| | | 46 years old, protein shakes. What's up everyone? As the subject line states, I am 46. I have been
working out religiously for the past nine months with free weights. I
have worked out very hard during this time, although my gains have
been modest.
Nonethess, I am happy with my results. The only supplement I take is
protein shakes. (whey protein).
When I flip through the muscle magazines I am inundated with
supplements adverstisments that
say they promote muscle growth. Will somebody please point me in the
right direction as to what
other essential muscle growth supplement I should be taking besides
whey protein shake? I would
greatly appreciate it.
I see a lot of ads for nitro. Is this something I should be taking? |

Ignore the glitzy ads. They're trying to sell you crap. You might
add some creatine monohydrate to your whey protein. And the whey
protein is only really valuable to you during the time surrounding
your resistance training. During the rest of the day, other protein
sources work just as well.
FWIW, I'm 50. I've trained off and on since I was 18, but I've done
it consistently for over a decade. |

So, when you work out religiously, does that mean you say a prayer before
every lift?

Much as it pains me to agree with JMW, timing matters. Even scrawny me,
at age 52, tries to take a protein supplement - mine is usually a bar
not a shake, but same basic idea - shortly after my workout. I like
bars because I often have to take a quick shower and head out the door
after my workout and I can have the bar in the car more quickly and
easily than making and taking a shake with me. The bars cost more, a
definite downside, but if I don't have to head out, I'll often opt for
half a small sandwich instead, which has more or less the same
nutritional content in terms of protein and carbs.
Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Ok, thanks for the input everyone. It doesn't sound like there are
any essentials supplements I need to be aware of. |

I saw those protein bars in the grocery store recently. They where
all going for $1-2 each. I thought that was pretty expensive compared
to my 6 pounds of whey which seems to last forever. I don't think it
is all that hard to mix up the powder and drink it. I just worry
about it being confused with another white powdery substance. I grew
up an anti-drug age where it was school policy to call the police on
kids taking any pills, even aspirin. I can thank the hippi generation
for that. Now their kids are worse with drugs than my generation ever
was. |

Do you mean the kids of the hippy generation use drugs or dont use drugs?
Around here, the kids that were born in the sixties/seventies are more or
less anti-drug.
You know, you do the opposite of what your parents did. If i had a son he
would probably become an islamic marathon runner, obsessed with skinny assed

Pete, you're a funny guy. I didn't know who Twiggy is so I had to put
the word into google. Yes, this is it. She's got a DZ slash kettlebell

Yeah that is what I meant but I guess it is hard to define the
generation of kids. I was born in the late 60's but my parents
consider themselves be of a 50's mindset. Probably because I was
second born. I just know when I was a teen drugs where expensive and
most people only tried the lighter stuff. Nowadays kids are taking
ecstacy and other harmful drugs. And all the stuff is pretty cheap.
I think that compared to the LSD of the hippi generation. We had
crack but that didn't kick in until long after I graduated and I doubt
it was used except by extreme drug users. I think this stuff is much
worse than things like smoking pot. |

"WHY!?" he yelled at Neil's killfile.
It's amusing to think of the posts that might be taking place without
people being aware due to the KF action. I've never killfiled anyone
because it's a simple task to ignore those I want to ignore.
Individual choice, of course.
Also amusing (to me anyway) is that I offered up a "Suck it up." to
the one recent poster in a DOMS thread and then ol' Neil, unbeknownst
to him (unless he's been checking my posts courtesy of Google),
offered the exact same advice. Now, in this thread I mentioned fluffy
muscles AFTER Neil and Steve.
Easy (and interesting) to see who's following the threads and the
things that stick in their minds.

Define "essential" here. Nothing is essential, or at least not essential
in supplement form. A few things are helpful, and most things are a total
waste of $$$.

There's the "Some MFW patrons shall employ killfiles so they generally don't
have to read what the group fuckwits[*] insist on sharing."
