What's the point of having a long life?
Smoking? People say smoking makes you live shorter.
Drinking? People say drinking makes you live shorter.
Drugs? People say drugs make you live shorter.
Over eating? People say over eating makes you live shorter.

All the reasons to enjoy life are causes of a short one... Live long and
be dull? No thanks, I'd rather go out with a bang.

If smoking, drinking, getting stoned and stuffing my face were my only
reasons for living, perhaps I'd agree with you. Fortunately, my life
is a bit richer than that.

No offense, son, but you don't impress me as being very bright.

One of the women I worked with today is 84 and she walks four miles every
day. Many of the people there are well over 70 and still going strong.
The 80 year old arond rhe corner works in her yard a good bit of almost
every day.

If you grandmother wants to go that is her choice but at 68 I still work a
lot and just recently stopped responding to fire and rescue calls. I've also
just started a new business, am on the Fire departments board, still do a
bit of coding for fun.

There are any number of simple painless ways to kill your self and I'de
certainly consider it if in bad healt.
If there is nothing wrong with heer physically she should do something.

Son, the point of having a long life is that you'll be at the end of it
quickly enough regardless. There's no sense at all in rushing things.
It goes by _quite_ quickly enough as it is.

LOL! Don't get angry with me, that you kept waiting, kept putting things
off. Now that you are at the end, there are things you want to do, but
not enough "time" to do them all...

"Oh, I wanted to go to Greece... I wanted to go to Italy... I wanted to
see the Vatican, I wanted to see Delphi," blah blah blah... Guess what
sweet cheeks, I already have... I watched glass blowing in Florence, saw
the Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica, and even saw chariot groves
on the streets of Pompeii. Ever seen the light show at the Acropolis? I
have...

There is a tapestry in the Vatican Museum... As you view it from the
left, it shows a few men standing behind a table. The corner of the
table, and their eyes, point directly at you. As you walk to the right,
the men's eyes, as well as the table corner, follow you. IT'S THE DESIGN
ON A FRICKIN RUG, and it can do that! I don't remember who the men were
supposed to be, but I vividly remember them following me...

In the Athens national museum, they have a collection of some of the best
preserved ancient greek coins in the world. Two large rooms, housing only
a small fraction of their total collection. I had the honor of seeing
coins (behind bullet proof glass), that most numismatists can't even see
pictures of.

> Son, the point of having a long life is that you'll be at the end of it

If you do things early, when you have the chance to remember them and
treasure the experience for many years to come, you don't need a long
life.

> There's no sense at all in rushing things.

Thus the cause of your lack of time to do it all.

Drugs do that. And I had a drinking glass once with a dog on it that
did that.

Coins. Wow. Ever seen a sex show in the Philippines?

Then why the fuck are you wasting any of your time talking to me?
Shouldn't you want to be away from your computer, doing stuff, rather then
talking to some random fat guy on the internet? But hey, if you want to
sit around chewing the cud, no skin off my nose... Just don't complain
about how you ran out of time.

Oh, right, _I_ get it. You're just an asshole.

One, I'm not "at the end," and, two, I've done most of the things I
wanted to do, with the sole exception of raising a child to adulthood.
Said child is one year old now; if I live to my 80s I might actually see
grandkids. Many people my age already _have_ grandkids. It's certainly
worth sticking around for.

Of course, I'm not spending all my time just being a self-centered
asshole like you seem to be.

This is called "projection." Here's a hint, dickhead: I'm not you.

I could ask you the same. I have a weakness for wounded animals
maybe?

Maybe I'm texting this on my blackberry as I prepare to skydive from

No complaints here. All the drama seems to be coming from ... um,
elsewhere.

Sounds like a lack of self worth that runs in the family.

No I wouldn't
I only meant to say humans are not "meant to be"

meaning is something that is done BY humans, not TO humans :-)

The human body has very specific needs. To argue against that flies
in the face of established science.

Not "listening" are you
I am not arguing the fact that the human body needs certain things
(like oxygen).
I am arguing that it was not "meant" to need those things.

How many times do I have to repeat my statement, before you start
trying to understand it?

That is a very good example.
When life started out, there was no oxygen,
hence the first lifeforms were not using it, indeed it would have been
harmfull to them. Alas lifeforms developped that were able to gain
more carbon by reducing the all abundant carbon-oxyde to carbon and
oxygen.
Thus oxygen rich environments came to be. And consequently lifeforms
developped that were up to those circumstances, and - of course -
lifeforms developped that were actually using the oxygen.
But nobody ever meant that to happen.
It just did.

Remember you are crossposting to alt.atheism . . . . .

Hey, Peter, you can't win this argument. God is like the Jack. It's
the card that can be any card.

You or anyone can have the most intelligent argument with scientific
support, physical evidence, and obvious common sense appeal, however
all it takes to stomp the snot out of your point of view is, "God made
it so."

Kinda the equivalent of "Because." There's no "Because why?" It's
"Because God said so. It's magic."

Rather aggravating, isn't it?

You can say, "Thus oxygen rich environments came to be. And
consequently lifeforms developped that were up to those circumstances,
and - of course - lifeforms developped that were actually using the
oxygen. But nobody ever meant that to happen. It just did" until
you're blue in the face and it won't matter.

Will not matter!

Why? Because God said so.

Because God *wanted* lifeforms to develop that way. Or, hey, if you
really want to get clever, there's Plan B. Or Plan S (for Satan!).

Lucifer is the king of lies, right? So, naturally, he prepared all
these clearly "true" bits of evidence simply to make people stray from
the straight and narrow. Beelzebub wants you to go to hell and so
he'll sprinkle your path with just the right amount of "oxygen rich
environments" yadayadas to throw you off.

See you in hell.

And remember, kids, hell is for cross-posters!

What? Oh, dang. My bad.
