| | | Tough Day Second day on my new job. I am so relieved from the old job, but I have a
great sense of anxiety on the new job. The lack of complete knowledge is
putting me on the edge. I have a great deal of craving this afternoon. I
know I can fight it, and I can beat it. But, DAMN! It sure pulls very
hard. Say something to make it go away. Punch me if you have to. I'll
take the punch and the barrage of verbal anything over a stinky stick

Remember you used to need nicotine to do everything.
Now you have to relearn how to do them, or at least I did.
Good solid work is the best way to take the nicotine bull by the horns,
I always thought.
Keep up the good work.

| | | Re: Tough Day Starting a new job and embarking on the learning curve (because there
nearly always is one) is very stressful. But just think: In a month,
all this will be old hat to you, and you'll be zipping along rolling
your eyes at the newbies who just ... can't ... understand. When I
started my job, I went home and boo-hooed on the first day because I
thought I would never get it. Never ever. Last week, I found myself
fighting to stay patient with some of our new hires, who are full of
questions. "But how do you get the thingy over here?" "I don't know,
it's just fucking THERE, OK????"
Hang in there, buddy. Deep breath. This, too, shall pass.
Hugs

I hadn't heard.
Last I knew, you couldn't decide which job to take.
Congrats on getting that decision behind you. |

You're coping. Take Pride.
You're *not* smoking. Take Pride.
It would be the same for anyone, whether they smoked or not. We'd all
be anxious starting a new job. It's normal. Don't sweat it. Take
Pride.
You're managing change -- perfectly. Take Pride.
It'll get better. It'll get easier.
Cheers and Congrats on the new job,

| | | Re: Tough Day It is understandable to be anxious on the new job, but as far as the lack of
knowledge is concerned, I am sure that everyone will
understand that you will need a little more than two days to achieve the
experience required.
But, am I right in thinking that just the fact that the job was given to you
means that someone did trust you without that knowledge?
Please be a little kinder to yourself AZ! You have been through so
much, think of this job as a new start,
perhaps you will be meeting nicer people and make some good friends.
Someone said to me once that *things have the habit of changing*, I found
this to be true and hope very much that it will be the same for you.
Re. craving I can't comment, after five months I am living in fear of
relapsing, this tells you all.

You've gotten plenty of responses already and it's pretty late in the
evening where you are so I'm sure that you've made it past the bad
part by now. Tomorrow ought to be better because you will have more
familiarity with your new job. The day after will be better yet. It
will get better day by day. You know that.
I've been in the same job for 21 years because I don't want to go
through the anxiety that you're going through. I could be making more
money, be in a better job. I admire you immensely for taking on
something new. I won't punch you. I'll pat you on the back.

| | | Re: Tough Day Hey AZ,
I hope your stress is starting to abate since you posted this. I have to
tell you, I am totally in the same boat with a new job and feeling stressed
and disoriented because it's all new to me, and at the same time worried
about looking like (and bosses thinking) I don't know what I am doing. I
have to keep talking myself into realizing that I am brand new at the job
and not actually expected to know everything from the day I walk in! Though
I have to admit that I've only had limited success in convincing myself.).
It's been 5 years since the last time I started a new job, and I guess I
forgot what it's like. Other friends, who have started new jobs more
recently, report that it may take many months to really feel like you know
your way around a new job and a new workplace. That's a little daunting, I
guess, but it helped me feel more comfortable with the idea that there is a
learning curve, and that I should not expect to have ascended it so soon.
ACK. Anyway, I have felt the tug too. Not to the point of caving, no sir,
but the nicodemon has been paying me some visits. I feel like it would help
to settle my nerves, to help me take a break from the stress, to kill time
in between tasks, or even to break up the time between waking up and having
to get ready to go into work. Boy, I am so glad that I recognize the
symptoms of junkie thinking. Re-read the FAQ. It never gets old.
My solution when this has happened at work is just to go outside and walk
around the building (when it's nice) or to walk laps in the cube maze inside
the building (when it's nasty out). Or I have read AS3 on Google Groups a
bit. Seems to have helped. After a while, as I start to get to know
people, it might be that I'll take a break just by chatting with folks --
but I don't really know anyone well enough to do that yet (and I don't want
to look like I'm goofing off, either. Boy, I'm neurotic as all hell!).
My two cents. I'm so there with you, man. We'll make it through just
fine.
Cheers,
Jaime
