and just went like gang-busters on the lawn. It took the same time as
using a gas mower. It always started, never rain out of gas or had
the electrical cord get tangled up.

Keep up the fun!

Cheers!

Do you fancy a free holiday in England.

I have at least 4 loads of laundry to wash, hang out on the line then iron,
and while they are drying the lawn could be cut.

I enjoyed your posts.

I'm glad you posted this - I've wanted one of these for a while and DH has
gently encouraged against it. We do have a riding mower that I love, but I
rarely "get" to mow because I'm so darn busy.
With hope and heart,

Somehow I'm just not quite ready to trade my John Deere tractor for a
non-powered push mower for our full acre of lawn. But I do love the
scent of freshly cut grass.

Oh I really really want one of those - I've never seen one before!
Hope they have them at Home Depot. What a fantastic idea and a great

Your meter looks awesome by the way - almost 3/4 OF WOW!!!

Great aren't they? The engineer Edwin Beard Budding invented it in 1830 in
Stroud, Gloucestershire, just up the road from me. He worked in a cloth mill
and designed a machine to cut the knap of cloth. He realised it could be
adapted to cut grass, but was afraid he would be locked up as a lunatic if
anyone saw him testing it, so he carried out his testing at night.
Incidentally, he also invented the first adjustable wrench.

So attached are we British to our lawnmowers that we even have a museum
dedicated to them (http://www.lawnmowerworld.co.uk/ ) and there are also
lawnmower races ( http://www.blmra.co.uk/ ).

I used to have to use a reel mower. Small lawn so not too bad except
when I was 9 months pregnant. I don't think I could do it now - age,
bigger yard and a slight incline in the lawn. I could do the backyard
though. GMF had given me a gas powered mower and I, too, was having
trouble pulling the cord. So, he bought me an electric mower - not
the kind with a cord, but a battery powered one. The issues I had
with that were that it wasn't very powerful so if the lawn got too
tall it choked up and died - a lot. Also, it was heavy as hell. I
still have it, but it's just in the garage. So, GMF bought me another
gas powered mower, but that one didn't "fit". The handle was too high
and my arms got tired. So, I gave that one back to him and got his
old gas powered one. I can get it started (sometimes with the aid of
starting fluid) and it does a fairly good job. Burns a lot of oil,
though and could probably be called a Belch Fire. OK, no fire but a
lot of smoke. Not at all good for the environment.
I'm glad your enjoying your lawn mower and getting such great
exercise. I prefer getting my exercise by accomplishing something
outside.

You know, I used to cut my grass bear footed. I could feel where I cut. I
don't do that anymore though. I was hard headed back in the day. I wanted
to do things by myself.
