Do they mean that literally??? How is it possible to increase strength
even as muscles fibers shrink or disappear????

"Muscle strength...can be increased at any age, even in one's 90s, to
protect against falls, maintain mobility, prevent new injuries and
empower individuals. Especially important is strengthening the muscles
in the front and sides of the thighs, which help support the knees, and
strengthening core muscles of the trunk (back, buttocks and abdomen) to
protect the spine and support the entire body."

It is, in fact, old news.
'Tis better, tho, not to wait until 90.
In answer to your Q, iffin you do real exercise, visavis this bullshit they
do in rehab/pt/informercials, muscle fibers won't shrink/disappear.
iow, they shrink/disappear precisely because you are *not* trying to
increase, or even maintain, strength.

Which is why, imo, these motorized scooters for seniors are the P/T
equivalent if giving heroin to school kids. *Devastating* from a
health/fitness/longevity/QOL pov.

There are many components to strength. I'm a popular example around
here of someone getting stronger without gaining weight. As long as
we're alive, our bodies try to adapt to the training to which we subject
them.
