Default OT- Teeth

Seems like we've got folks with toothaches today.
A while back you guys helped me get through the fear of having
fillings replaced in one quadrant.
Doing another tomorrow.
The first wasn't (as you guys told me) near as bad as I feared.
The teeth with new fillings do still hurt though.
I've heard it could take several months for the nerves to calm down.
In any case, so this isn't totally OT, trips to the dentist sure are
easier smokefree.
I don't have to time visits so I can huff one down right before they
call me back.
I don't have to feel guilty about the staining and smell.
I don't have to deal with cravings while I'm in the chair.

Hi David - this is not really OT at all - I had to have some major
dental surgery last year. My dentist told me the damage was totally
due to my 30 year smoking habit - if I didn't quit I would definitely
lose all my teeth - its kind of one of the top ones on my list of
reasons!

Best wishes for your dentist visit tomorrow - you'll be fine

get that toothpaste for senstive teeth and rub it on them before you go to
bed ( no rinsing) also your dentist can give you a shellack ( like a clear
coat of varnish) that will help esp with the senstive new filling.

I had a lot of dental work after I quit too. You would think I would quit
drinking sodas!

OK - here I go again. I've given this advice several times, but it's
important for those who haven't heard it before. Get and use a
Sonicare toothbrush, and use a waterpick. You can "reverse" gum
disease with that waterpick, and the dentist/periodontist won't tell
you about it. I don't know why, unless it's cause they need your
business.

For God's sake, please stop reporting these situations of adversity!
Every time I open my newsreader and scan the messages, I read about
someone's trouble and then my own happens...
Someone's old friend dies; *my* old friend dies.
Someone else's teeth screw up... and tonight I lost a crown.

I'm beginning to think just hanging around here is messing with my very
existence!

Well, all levity aside-- I had this lower, back molar that lost a filling
years and years ago. I delayed getting it fixed, and one day the back half
of the tooth cracked and broke off, partially below the gum line. The
dentist (who has since *RETIRED*... thank you very much!) told me I couldn't
get a permanent crown on it unless and until I had the impacted (but not
bothering me at all) wisdom tooth next to it removed. Why? Because it kept
sort of leaning against the broken off tooth, applying subtle but steady
pressure. Every couple of months it would just pop the temporary crown loose
and I'd have to go in and have another one fitted. I didn't want the painful
damned oral surgery that was going to be necessary to remove it in order to
make room for the permanent crown. Call me chicken. Go ahead. I'm fine with
it...

Eventually, I got proper insurance and could afford general anesthesia. I
went and had the wisdom tooth cut out, and I finally had a fine permanent
crown installed. It lasted for 12 years or so-- until the remaining portion
of the tooth abcessed beneath the crown! I had to have a root canal on it,
and they couldn't pry the crown loose, so they had to drill THROUGH it to
get at the rotten tooth and remove the root. Fascinating, no?

So, they clean it all up, and put on another crown. This one lasted for... I
guess it's more than 25 years, now, until a spot on the top surface wore
down sufficiently to start allowing food and liquids to get in between the
stump and the crown. Tonight it popped loose as I was eating dinner and I
damn near broke some other teeth chewing on it...

Gotta go find a new dentist to see if it can be patched and salvaged and
re-glued, or if they'll have to make a new one from scratch. This one spot
in my mouth has plagued me for more than 35 years!

Sigh....!

Good luck.
See if you can't bring us back a humorous story from the dentist's

I live to serve, David, my friend.
I'm not sure how amusing *this* visit will be, but I managed to wring a
chuckle or two out of a previous visit.
This is from the Summer of '05, I think....
----------------------------------------------------------

HOW NOT TO SMOKE

I have devised my own simple 11- step program, which sure kept me away from
the Marlboros during a stressful time; it may or may not work for you. 11
steps, and not 12? Yes. If 11 don't do it, then 12 sure as hell won't be any
better. Not in this particular case...

Step 1:
Visit your dentist.
This should involve only getting about 3 hours of sleep the night before,
since dental work is...well, I'm ashamed to admit it, but it's JUST
PATHOLOGICALLY TERRIFYING IN THE EXTREME. Oh, yeah-- and you've ALREADY been
told that "...the reason for that pain when you chew is that you've lost a
piece of a filling in that molar. Now, *maybe* we can save it and not have
to grind the tooth down and put a crown on. That old filling is pretty shot,
though..."

Step 2:
Be absolutely sure that your dentist uses enough Novocain that you cannot
feel your head at all. Have lots of"Whirrrrrr! Bzzzzzzz!
Zeeeee-zeeeee-zeeeeee!" noises going on in your mouth for the better part of
an hour. "This new filling material is light-activated" he says, shining
what looks like a goddam laser beam in there. "Yeah; we put in a layer of
the filling material and then we shine this light on it, and it sets right
up. Then we do another layer, and more light--and the really nice thing is
that you can eat right away!" Uh-huh; just what I want to do-- go and chow
down while my lips and tongue are on vacation somewhere. Plus, that
"light-activated" bullshit just sounds like science fiction to me. I think
he was making shadow puppets in my mouth to amuse his assistant.

