Default 1" diameter olympic length barbell?

Hi,

I have a "standard" bench, and barbell with ~1" diameter bar, and a bunch of
barbell weights with 1" holes.

The "standard" bench is not quite wide enough, when I do bench presses, I
always have to reposition my hands after I pick up the bar.

I'd like to get an olympic type bench, but I don't want to also have to buy
new weights.

So, are there barbells that are olympic width, that fit "standard" type
weights?

In the long run, you may find it cheaper to buy a cheap 300-pound
Olympic set. They're often sold at the big sporting goods franchises
for $100 when the Christmas sales start right after Thanksgiving.
Save the standard plates for a curling/tricep bar and dumbbell
handles.

Dunham's recently advertised their 300-pound Olympic sets for $79.

Once again, your research is found lacking. Your "facts" incomplete.

Precedent, of course.

Actually Curt, JMW said that 300 lb Oly sets are "*often* sold at the
big sporting goods franchises for $100." It's hard to argue with that
statement, that's basically the going price (give or take a few
bucks).

Redundant.

As opposed to cheaper to buy a more expensive, yes? Which can be true,
of course.

I recognized the caveat.

Hence my NOT choosing to argue with that statement.

I made my own statement which noted that his research was *lacking* and
*inCOMPLETE*. I did not say it was incorrect.

I might argue with that statement, however. Could you define "a few
bucks"?

David, please do not get between KING THE WONDER PIT BULL and the gift
that's on its way via USPS. Yes, courtesy of the recently-posted link
by MFW's very own Om, I discovered the perfect pooch pacifier.

Okay, KING might still bite me, but, hey, from one veteran to what I'm
assuming is your very own SEMPER FIDO, I did my best to bite-proof
myself.

Happy Veterans Day to you and your dog.

goodgawd--that's perilously close to the cost of the steel itself!
Actually, *less* than what you pay (per lb) for I-beams, heavy bar, etc,
from NYC-vicinity steel suppliers--recently 50c/lb.

I was recently at Sears, and they had a bit of a variety of 1" bars, some
quite long! Mebbe not full olympic length, but looked close.

If you can't find such a length, the steel used in these bars is pretty, uh,
run of the mill, and any decent welder could lengthen the bar for you, proly
fer cheap.
He could add on lengths to each end, or cut it in the middle and splice in a
section.
You'd wanna paint it, if spliced in the middle. They make nice chrome spray
paints.

You can actually make your own bars, real nice, from 1" solid bar ( or
heavy-walled tubing) and 1.125 18 ga stainless tube to go on the outside, w/
some locking collars from MSC/Graingers, and 1" spring clamps available at
any modell's. I don't have all the part numbers handy, cuz I machine all
these things from scratch (yuppie appeal, donchaknow), but I know they are
available.
The 1.125 stainless tube over the 1" bar provides some rotational "give", as
in the olympic bar--not quite as nice as the olympic, cuz they use ball
bearings'n'shit, but still serviceable.
You won't have the knurling on the bar, tho. If important, various tapes
might do, or some friction-type paints.

The bar may be steel, but the rest is just cast iron. There's a big
difference.

True.
But still.... awfully cheap.
And proly a lot of the price is freight.

How bout DIS:
Sams club sells a stainless steel mechanics chest, gor-jee-us, over 500 lbs,
for about $550. $1/ lb. wow.....
Not Snap-On quality, of course....

Sams club also had a humongous weight/squat rack ditty this past spring, w/
I think something of a Smith doodad, w/ boucou weights, came in *8 hyooge
boxes*, really looked impressive--$450, or thereabouts.
Was very tempted to get it, but just the *thought* of loading/unloading the
pickup (and one w/ a full size bed, not one of these bullshit
RidgeLines'n'shit) just made me weak. I'm sure the total weight of this
thing (much of it steel, btw) was about 1,000 lbs.
