Lose fat. You cannot spot reduce/spot define any area by doing exercises
for that area. You can build muscle, you can lose fat, but you cannot
turn fat into muscle or burn away fat from a specific area. If you want
to lose fat from only one area, then that's why they have liposuction!

As opposed to lifting a bar of the floor, which experience is very close to
that of a roller-coaster ride?

You heard wrong. The abdoninals pull the ribs towards the pelvic. (or
reverse)

And crunches do that.

Perhaps you might want to try "sit-crunch." Its action is somewhere between
a crunch and a sit-up, it limits the action of the hip flexors, but still
gives them some stimulation.

Best example is a sit uo with the lower legs on a 1 1/2 feet high bench,
lower legs parallel to the floor, upper legs perpendicular. Pull the torso
all the way to the upper legs.
And round the spine as much as possible while you are on your way up.

This is one of the best exercises to stress the abs, due to the fact they
are not completey isolated, but the degree of isolation is still high enough
to target them. Or use a machine.

Did you come here because you wanted to hear that sqauts & deadlifts are
better?

And less boring?

The MFW "SQUATS AND DEADLIFTS RULE GIMME A HELL YEAH !!!" are over. Thank
God...

Eat less. Use thermogenics. Move more.

Any exercise that treats the abs more or less like any other muscle,
e.g., with resistance that's heavy enough to matter, and a set and rep
range consistent with your goals. While I also find crunches boring and
ineffective, with some added weight they aren't a bad exercise as long
as you pay strict attention to proper form (read: use your abs and not
your hip flexors).