Step 3:
Pay handsomely for this abuse and fabrication, and then-- because you're too
rocky for public transportation-- *walk* about 3 miles to the shopping mall
where you vowed you were going to stop and buy some printer ink. The visit
was so traumatic that a 3 mile walk seems for some reason like a GOOD
idea... Arrive there completely sweaty, out of breath, and with lips that
now feel like a catcher's mitt has been sewn to your face-- just so you're
feeling really sharp and handsome.

Step 4:
Decide that not having any feeling in your face should be balanced out by
not having any balance or language skills to speak of, and have a seat at
Chevy's. Order one of their Ultimate Margaritas- with Reposada Tequila,
fresh orange and lime juice and Cointreau. Dribble most of this down your
shirt in an attempt to make your lips form a proper seal with the rim of the
glass. Order 2 more, just so the splotches on your shirt are evenly
distributed enough to compliment the rapidly-drying sweat stains.

Step 5:
Realize that you're so seriously impaired on several levels that you're
either going to have to tell the waiter to stop laughing at you, or prepare
to defend himself. Realize that a couple of busboys are also sniggering.
Decide whether or not it's worth pretending that you've had a stroke.
Get check.
Leave.

Step 6:
Stagger to the multiplex cinema and buy a ticket for...whatever the hell is
showing next.
Forget popcorn, Raisinettes or any of that other crap. You'd probably chew
your own face off and not notice it. Make a beeline for the men's room and
sway back and forth as you belt out a few verses of Leonard Cohen's "Dress
Rehearsal Rag" (for some reason the most appropriate ditty you can think of
at the moment) as you try to simultaneously direct most of your stream into
the proper receptacle and not saturate your shoes. Hope that that object was
the urinal, and it just didn't flush for some reason, and that it really,
truly was not the trash can.

Step 7: Stagger into the theater and take a seat way in back, so you won't
alarm the other 3 people in there for the matinee. Fall asleep as the
trailers start to roll.

Step 8:
Wake up as the usher shakes you and asks you to please stop snoring because
you're annoying the other 3 people in there for the matinee.

Step 9:
Realize you're sitting thru SIN CITY-- containing quite possibly the
weirdest visuals you've seen onscreen in ages. These will cause you to snort
and hoot and laugh uproariously. And possibly inappropriately, further
upsetting the other three CRANKY, HUMORLESS BASTARDS in there for the
matinee.

Step 10:
Tell the usher to piss off (or "PIZH AUVE!" if you can't quite form the
exact words you're trying to mouth) when he comes back to ask you to quiet
down.

Step 11:
Leave; get a cab; go home and crash in the recliner until feeling returns to
your head and some semblance of sense returns to your person and demeanor.

See? You didn't smoke at all! Never even thought about it. Feel happy and
smug and pat yourself on the back. Not too vigorously, because balance is
still elusive...

Tooth trouble ain't really that off topic. Many times, hidden dental
conditions will show with people who recently quit smoking. Your gums
get oxygen rich blood again, nerves start to repair. Gum bleeds and
other dental issues aren't that uncommon to arise then. But you have
to realise, your teeth do not deteriorate because you quit smoking.
The issue was already there when you were still smoking, you just
didn't feel it.

Inky,

Free since 22/06/07. No nicotine for 6 months, 2 weeks, 3 days, 1
hour, 55 minutes and 40 seconds. That's 6002 stinkers not smoked,
saving EURO 636,39. Reclaiming 2 weeks, 6 days, 20 hours, 10 minutes.

This is absolutely true! My oral hygienist told me about it. There was
actually even some studies that showed that electric toothbrushes were
even better for your teeth than flossing. (Of course, the oral
hygienist says DO BOTH)

I had a terrible time with my teeth and gums until I switched to an Oral
B toothbrush. Now the whole family uses them and we have no problems
with our teeth or gums any more.

Well another quadrant down and the next scheduled for Feb.
I got the previous quadrant adjusted. I'll go home and test it on
some sunflower seeds.
I'm gonna start looking into the whole familiy using the rotary brush
and me getting some paste for sensitive teeth.
I need to start the kids flossing too.
Any of y'all out there with tips on that?

you can buy those flossing forks that already have the floss on them pretty
cheap, my kids uses these (well more than the regular string)but mostly it
has to be a habit that you need to reinforce everyday. pick a time like
after supper and make them. make it part of their allowance. i have a check
list on my fridge that the kids have to do to make extra allowance maybe
something like that
