Ramadan
I have a new co-worker who is from Iraq. He invited me to share his
evening meal of traditional Iraqi
foods made by his wife for the breaking of the fast after sundown. (It
was delicious BTW). One of the things he brought was some dates, so we
got to talking about date palms, then Cuba, then cigars, and finally
my quit.
He said that the smokers who observe Ramadam, once the time comes to
break the fast (around 8:00 P.M. here) will smoke first before they
eat, despite thier hunger. I said oh I didn't realize smoking was
prohibited during the fasting hours. He said oh yes, they are very
cranky, "We call them the untouchables, because if you touch them they
will explode"
Man that's some dedication to your religion and your addiction. Can
you imagine going cold turkey every day for a month? Like some sort of
horrible grounhog day.

Re: Ramadan
<shudder> The lengths to which cigarette addicts go, the suffering they
endure! I am so glad I'm free of that tyranny.

Re: Ramadan
It must be hard to have to wait until night time before they can smoke. I
bet they get up just on time to have their first smoke of the day.

Re: Ramadan
Interesting story, Rick. I can think of a bartender I know here in
the City who used to always take the Month of January 'off' from
smoking & drinking. Roscoe would stop on the 2nd [yeah New Year's Eve
was the last of the party for him] but then would not smoke nor drink
again until the first of February. I do think that if you did that
sort of action long enough you simply got somewhat used to it. But I
*DO* agree with EP that being smober just makes life soooo much easier
to live!

weeks, 5 days, 1 hour, 50 minutes.

So tell us about the food ......
We've had a lot of Pakistani food
here, and love it. There are several restaurants here that we frequent.
Delicious stuff, similar to some Indian foods. Is it similar or
different?

Well, let's see..There was what I thought was a sauce or gravy, but
turned out to be a soup with lentils & noodles, It was kind of thick
and tasted like a mild curry. the lentils were ground and had the
colour of chick peas, but were some other kind of lentil.
There were the dates, and some small vegetarian somosas ( store
bought), and these homemade
things vaugely like a somosa in that there was a wrapping/crust of
mashed rice & potatoes about the size of a small muffin or cupcake,
filled with ground beef, rasisns and seasonings. I think they were
deep fried. Then there was a dish of rice maybe with saffron or mild
curry as it was yellow and some chicken, and I think peas & a
sprinkling of veggies.
Oh and he forgot the tabouleh ( a salad of bulgar wheat
parsley, tomatoes etc classic middle eastern dish) !
Certainly made my frozen prefab pasta alfredo look bland.
