| | | Concentration curl problems Hello, I'm a newbie to this group so please forgive me if these
questions are stupid.
I had a rib injury a few weeks ago and previously had been doing
50lbt x 14 reps concentration curls. After the injury the strain on my
rib and back were too much so I had to substitute preacher curls.
My questions are :
(1) Are there any techniques/devices that help to keep oneself
from leaning back and putting stress on the back and ribs when
approaching temporary muscular failure? I say this because I
have a major problem with back stress (and other areas --
almost feels like my abs are chipping in) and leaning back
when approaching TMF.
(2) After weeks of not performing concentration curls, I decided
to test myself, as my rib had gotten better. Curiously, I've
regressed by 4 reps, and I feel weaker. I thought this
strange since preacher curls are supposed to be one of the
most intense biceps isolation exercises. Is this normal?
Thanks for any help,
Jonathan busby

You are a noob using 23 kilos for 14 reps doing CCs?

I think so, yes.
Ever tried this way? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NibWwZFlenA
You didnt want to lean back, you said?
Thats weird, because i never witnessed anyone leaning back performing CCs

Preacher?
You said concentration, i thought

Are they the most intense? If so, why?
And why is strange you lose strength on an exercise that is allegedly
intense, as opposed to losing strength in an exercise that is not intense?

He replaced concentration curls with preacher curls. He then went
back to concentration curls to test his strength and found out he has
regressed. He thought this was curious, because he thought that
preacher curls were more intense than concentration curls, therefore
he expected to keep his ground on concentration curls.
I don't agree with his expectations, but I think the post was pretty
clear.
If for no other reason, the range of motion relative to gravity is
different between concentration curls and preacher curls. The force
of the weight is straight down (unless you've got a lot of velocity on
it). It's all trigonometry from there. The greatest torque required
to lift the weight is when your forearm is horizontal to the ground,
which occurs at roughly 90 degree elbow bend on concentration curl and
120 degrees bend on preacher curl (measuring from your shoulder to
your hand).

I was wondering the same thing. Except he said lbt instead of lbs and
I wasn't sure if he meant for one or two dumbbells.

My book has it listed under the "don't do this" section. It is
considered bad form.

He switched and probably lost strength learning how to do the other
exercises. Or maybe he lost strength in his cheating muscles.
Considering the weight and bad form there is a chance he was barely
hitting the bicep with the concentration curl.

They limit your ability to cheat. If you can keep your elbows and
back steady on other types of curls you get the same result. I
wouldn't call it more intense. It just has the potential of precisely
targeting the muscle. And for someone who has always cheated it may
indeed feel more intense.

It is probably possible to do a concentration curl with the aid of a
Staffordshire Bull Terrier, if he would let you of course - and you
were dopey enough to want to use him.
However, why would you use a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or an EZ Bar,
when a suitably sized dumbbell is tailor-made for the job?
Using an Arm Blaster is just more Simpson bullshit to wriggle out of
his latest cock-up. Whichever position the lifter adopts to carry out
a concentration curl, either standing bent over with a supporting arm,
or sitting with the lifting upper arm supported by the thigh/knee, the
suggestion to use an EZ Bar for this exercise is totally stupid.
The proposal to use an Arm Blaster with an EZ Bar to carry out
concentration curls is just complete and utter idiocy. But then Neil
"Bully" Simpson is a complete and utter fucking idiot. |

I think you're being silly Stephan, as men don't get pre-menstrual
anything, unless it's the rough edge of the wife's ill temper and a
refusal to get the leg over.
I suspect a "pre-menstrual mood" is anything but a
"half-awake-daze-like-state". In fact I suspect it is something much
more volatile.

Did you break your rib? I broke my rib a few years ago and was able to do
preacher curls just fine. Avoid flyes though, I think I may have broken
the rib again when it was starting to heal on the peck deck (or flyes or
something like that).

If you lean back, they stop being concentration curls, so you can move
more weight. Simple as that, I'm afraid. ;-)

The sadness of senility is perhaps a condition that awaits all of us,
and over which we are able to exercise little or no control.
However, the behaviour of some contributors here, who for reasons best
known to themselves always feel the need to grasp the most tenuous
support to help them in their silly little feuds, is the product of
nothing other than their own stupidity.
How clever can it be for them to pick a fight with someone, get a
bloody nose on a regular basis for their trouble, scream foul and run
for the alleged "killfiles", and then resort to name-calling from the
sidelines at the merest mention of their bęte noire.
I suppose if nothing else it confirms the old adage that 'birds of a
feather flock together'. |

Bollocks! (Is that the right British word?)
Senility is not inevitable. Many old people die with their mental function
intact, without having done anything to prevent senility.
In addition, we have great control over it's development. Changes in
lifestyle factors and nutritional factors can play a significant role in
preventing the disease of senility.

I've heard that smoking and speeding vastly decreases the chances
of senility ever being a problem. So far I can't tell it's not
working. ;-)

I've pulled old, senile, smoking, speeders out of car wrecks, so, your
hypothesis may need reworking

I agree. Cars make no sense. Stupidly boring way of creating a
traffic jam.

Indeed. Much better to have young, hot, naked females protesting the fur
industry to create traffic jams.

Indeed it is. It can be prefaced with the word "utter" for additional
em-pha-sis.

It is a very apt choice if you are opting to disagree emphatically
with something someone has said.

Which is probably why I chose "perhaps" to describe this capricious
deterioration of the human mental faculties.
You opted to [snip] the reference to "stupidity" exhibited by a couple
of our contributors, which was included to demonstrate the difference
between an unfortunate pernicious acquired illness and a moronic
lifestyle choice.

This from a man who speaks with some authority on the subject, given
that he talks "utter bollocks" fluently and with monotonous
regularity!

I'm too senile to have noticed that.

Actually, yes. Mental exercise is one of the recommended strategies.

I've heard that doing crossword puzzles actually has a positive impact
on keeping an edge on a person's mental sharpness. I wonder if picking
typos out of people's posts has a similiarly positive influence or
affect, er, effect. Dammit.
