Default Why are some people getting only 4-5 answers to a major milestone posting?

once upon a time getting a FMD or whatever people would come out of the
woodwork to cheer the person on or even send virtual gifts, even a WTG was
something!

Well, Lynn, I do send out the Gnomes and Horace as much as I can, but
I do miss a posting now and then, especially if it's a 'heavy flow'
day with postings...<wink>

Heh -- I think it was when you ventured Northward and were
incommunicado for that week.

You're missed when you're not here!

And thanks again for sending out the Gnomes and Horace as much as you
do! Be sure to give them a hug for me. :-)

Cheers!

The whole group is very quiet this year! I looked at google
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.s...-smoking/about
and this group hasn't been this quiet since 1997! It may be a good thing
(less smokers to quit) but I feel the ones who are here should step up and
make at least make a noise when a milestone comes along. I didn't get alot
of cheerleading on the homefront when I first quit and people making a
little fuss made it easier to go another day.

I think there are lots of old quitters here, and their "quits" are
important cause they don't think about smoking anymore, and that's a
good thing, I still support all the new quitters, but I don't get here
as often because I don't think about smoking as much as I used to. I
agree we have to support the new guys, but I think it's a good thing
that we can "forget" about our smoking history and are going on with
our lives in a different way. Those of us who still appear on AS3 need
to remember how hard it is to quit and encourage the new guys. I'm w/
Sue - I'll try to do better.
Hugs,
Pam

Can only speak for myself. I'm not very creative at times. How many
ways can one say WTG without it sounding trite and worn out? Truly
(I've learned how to spell it I think), the first few days...the first
week...the first Month (to my mind) are far more impressive than the
first year, two years, etc. It takes so much more to stay smoke-free
in the early days.

I'll try to do better. Thanks Lynn.

I stopped announcing milestones, simply because there was pretty much
a collective shrug. (Well, we are HERE for that-It's what we do..or
don't do!)
So it appeared to me that people discovered my deeply held dark
secret.
Yes. It's (Sobbing) true.

However, I do not smoke.
On March 20/21, the Spring Equinox, I will hit ONE YEAR.

LOL @I'm an asshole!!!

Referencing "

I stopped announcing milestones, simply because there was pretty much

See "SOCIAL ROLES IN ELECTRONIC COMMUNITIES"
by Scott A. Golder and Judith Donath
http://web.media.mit.edu/~golder/pro...golder2004.pdf

"alt.support.stop-smoking routinely has conversations that are
off-topic (i.e. the topic of quitting smoking) by design. For this
group, topicality is less
important than posting material that is interesting to the participants.
Arguably, however, this
requires a more sophisticated understanding of the group’s tastes. If
alt.support.stop-smoking
were simply about stopping smoking, then it would be relatively easy for
participants to decide
what is and is not acceptable." [p11]

Uh-oh, Lynn. Don't give Horace too much of a pat on the head or he'll
be unpigable to live with. Having Gnomes underfoot all day *CAN* be
trying. I just don't know how Summer manages it with Anya and those
nekked fairies of hers. <G>

you know just even having someone post a simple WTG no matter how many
times they give it out to others means something to the person who has a
milestone. it says " I don't really have time to write a huge post but I
wanted you to know I acknowledge your milestone.

It's a great thing Pam, and the results we are all after, to be free,
I know we have alot of newbies here and getting a congrats or a WTG from
someone closer to their own quits is huge, well it was for me because I knew
they were in the ditches with me and their accomplishments were my own. they
didn't seem like they were way past the fight like the OF'ers or beyond
were. But it was very nice to have them there as well cheering me on.

Hugs,
Pam

That's so true, Lynn! I remember waaaaaaaay back when I found this group
and jumped on the wagon. Getting feedback from others already quit was very
important to me and kept me going. I'll make more of an effort to give
back what AS3 has given me.

No, it's not meant to be, really..just a little Rodney Dangerfield.

Yes, I have enjoyed the Dancing Faeries and Yodelling Gnomes early on,
but we really are quitting for ourselves, not the applause..though of
course the well-wishes are another reward, and a gesture of the
support of our virtual community. But as a person who has not even
done a year, what can I actually expect to hear from an 8-Year Quit
holder?
About the same thing Tiger Woods would hear from a beginning duffer, I
would guess.
But where it really counts was last August when I had Bad Things and a
momentary slip...THEN when it really counted I got fabulous support.

So it made me put things in perspective. OK, I quit, I belong here,
and someday the quit will be permanent, but I learned my lesson and
will the last to believe it till I see it.

So, when I had been quit yet another month, the most important thing
was not to look for an automatic pat on the head, because that was
what I was SUPPOSED to be doing, anyway.
I think in the first critical three months is when people need the
extra applause, because everyone recognizes how hard that time was/is.
But for me, when another month rolls around, I'll shut up unless I get
into quit trouble, and save the applause for the 3-Mothers who really
need it. As someone else posted,(Paraphrased) "How many times can
"Way To Go" mean something special?
I know the dancing faeries and the gnomes are quivering in expectation
of my One-Year Mark on the Equinox.

(In retrospect, I should have done it on the Solstice. I could have
gone back to Chanctonbury Ring and made the Faeries appear, myself.)

Hi Sally, remember when we first met it was different in it seems
someone was always available on chat. For me those late night one on
ones helped develope some friends and quit buddies.
Marv's created a nice chat site but is seems like the old IRC site
captured far mor early quiters that were up all night.

Hi Mike! I hardly ever went into the chat room myself but I know there are
many quitters who depended on it. I guess I used AS3 as my chat room in
the early days and just never left. Good to see you again!

Hi Lynn

I'm amazed! This is *quiet*?! In all honesty I'm nowhere near able to
keep up with this group - it seems very active to me! I can never read
all the posts, which is a bit of a shame.
