| | | Bulking diet in five words or less? The last year has been a setback for me, for multiple reasons
including health, work and injuries. I'm now back to about 180 @ 20%
bodyfat, down from 210 @ 10% bodyfat a couple years ago.
I've had the most success in this situation with simple formulas -
quit fast food, stop using fatty condiments and sauces, increase the
protein a ton. I'm starting this up again, but wonder if any of you
might have other simple formulae that a dilletante like me (or newbies
to the group) could take advantage of.
The powerlifter answer to my subject might be "Eat Everything You
See", but I'm looking for aesthetics right now, not raw strength.
Thanks for any ideas. Even humorous snark.

My apologies to Shute for my terse post above. Here it is again for you my
little pooper:
What are dense carbs? How do you define "quality" when it relates to dense
carbs?
On a further note, how will fibre help in a bulking diet?

I think she meant food high in carbs that dont occupy too much space in the
stomach.
Like pasta. Its what i call a "caloric dense food."
Because it doesnt have much fiber.
> How do you define "quality" when it relates to dense carbs?
Wish i knew.
In the end, a carb = carb = carb.
> On a further note, how will fibre help in a bulking diet?
I doesnt.
I recommend fiber when people want to lose weight. You, lots of space
occupied in the stomach without much carbs. High quality carbs ;-O
But when it comes to food and diet, i actually should shut up gracefully,
and dont give recommendations
And i wont.

Dense and high fiber are contradictive. Its either high fiber or calric
dense. Never both.
Even i know that, and i dont know anything about nutrition.
Aside from the fact that fast food gives best results when its consumede
fast.
And thats a FACT!

I usually recommend a similair increase in carbs and protein when it comes
to gaing weight. Most people allready consume enough fats anyway.
And again, i actually shouldnt make nutritional reccomendations.
So i wont.

I'd not go quite that far...
Efficient and proper digestion of carb foods can be aided by the correct
amount of fiber.
An efficient digestive system is what you want to achieve.
Believe it or not, proper water intake is also very helpful.

I try based on what I know but will never claim to be an expert. :-)
But I don't mind being contradicted. If someone has a differing concept
that they can back up with appropriate references, I chalk it up to
personal education.
Most people just post links. A clogged up intestine will prevent you
from absorbing the proper nutrients. Fiber helps to keep it clean so
fiber is just as important for gaining weight as losing it.
Not a bad idea for URL's.
Let's see what we can find: http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:...cla.edu/pages/
Resources/Handouts/HOWtGain.pdf+how+to+gain+weight&hl=en&gl=us&ct=cln k&cd
=2
Or: http://tinyurl.com/y45mwk
Note that pretty much most of those foods are high carb...
and high fiber.
Clean intestines absorb nutrients better.

I take 3 MetaMucil each day. Dissolved in water.

I guess thats true.
But i still wouldnt advice to eat foods high in fiber to increase weight.
Assuming that person allready consumes enough fiber and/or doesnt have
digestive problems.
Eskimos never eat fiber, do they? There is NO fiber around there ;-O
It seems we are the only species on the planet that eat both meat, from
different animal sources, and fish. And diary products. And eggs. And
potatoes. And rice. And pasta. And fruits. Different kinds. And vegetables.
Different kinds.
You know... that NEVER made any sense to me.
Why would i eat ANYTHING that doesnt grow, or live here ?!?!?!
Ever thought about that? Its not logical.
Seafood is healthy, but the majority of people doesnt live near the shores.
My girlfriend eats weird tropical fish, imported from South America. Do you
know the amount of EFA they contain? Almost zero. It seems the colder the
water/seas, the more omega-3 and 6 there is present.
(FWIW, i eat 3 haring "herring" sandwiches RAW a few hours ago. Delicious!)
A lot of African people never eat fish from the sea, and they cant handle
milk. But they dont seem to have much health issues. Not counting the ones
who or starving to death ;-(
Most animals go their entire LIFE on a diet that only have a few different
kinda nutrients, over and over and over again. Yet they are in pretty good
health, pretty good shape and DAMN strong!
Food for thought. I think...

Your own summary is more than five words:
> quit fast food, stop using fatty condiments and sauces, increase the
> protein a ton.
but it sounds good to me. Or how about:
"Eat more good food."
That's four words. I could make it five words by adding "Lift." But that
would be about something more than diet, I guess. And I guess you could
probably drop the "good" adjective from the "food" if you "lift" enough.
But what do I know?

Just a few examples ..foods CAN have a higher caloric value and be
considered high fiber at the same time ..
keeping in mind one cup isnt much, and recommended fiber intake per day
is 25-30 grams:
1 cup sweet potatoes = 180 calories/4 grams protein/41 grams carbs
(7grams fiber)
1 cup yams = 158 calories /2 grams protein/38 grams carbs (5.3 grams
fiber)
1 cup lima beans = 216 calories/15 grams protein/40 grams carbs (13
grams fiber)
1 cup lentils = 230 calories/18 grams protein/40 grams carbs (16 grams
fiber)
2 cups raison bran = 342 calories/9 grams protein/83 grams carbs (10
grams fiber)
1 serving (2oz) Wild Oats whole wheat pasta = 213 calories/7 grams
protein/44 grams carbs (6 grams fiber)
So say breakfast for someone who wanted to gain weight:
1 cup oatmeal = 147 calories/6 grams protein/25 grams carbs (4grams
fiber)
2 pieces of whole wheat toast (Trader Joes/5 wheat grain) 220
calories/8 grams protein/46 grams carbs (6 grams fiber)
1 cup egg beaters or similar = 211 calories/30 grams protien/3.2 grams
carbs (0 fiber)
One navel orange = 75 calories/1.4 grams protein/19 grams carbs (3.4
grams fiber)
Total breakfast intake = 653 calories/45 grams protein/93 grams carbs
(13 grams fiber)
And btw 'dense' carbs are carbs that do not break down into blood
sugars very fast .. you know like eating oatmeal compared to candy
floss .. and 'quality' carbs are what we know we should be eating but
dont ;-) like vegetables, fruits and whole grains over cakes, donuts,
candies, and icecream. If you cant understand the difference then you
should take Nutrition 101.

