Default waking up with the smell of cigg smoke

YUCK, and I even had a mat against the door with hope to ward of the stench.
I just got back from my parents place and their apartment is right across
the hall from a smoker who leaves their front door open and the stink rolls
in my parents place when the door is open, or in this case 6 am from a crack
under the door. I even had to shut the window because a smoker was outside
and the smoke was floating in ( basement apt). I have no idea how non
smokers or reformed smokers live with smokers. I couldn't do it.

and all that is the good news.

Dad is going so fast. I spent the night with them on Thursday/Friday and
that is when he went from using the commode chair, we had to guide him there
and lift him back, but he knew he had to go pee, to Sunday not being able to
tell when he needs to go and being totally bedridden with diapers and johnny
shirts because he is so weak from the cancer. He was always a big man but
there is nothing left his arms and legs look like they came from a death
camp in WW2. His insulin needed to be increased today but he isn't eating
just soft food : apple sauce, jello, chicken soup. he did eat some steak
yesterday but I had it cut small and cooked it so tender a spoon cut it,
almost like baby food

For those who don't know dad is in late stages of brain cancer (he never
smoked). he will be 60 this month if he makes it until the 23 rd. ( not
likely) and even with a please do not smoke sign on the front door the idiot
next door won't shut his door to keep in his poison toxic , and the idiot
his brother!

So I am standing at picture window looking outside thinking "it looks
wonderful out there and when the respite care worker comes along I would
like to go outside with a cup of coffee and a smo...... WHAT THE HELL!!!! I
haven't thought of smoking in a very long time. I am fine now that I am home
but my nicodemon knew when I was vulnerable and the bastard tried. I will
have to be on the lookout now that I know he still creeping around when my
mind is on other things

I'm sorry to hear it, Lynn. My father's doctor referred to these waning days
as him having "...a case of the 'dwindles'..." as in, he's just sort of
dwindling away. At some point, even when the obvious thought processes
aren't working, the body seems to know that enough's enough, and behaves
accordingly. It's very hard to watch, and harder *not* to try to make a
difference. "Eat, dammit! Just another spponfull. PLEASE..?" --but it's
gotten to the stage where it really doesn't make much of a difference.

Uh-huh. Not so weird, really. Not at all, come to think of it. This was the
way *most* of us dealt with stress or took a break from a range of difficult
tasks, in many cases, FOR MOST OF OUR LIVES! I can very easily see how this
could creep into your thoughts. It's a real stretch to think of a harder
thing to deal with than the impending death of a parent. I had an occasion
or two, that final week where I watched my dad slipping away, to think of
taking a smoke break. I actually asked myself if a lungful of poisonous
fumes would help me in any way. The answer was always "no".

I know how hard it is, what you're going through right now, Lynn. I also
know that you'll get through it without smoking. Even if that *doesn't*
necessarily seem like the highest possible achievement during this shitty
couple of weeks, take comfort in the fact that you've learned to draw on
this strength. It'll serve you well in other areas. Take pride in the fact
that you're a good daughter, doing what's right, under trying and difficult
circumstances, for her helpless dad. Please believe that on some level, he
knows and appreciates what you're doing for him.

((((Lynn))) I am so sorry you are going through this. We have lost
several friends this month and it is an awful thing. Please take care of
yourself.

Wow Lynn, I am so sorry to hear about the progress of your father. It is truly
heartbreaking. But you are so strong, and will be there for him to comfort him as the
days progress. Unbelievable about the nicodemon, isn't it?

((((Lynn)))) What a very hard place for you and your family to be in!
Despite the fact that I have lived a very long time, I have never had
to face what you are going through. Although there were deaths in my
family, they were either when I was very young, or they took place far
away.

Still, I find myself searching for a way to comfort you. It's good to
hear you battling with your demon even as you try to maintain your
equilibrium. In so many ways, AS3 is a place where each and every one
of us can come with our troubles and woes and know we will find a kind
heart, a gently pat on the shoulder, a listening ear. We are a family
of a sort.

Take care of yourself, my dear. We love and need you.

My thoughts are with you and your family ... I lost my dad to cancer
(lung cancer and he did smoke) only 6 months ago.

Sorry to hear that things are going to badly for your dad. Somehow I
had missed any previous posts regarding his age. I'd no idea he is so
young.
Bless you and bless your family. You are strong and can get through
this.

Lynn! I am sorry to read about this situation. It is hard but you
know that it's going to be over soon. I am confident you are doing
all you can to make this situation as easy for all as much as you
can. It's hard but a part of life. I do know you will come out of
this smober, just know the demon always works overtime when we're
stressed.

Thank you all, I had to do an unexpected run in last night. The head of
palliative care came in and told her the nitty gritty about what to do when
" don't call 911 call the ER or palliative so they can send someone to
pronounce him, and maybe tonight would be a good night to call in the
family" and stuff like that which like you can imagine had mom into a deep
spin that plus he took another step downward. the steps down are getting
closer together.

So I went in and sat with them, convinced mom to take a couple of Advil and
even got her to have a cup of coffee after I had to translate ( ok put a
lying positive spin) on what the nurse was saying. The nurse got the
morphine and dexamethasone ( for taking down the swelling in the brain) in
needle form when the time comes. I just kind of said "maybe after they
increased the dexa he will be brighter tomorrow and he is just having a bad
day esp after what you heard today"
knowing I was lying through my teeth because he is at the max dose right now
but she gave a sigh of relief.

Dad's sister Judy was spending the night last night and his other sister
Karen is coming today for the night. I think
she would prefer me but they need time too.

Lynn,
I can't add any wisdom to what has been said. I am with you in spirit.
I have been through it. I wish that it wasn't happening to you.
Just know that you have the loving thoughts of all of your family here
as you go through this.

Annette
