Default Switching from Nicoderm patches to gum or lozenges??

Hi, Hey I'm back. So I can use some advice if anyone has he
experienece with this. I'm 3 days away from finishing phase1 of the
nicoderm program, I step down from 21mg to 14mg on Thursday. It's
these damn rashes I'm getting now on a constant basis. No problem for
about a month, then all of the sudden I'm getting these patch shaped
elevated welts, that itch and burn. I rub hydrocortsone cream in and
that quites the burning/itching. BUT, my legs look like a monopoly
board. Doesn't matter if I use opaque or clear. Some welts are worse
than others. I can take pictures and post them if anyone's
interested , I can, really... SO I'm thinking maybe I should try the
lozenges or gum. I've done so well w/ the patches but these welts
can't be good. Anyone ever do this? Switch in mid stream? Anyone have
good luck with the lozenges or gum? I tried gum once and it didn't do
much for me but I probably wasn't using it correctly. I'm not paying
money or supporting anyone that sells tobacco products, so no smoking
either way. My sister told me not to smoke before she passed. I'm
going to do that.
Thanks for getting me through a real rough time. It was a lousey week.
It's a little better now, but anyone that went through anything like
this knows what I'm talking about. BTW - I did have some urges last
week. Like when I sat down at the computer I was looking for he smoke
in the ashtray?? more than once. then again is was a real bad
week..Wishing you all a successful quit, hoping I can lend some supprt
to anyone I can.
Regards, Steve

I personally cannot recommend the gum, the artifcial sugar is a huge
migraine trigger. And I was doing as recommended, three to four chews
to soften it up, then up against the gums for maximum transfer of
nicotine. As for switching to the second step patches, that may work
better rash wise, as I did try out the first step and I did have some
of the rashes, the second step for me (14mg) do not have as much of a
rash. It could be from the concentration of nicotine on the patch, or
the glue itself. I'd check in with a doctor or pharmacist on that.

As for that ashtray, get rid of it! You no longer need your drug
paraphenalia (sp?) lying around tempting you. You don't smoke, it's
clutter, you are making room in your life for better things, get rid
of the bad stuff. And if I keep this up, you can hear me every
evening, down in my van by the river.

I was three weeks into my quit when I went cold turkey I bought the NRT gum
to have and I only used two pieces. It was rough and I swear I would of
smoked but I believe an angel was watching over me by hiding all of the
tobacco in the house.

Remember that you don't use the NRT gum the same way as you would regular
gum. it's a chew chew park which can be frustrating when you want to just
chomp off someone's head. use regular gum for that and the NRT gum for a few
quick fixes. Others can give you better advice on the gum than I could.

Since the patch is working except the welts I want to ask how are you
wearing them? why on the legs? did you try the back ,upper arms? what
happens there? Are you putting them on right after a shower when soap can be
still left on your skin? that sometimes can irrate more.
also differnt kinds such as clear to opeque might make a difference as can
brands. ( I know they say they are all the same but I feel I got a better
boost out of nicoderm)
I had the welts badly and fucking itching like crazy if I wore them on my
arms. my whole arm would swell up but only a mild itch at the beginning if I
wore them on my back.

Now get yourself a can beside the computer and fill it with
lollpops, gum, hard candy for when those craves happen.

that's the thing.. I don't have a single ashtray in my house!!. Don't
matter clear or opaque, I get the rash. I didn't for 4 weeks but now I
do. I'm using it on my legs, because when I used it on my arm people
were asking if I'm ok?, its quite noticable. I'm glad the next step is
a smaler patch..didn't know taht. Think I'll step down tommorow
instead of 3 days from now. can't make that big of a difference could
it??

Hi steve-o, congrats on your decision to quit and for persevering with the
patches!!!

I also got rashes from them and switched to lozenges on about week 7 as I
was becoming sensitised to the adhesive they use...

I did manage a relatively comfortable quit with lozenges, HOWEVER, be very
careful that you don't become addicted to them instead of the cigs... I did
and was hooked for well over 12 months before finally kicking the nic
addiction with a course of a herbal program called Nicobrevin...

I kept justifying my use of lozzies by saying "well they're better than
smoking" but the only one I was kidding was myself...

Keep up the great work!!

Steve,
First of all... congratulations on your quit! I quit over a month ago
and I am using the gum. It works for me. I didn't have any 'climbing the
walls' urges using the gum. I just had these empty kind of feelings when
I felt like I was unsure of what to do next... mostly at times when I
would normally smoke. I also notice that I am starting to use less of
the gum as time goes on. I hope to be able to stop within a couple of
weeks. But if I find I need it a bit longer, then I will use it a bit
longer. Not worth risking going back to smoking.

Hi Steve,
I can tell you that I dont think I would have a 2 month quit without my
lozenges. I really like the cherry ones. It might be worth a shot, switching
to them since the patch is causing you such grief. I like the lozenges
because I only get the nicotine in doses rather than steady and constant. It
also for me satisfies the oral part of quitting smoking. Good luck and let
us know if they work out ok.

Two months, one week, three days, 23 hours, 4 minutes and 2 seconds. 3598
cigarettes not smoked, saving $334.62. Life saved: 1 week, 5 days, 11 hours,
50 minutes.

Hi Steve,
I can tell you that I dont think I would have a 2 month quit without my

Life saved: 1 week, 5 days, 11 hours,
50 minutes.

Thanks everyone!!. Tommorow I step down to 14mg, looking forward to it
because it means I'll be nicotine free in 4 weeks.
Worst case scenario I'l switch to the lozenges if the rashes get to
out of hand.
Wishing you all the best and a successful quit. Screw Philip Morris,
RJ reynolds and the rest of those scmb8gs. Man it feels great to
breath again!!. Haven't coughed in weeks!!. and I can smell the ozone
again!!..I can't remember last time I did that.. must have been 25
years ago!!. What a feeling.!!
Steve
Smoke free 6 weeks and counting!!
