Oh come on dude! There are actually quite a few on topic posts here, and
a few that could use your less jaded input. ;-)

That is a strange coincidence, Lester. I checked in after leaving
permanently just to see how things were proceeding...or
regressing...and there you are. Maybe the oldtimers have some sort of
genetic compulsion to return to the scene of their youth...like
salmon.
Would anyone mind if I laid my eggs now?

No. They aren't actually trolls. Just folks who didn't like the "old"
MFW, which was confrontational, interesting, educational, fun. They
wanted a "nice, friendly" group where utter bullshit advice was
perfectly acceptable, as long as the bullshitter was nice and didn't
insult anyone. So they set about to change the group, and succeeded.

So are you active on one of the web forums? Any recommendations? I've been
doing a lot of open water rowing, but just picked up an essentially new
Cybex adjustable bench at a nice price. Right now I'm looking for a decent
power cage for the gym at work, which lacks liftoff pegs in the homemade
racks. |

See? Another oldtimer! Swam upstream to get here
Lyle's forums have proven fun and useful. While there certainly isn't
the illustrious cast of renowns that the old MFW was famous for, his
original forum has the same "fuck you, you dumb shit" attitude.
Interestly (to me) was that he had to form a second forum for the
"nice, sweet, non-confrontational, supportive" folks. Which is quite
useful for the educational aspects, but not as much fun.
Too bad MFW couldn't have had two groups: the "old" one, and a new,
politically correct, sickly sweet, one. |

Here's one that actually made me think of you - the EMTs at today's
Fourth of July parade in my town were riding bikes - made by Smith &
Wesson. (I'm a judge for the musical groups at the parade.) I figure
that's the kind of bike you might ride.

Bottom line tho was MFW was one of the last bastions of decent usenet
information. One of the selling points of portal web systems is the
ability to blog. Usenet is the original blog and it really isn't
obsolete. With a good reader it is superior to web forums for
information exchange. It is (arguably) superior or at least as good as a
blog.
But the trolls did kill it. Too bad the idea of a moderator was seen as
bad. If the purpose of moderation was simply to get rid of people who
were trying to take down the system it would have been good. FIne line
to position, I realize.
Oh well. I, for one, miss the days when you could post something novel
and contentious on here and you'd get discussion. Or post something
wrong and get called out on it. Now - I'm not sure there are more than a
handful of people who really know what is being discussed on any leading
edge stuff.
A recent study showing high levels of caffeine ingestion with carbs
caused 66% ore glycogen accumulation after intensive exercise (Journal
of Applied Physiology (2008), Pedersen DJ, et al "High rates of muscle
glycogen resynthesis after exhaustive exercise when carbohydrate is
co-ingested with caffeine"). That would have been a fun discussion in
MFW circa 2000 or so. The coffee drinkers would have been ectastic, the
study methodology would have been questioned, the impact on nervous
tissue would have been questioned and a whole pile of speculation on
mechanism of resynthesis would have happened. Is glycogen increases
really important to weightlifters? How about the HIT aspects?
And does it affect LEPTIN!!!

So how is my favorite Canadian? Keith, you should really take up
diving...and then move on to technical diving. You'd love the physics
involved and no, diving doesn't affect your hearing. My advanced
nitrox and decompression instructor wears hearing aids and is more
deaf than I am.

Another aspect of technical diving is keeping oneself in good physical
condition. The higher your fitness level, the better one is able to
off gas. So you would be the perfect technical diver, IMO.
Anyhoo, I've got to get back to organizing my dive gear (it takes up 6
bins...tech diving can be expensive;-). I'm taking an attractive warm
water diving lady to Wazee on Sunday for a very cold water dive
Oh, and, my training is ok. I'm training at The Press Gym in Little
Canada as well as the Plainfield Gym and Fitness center in
Indianapolis. I'm working on the new airport they're building there
and will be most of the summer. I'm flying back on weekends and am on

My roo is not really very affectionate. She doesn't like to be kissed unless

That's not exactly what happened although much of what you say is
true. The "interesting, educational, fun" content was what made most
of us stay so long, with a great deal of enthusiasm and determination.
The degrees of "confrontation" were not equally motivated or balanced,
and you Cohen have no experience of the hostility that some people
were made to endure.
As one of a number of posters who had met in real life, you Cohen
enjoyed a rather closeted and accepted place in the MFW hierarchy, and
can have no real personal concept of the "confrontational"
unpleasantness regularly meted out to those who were not so embraced.
The *real* problem was one person who became so full of his own piss
and importance, that he thought he had the right to say who could post
here and who couldn't.
He was/is an overbearing narcissistic psychopathic obnoxious prick,
with an over-inflated unrealistic sense of his own worth and ability.
The object was to oppose him at every opportunity; to beat him at his
own game; give him a taste of his own medicine, and send him packing
just like he had done to so many other people over a period of many
years. In that objective there was, as you so rightly say, ultimate
"success"!!
Unfortunately, he alienated many of the "old regulars" who he had
attempted to recruit to support him. They did remain loyal to him, if
only in a somewhat half-hearted manner, but they eventually tired of
the constant unpleasantness generated, as his bullying tactics
descended into borderline illegality, with his very personal and
threatening behaviour to a number of other contributors.
If you are looking to apportion blame for the demise of what you
describe as the "old MFW", then you need to look no further than a
certain fat, bald, aged, mustachioed assistant county prosecutor...
....meanwhile, I will gladly raise my hand and admit to being one of
those that opposed him so remorselessly and energetically!!
(I see he couldn't resist responding to your post. Fancy a little
"sport" john boy?) ;o)
>
>Nothing lasts forever. Usenet itself is becoming obsolete.

That is something of an overstatement even for you Cohen; your
non-participation in Usenet activities is not necessarily an
indication that the whole edifice is crumbling!
How the fuck are you anyway Nursey Boy; still knocking the arse out of
eating and drinking, fighting the flab and ever on the lookout to get
your leg over? ;o)
Nice to see you posting again, even if it is only a passing fancy. Not
may people can prompt me into contributing these days.
Have a great weekend mate - you know I intend to!! ;o)
