High Street chemists are using the swine flu pandemic to boost sales of vitamin pills and food supplements - despite little evidence they prevent infection.

The 'swine flu windfall' has seen many pharmacies selling out of digital thermometers, antiseptic hand gel and dietary supplements.

Yesterday posters headed 'Swine Flu Update', which advertise Bio-Glucan, a supplement derived from yeast, were on display in chemists across the country.

They warn: '100,000 new cases predicted per day by the end of August according to the Government. Bio-Glucan helps to maintain a healthy immune system, the body's natural defences against infection.'

The pill contains beta-glucan, a chemical found in yeast and oats. It costs £20 for 50 pills.
