pain in left knee

i have been getting popping sounds in the back of my left knee and then pain afterwards. i went 2 c my gp who then sent me 4 an xray which will take 2 weeks 2 come back. my gp says its 2 do with the ligaments. its very sore 2 walk on and 2 bend my knee when the popping happens. can any1 advise me on wot treatment i will receive and will surgery help. thanks
