Default Advice needed on aerobic exercises

I work out a few times a week on my Bowflex but I also do aerobic
exercises 4 times a day for about 15 minutes each . Is it better to
exercise less for longer periods - let's say 2 periods of 20 minutes
rather than what I'm doing . Thanks . Bernie

For purposes of your health, it doesn't make a significant difference -
either way you're doing more than you need already. If I were you, I
would vary the pace and intensity of your aerobic exercise instead of
making it all long, slow distance type work.

4 times a _day_? Really?

Depends on what your goals are. Why would you want to do cardio four
times a day for only fifteen minutes? I've read that your body
doesn't start tapping fat stores until at least 20 minutes of aerobic
activity, so if weight loss is your main ambition you might want to
prolong your cardio sessions. Also, the greater the intensity the
more fat that gets burned.

Ignore the dickless wonder. Anyone stupid enough to do "cardio" for only 15
minutes (less than 20 is NOT cardio) at a time is A) a troll, or B) a
moron.

Maybe he's just starting out. I used to do chin-ups every time I went
in and out of the kitchen. Maybe he's on something like that.

As a kid I used to try to run everywhere. That was the equivalent of
doing cardio for 15 minutes at a time (or 5-10, in my case then, more
likely) throughout the day.

I don't care if he's just starting out. Before starting out you should know
the one basic rule of cardio that the MINIMUM to be cardio, is 20 minutes.
Anything less is not cardio, and does no benefit cardio wise.

Well, if you want to get really technical...you forgot to add that one
should be doing within, what was it, 70% or so of their heart rate or
something or other...otherwise, no "training effect" and not much fat
loss....

Correct. But I'm educating the idiot, i'm critisizing him. I'm sure he's
not interested in education.

You need to read the research on the Tabata protocol. Pubmed is your
friend.

Bernie,

I like the 2 periods of workouts (maybe morning and evening?), that'll
probably put some quality into what you're doing. There's nothing
wrong with starting out at 20 minutes. That may be more beneficial for
you rather than jumping on something you can't chew right from the
start.

Having said that, since you mentioned "aerobic fitness", research has
proved that you form best running economy by running slow. With slower
speeds, you also tire out less faster and you can continually
challenge yourself to longer times, provided you maintain hydration
every 15-20 mins (very important).

You must've read this about 20 years ago. It is very incorrect, and I
haven't seen this statement in a magazine or news article in quite a
long time.

In reality, your body is *always* burning fat as one of its sources of
energy. There is no on-off switch in the body for "fat burning".

> Also, the greater the intensity the more fat that gets burned.

In a given span of time, yes. You got that part right.

Primary sources for body fuel is carbs, then fats, then stored
glycogen, and then stored bodyfat.
Hence the old idea of continued long cardio to get to the stored fat
source.
Newer thinking is that high intensity interval cardio, altho not as
many calories are used at the time, gives a longer thermic effect
and also is better for raising/lower recovery of your heart rate for
cadiovascular fitness.
So as someone said, it depends on his goals.

You can do the Tabata protocol for 15 minutes? I'm seriously
impressed (or skeptical, whichever comes first).

I can do something Tabata-esque for 15 minutes, but it's not really
the same thing.

My point was that you can do "cardio" for less than 20 minutes and
still have it be effective. In fact, chances are good it will be more
effective than 30 minutes of what most people consider cardio.

This, of course, depends on your defition of "effective cardio," but I
am sure you get the idea.
