Any exercise that treats the abs more or less like any other muscle,
e.g., with resistance that's heavy enough to matter, and a set and rep
range consistent with your goals. While I also find crunches boring and
ineffective, with some added weight they aren't a bad exercise as long
as you pay strict attention to proper form (read: use your abs and not
your hip flexors).