YOU invent your own terminology and then suggest it's someone else's fault
for not understanding WTF you are talking about.
Try looking up simple/complex carbs and take it from there eh?

In the past, it's been a lot easier for me to take off fat during the
course of a lifting regimen than it's been to put on muscle.
My first run at "body retrieval" had me losing fat and gaining lean
mass for the first couple months.
At this weight and BF, I'm mostly concerned that I've lost so much
lean mass, it's a priority to get it back. I know the advantages of
more lean mass affecting metabolism are overrated, but for some reason
with my genes it seems to be the case. The fat will take care of
itself once I'm back at the gym 3 or 4 times a week and paying
attention to what I eat (ie, no more late-night runs to KFC).

And with aesthetics in mind, get thee to that 1500-calorie diet and
lose some fat, my friend.
Or:
(1) Lose (2) some (3) fat. (4) Lift (5) intensely.
I've upped my daily calorie count (courtesy of a blender drink of
Nutrex's Vitargo CGL, apple sauce, and orange juice) some since
dropping about 20 pounds of weight (a lot of fat, but I'm sure some
muscle, too). I'm hella happier with my waistline and the veins that've

But Pete we eat lot of crap too. If we cut out all the process and
artificial foods we might not need as much fiber to push it through.
Foods like chips and soda are known to increase constipation. We
also have much bigger bodies and are therefore consuming more food. I
saw a show where Bushman would lay out leaves to capture water. We
probably drink more water in a day then they do in a week. Watch the
movie "The Gods Must be Crazy" it is pretty funny. Eskimo's eat lots
of meat because it helps keep their bodies warm in the freezing cold.
We are not like either of them.
I think you should drop the Metamucil crap and eat some real fiber.
But then I think you should drop the steroids too. I mean how fucking
big do you want to get anyway. |

I never eat or drink that.
When i eat crap, at least its crap that contains lots of protein, like
Hamburgers or Pizza.
I never eat candy. Or chips. I drink milk, fruit-juice and a few "energy
drinks." When i snack, i eat sliced sausages and cheese. Things like that.
My diet isnt really that bad. I should eat some more fiber, but i can only
eat so much.

True.
But they are still human just like us. Same DNA.
> I think you should drop the Metamucil crap and eat some real fiber.
Well, i eat some. Not that much, but still. The MetaMucil seems to help me
get enough fiber.
> But then I think you should drop the steroids too.
My last cycle was in 2004. Thats almost 3 years now.
I only took Primo/Proviron afterwards to help me retain the gains. Which
worked fine in the beginning.
I only lost weight slowly ever since. Right now, i bounced back from 250 to
260. That usually happens in the winter, since i consume more foods instead
of almost going liquid when its to warm and humid in the summer.
> I mean how fucking big do you want to get anyway.
320 ripped would be nice. But i am realistic, and thats not gonna happen.
320 bloated is more realistic, after which i will lose weight until i am
280. Still with BF in the low double digits.
And after that, i just have to see how everything goes. For me, its
impossible to eat 6-8 real meals a day, even if they are small ones. So i
resort to semi-liquid foods and MetaMucil. And some fast food. With 2 large
meals. Usually 6-8 slices of bread with 6 eggs or something else with a lot
of protein. Dinner is usually either rice, patatoes or pasta with some
chicken or beef. And some vegatables.
Its almost impossible to maintain a 270-280 body with a diet that is
dominant in fiber, like lots of fruits and vegetables.
I am convinced my diet/lifestyle is stll a lot better than that of the
avarage Joe.

Still, the foods that are the most caloric dense, or the ones that contains
the most carbs per 100 gram, dont have much fiber. The fibers occupy space
and weight. Not that i am saying thats a bad thing.

Dense?
You mean "complex," long chained.

Maybe i should.
One is never too old to learn.

Obviously not as big as Pete. Maybe a couple more inches to the arms
but I don't expect to get much bigger than that. My focus is just as
heavy on proportion, strength, and overall shape.
Any references out there on how big a natural bodybuilder can get?
Preferably by height and weight. If I knew how big it was possible
for me to get without steroids I would have a better idea. |

Ah I see. I thought you where still taking them even though you
where close to your size limit.

How tall are you? If your not competing than most people are not
going to notice much difference between huge and really huge.

I am sure that is a big limiting factor for myself. I won't ever have
a diet to maintain a massive build. On the other hand I still find it
odd these guys that lose 30 pounds in two years. Maybe my body
composition isn't so bad. |

Hey he wanted it in 5 words or less. I think he is too fat to be
bulking. I think the first month or two he should just lift and run
his ass off. Initial gains will be in strength and technique anyway.
And with two years off he can tap into some of that beginner luck of
losing bodyfat while gaining muscle. If he starts bulking at 20%
bodyfat from the beginning he is going to get obese. I think he
should limit his pigging out to post workout meals until he gets
bodyfat under 16%. |

But i dont lift for others ;-O
No really, i dont care if others see me as huge or really huge. I really
dont care about their opinion.
