| | | Anybody else use a HRM while lifting? I wear a heartrate monitor most weight workouts. I try not to drop below
120 bpm and average 130 to 140 bpm, spiking to over 160 for some exercises.
140 is about 75-80% of my max hr. It's probably not the best way to get any
size but I get a lot done in a short amt of time and it helps burn calories
if you're looking to lose some fat. |

I contemplated using one but decided against it. I don't spend a lot of
time socializing during my 40 minute workout and generally perspire and
have a noticeable increase in my breathing rate. I figure if I am
sweating and puffing toward the end of the session I am working hard
enough, no matter what my heart rate.

At one time I used to monitor my heart rate during my workout on a
stationary bike which had a HRT buit in. I did it out of curiosity and
to prove the point too. There was a guy there who wanted to slim down,
so he spent his precious time sitting on a bike and pretending to do
something. I trained with weights, like a real man. ;-)
Anyway, my heart rate was pretty much the same as yours (never below
130, spiking at 160 just after a set) which was above of what he had.
He's seen the light and started lifting iron. Mission accomplished!

I only ever check BPM during cardio.
I HAVE checked my heart rate after doing deadlifts.
It gets up there. <g>

I don't think the calories you burn aren't going to increase just by
starting the next set sooner.

Well, sure, if you're doing more of the same exercises, then you're
burning more calories. But you don't need a HRM for that. I think, for
most amateur athletes, HRM's are overused and overrated. There's a lot
good that happens when you learn to listen to your own body about
recovery times and the like.

I do that, too, but I'm also a geek who likes to measure/quantify

Not saying this is or isn't you, but one of my favorite "Party" sayings
is, "Understanding is just a delaying tactic."  For some things, it's
good, as long as you realize there are times when it gets in the way,
too.

If you're looking to lose some fat, eat less. Trying to turn your
weight lifting into an cardio workout sounds counter-productive to me. |

No, it's not. If you are short on time and spend what you have
available sitting and chatting with friends, your workout is
counter-productive. What Zen does doesn't seem like one to me at all.
