| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Thanks, Kathleen! I find taking my camera out with me usually will
yield a photo or three worth keeping. A lot of the landmark buildings
here are light at night but usually stop that after midnight except
for minimal lighting. As we walked east on 23rd Street to 5th we saw
the moon there and I knew I had the photo op I 'd been expecting all
night long.

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Kathleen! Thanks for asking. The Flatiron Building was built in
1902. Due to it's triangular shape the wind on 23rd Street would whip
up the Ladies' shirts and men could catch a glimpse of ankle, which
was totally risque at the time. The phrase '23 Skadoo' evolved from
police officers telling men to move on and stop leering. Certainly
that's quaint by today's standards where Lady Godiva could ride down
5th Avenue unnoticed. <G> Here's a link to some photos I have of the
building to show you what I'm writing about. http://picasaweb.google.com/Flatiron...18234234364786
As to what's in it, the building is mainly the offices of St. Martin's
Press but there are some other firms in the building as well. I just
read in Leona Helmsley's obit the other day that she & her hubby
either own the building or did recently. I do hope that is no longer
true as I would hate to think the "Queen of Mean" had anything to do
with this wonderful landmark around the corner from where I live.

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Damn, Mike. I am really, REALLY, homesick now. I have not been to the city
since 9/11, because I know I will weep like a baby. I have (had) three very
close friends die in that, that...I don't know what to call it, act that
destroyed the Twin Towers. All of the worked there. I cannot picture the
city without them. But I know I have to go home and see it. Thank you so
much for sharing these beautiful pictures with us. I, for one, is most
appreciative.

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Thanks for your response, Az. Yes, the City has not been the same
since 9/11. While I never liked the buildings architecturally, having
them destroyed in that manner really turned the city inside out
emotionally and we are still regaining our sanity over that nearly 6
years later. The site now is just another building site but there are
still signs of that day downtown and St.Paul's Chapel is a shrine to
that day. I was not working by the time the buildings were attacked
but I went out on the roof of the building where I was living in
Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and could actually see the smoke from it. The
smell from that day was sickening and I can still remember it after
all this time. Still, NYC being NYC, we have not stopped and we do go
on the best ways we know how.

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Thank you Rosie! If you have not been here in 36 years then you would
be totally amazed at how much it has changed. We are in the midst of
a serious building boom here and it seems like every other block has a
construction site going for yet another 20-30 story building.

severe culture shock I'm sure. I live surrounded by hundreds of miles of . .

I think all the gargoyles on the NYC buildings are something else, they're
amazing and I have always thought the chrysler building would have to be the
best building there. The buildings in my town are what is known in Oz as
'federation' or turn of the century, (last one that is) they are all protected
by the historical society and have to practically get a court order to even
paint. In federation colours of course!

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Thanks, BamBam. Yes, NYC is totally different from most every place
out there. Still we have many buildings that are historic just as you
write about your federation buildings. I truely think having building
of that sort are very important as so much of what is built today is
so generic it could be anywhere. I think the Crysler building is near
the top of most lists of 'favourite NYC buildings' but there are so
many others that are overlooked because they are smaller or less known
that have as much character and style.
And I see from your meter that you just hit HOF yourself! I hope you
posted this elsewhere but in case you didn't, sit back and enjoy as
the Yodeling Gnomes are heading your way to sing songs of smobriety to
help you celebrate this milestone!

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Thanks for asking, Ashley. Yeah, Ric & I are back together. We've
come to realize better what our needs are as our relationship is
rather unconventional on many points and we have come to learn we need
enough space at times to keep our sanity as we really are so close.

| | | Re: Walking - After Midnight Oh, good, Mike. I'm so glad you guys were able to work things out. I
went to Paris with two of my dearest buds, Mark and David, in
February. They've been together for 10 years and I just can't imagine
one without the other. They're like peanut butter and jelly!
That said, I am a HUGE proponent of self-time, even in relationships.
You gotta. It's the only way I can keep my sanity.
But I'm glad you're back together. Hugs!
