| | | Sad news concerning our dog :( We've been concerned about our 9 year old Boxer dog, Parker, for a
little while now. She is a little on the chuby side, but, has been
losing weight. She kept licking her paw...we thought maybe there was
a tumor developing (she has had mast cell tumors removed in the
past). Nothing there. Then, we noted she was beginning to drool, and
wherever she would sit, there would be a little pinkish tinged stain
(blood).
My husband discovered the problem on Friday. He looked inside her
mouth with a flashlight and discovered a HUGE TUMOR/GROWTH.
He immediately brought her to the vet.
It looks like it is malignant.
Biopsy Tuesday. There is a strong possibility that she may be put
down, should the tumor be too vascular...or, if the chest radiographs
show metastases in the lungs.
It doesn't look good.
She has been such a wonderful dog. We got her from a Boxer rescue
group. She has been a delight since day one.
Please keep Parker in your thoughts.

is a fairly mature age for a boxer -- they tend to have respiratory and
cardio problems -- but a tumor is a whole 'nother thing. I hope Parker will
live many more healthy, happy years. Do keep us posted.

PKK, warm hugs to you and Parker too. I know what it's like to lose a
companion animal. Years and years ago, I had two ginger cats called
Orville and Wilber, the Right Brothers. At the time we were living in
a Brooklyn brownstone and renovating it at the same time. There was a
lot of coming and going, with the workers in and out all day. I was
working at the time, so I was out of the house most of the day. My
sons were in school and there was someone there to greet them when
they came home.
One night, there was no sign of Orville. I looked all over the house,
in the backyard, all up and down the block. No Orville. We had no
choice but to keep asking people and putting fliers up on lampposts.
Someone called and said that a cat had been seen in the cellar of
another brownstone up the street. We went there and found him huddled
on a ledge in the celler, all bedraggled and hungry. He had been gone
for almost a week. We took him home, but he never recovered from his
excursion. He died about a week later.
Our pets become part of our families and we love them and nurture them
like children. Currently, I have only one cat, no dogs. My Mimi is
11 years old. She's is a great sleeper, but she wakes up at the least
sound. She doesn't play as much as she used to, but she always wants
to be where I am. Sometimes she tries to "help" me at the computer.
This usually means resting her head on my left hand; this makes typing
a bit difficult. If I leave the keyboard, she will try to rest her
head on that. A little spritz from the water bottle will keep her off
the keyboard.
I know you must love Parker just as I have loved all of the various
cats, dogs, snakes, geckos, goldfish, turtles, etc., that have passed
through my life. I remember Jake the Snake and Nick the Gecko very
well. They really belonged to my younger son, who took good care of
them. Reptiles don't get very attached to their humans, although Jake
would let me handle him and twine himself around my arm, but if Evan
came near Jake would stretch himself out toward his shoulder and make
the transition without ever falling off.
Just to keep this animal tale OT, Mrs. Mimi Katz, my current
housemate, has never lived in a smoking home.
I will be thinking of you and Parker.

I'll be thinking of Parker and hope it's not a huge Tumor but rather
something small that can heal.

Thanks for all the warm thoughts and good vibes sent my way and
Parker's way. She will go in early tomorrow morning to see the vet.
We just won't know...until the vet does the chest xrays, exam and
biopsy. It is so hard not knowing. I think I cried most of the
weekend. We have all shed a lot of tears for her. I just want to do
the right thing for her. I look at her and know that her life is in
our hands...I don't want her to suffer. I just want her to get
better...BUT...at this point, we are leaving the final recommendation
up to our vet, because we don't know what we should do. I guess we
won't until he gets in there to really take a good look. I will try
to post tomorrow to let you know what happens.
As for my quit...I have no intentions of smoking. Whether I smoke or
not will have no bearing on what will happen with Parker. It wouldn't
make me feel better, and it wouldn't help her any, either. It will
not change anything. So, as to the smoking, I have no desire to add
that burden to this sad situation.
I am hoping that this is something that our vet can fix. I am hoping
that this tumor can be removed. I am hoping that it is not
malignant. She is a good dog who has done nothing but be a loyal
friend and companion to our family.

Update on Parker:
She is still with us. I am am filled with gratitude.
Her chest xrays were negative (no metastases). The vet proceded with
the removal of the tumor. He thinks he got it all. He hopes that he
did. He believes it is malignant.
This could go one way...or, the other.
In a best case scenario, the wound in her mouth will form normal
granulation tissue and will heal up uneventfully. In a worst case
scenario, the tumor/malignancy will regrow in an aggressive manner.
We have bought Parker some time. I think we did the right thing. I
stopped by to see her before I went to work. She was very sedated,
receiving pain meds...had some bleeding/swelling from her mouth. I
was so happy to see her alive. She briefly looked up at me...and
wagged her tail. She couldn't do much more than that. She will
remain at the vet overnight. I should be able to pick her up tomorrow
after work.
My son (10 years old), called me from the school x 3 today. He was
worried sick about his dog. I wish I could be home when his dad
brings him to go see Parker at the vet this evening. He will be so
excited. My daughter will be thrilled. We all are.
I know this...will probably not be the end of the story...but, for
now, the vet thought this was an appropriate step to take. I hope we
did the right thing. We could have elected to euthanize her, but, did
not. I hope by doing this we haven't prolonged suffering. It is so
hard having this beautiful animal's life in our hands...what if we
didn't do the right thing...?
My vet said he remains very concerned...I don't think he feels very
confidant about her prognosis...
For now, thank you all for your warm thoughts, kind
words...everything.
I will give her extra hugs and kisses when I get her home tomorrow.

| | | Re: Sad news concerning our dog :( I'm sure you did the right thing. The vet has a good idea of how much or
little pain might be involved in the surgery, as well as the prognosis, so
IMHO you did right to listen to his advice.
Personally, I think you have every reason to be optimistic. I've seen many
non-metastatic tumors removed from cats and dogs, and they go on to have
plenty of quality time, and often a "normal" life span.

with myself over my own dog, who has multiple severe problems but is not
actually sick enough for me to feel comfortable doing "the deed." I am
reassured by others over and over again that when the time is right for
that he will let me know. Parker will too.
Hoping for the best possible outcome here, and keeping Parker and your

Edna made me feel better.
You have 13 months tomorrow.
1st I've heard of this 10 yr old son.
I hope he wasn't calling from a cel phone.
Show us a pic of Parker when he gets home tomorrow.
