Default CytoSport Muscle Milk

Anybody else hooked on this? I can't stop drinking it. $2.5 per serving... I
think I need methadone to help come off the stuff. They have to be mixing in
coca leaves or something. The GNC lady gave me one bottle and now I'm going
back to buy two cases.

Calories: 350
Total fat: 17g
Saturated Fat: 7g
Protein: 34g

Will I to turn into a fat ass with this stuff?

Richard

Yes. Everybody crows about how yummy that shit is. That's because
it's like drinking milkshakes with a little whey thrown in. Do people
think that, because it's called "Muscle Milk," all the nutrients will
magically inure to muscle protein synthesis, and nothing will be
stored as fat?

I've also noticed that some of the major candy makers are now loading
their candy bars with a little whey and soy, then putting them in
nutritional supplement aisle at the store. Yeah ... anabolic Snickers
.... uh-huh.

"Oh, I don't like regular whey 'cuz it tastes all yucky, but this
stuff is delicious!" Nobody ever stops to consider the ingredients;
they just look at the cool name and the slick label. The companies
market it, and the sheep line up to buy it.

OK.. I could replicate the flavor by adding a little MCT oil from coconut or
maybe just some coconut flavor to regular chocolate whey protein - with fat
free milk. CytoSport hooks you with the flavor, its like a drug!

I went to GNC last week looking for something with casein because I do the
workout at night, about 4 hours before bed (works best for me). I wanted
something that would release over 7 hours or so. This probably isn't the
right stuff. I tried some regular casein by ON and it tasted like TOTAL
SHIT. I would have rather eaten shit. Now looking at Iron-Tek Micell Edge..
the label looks a lot better than Muscle Milk.

Or better yet, maybe a half dozen eggs with milk before I go to bed.

It probably would be better. Don't believe all the hype you read
about the dichotomy between whey and casein. Both yield peak amino
acid levels about an hour after ingestion. Whey peaks about twice as
high as casein. Leucine, the amino acid which is probably most
important for post-exercise muscle protein synthesis, is about the
same for both whey and casein after two or three hours, and in that
first two or three hours, the area under the curve is much higher for
whey than for casein. Casein may maintain somewhat higher levels of
other amino acids (like phenylalanine) after about 1.5 hours, but it's
all down to baseline after about 5 hours.

If you feel obliged to consume casein, buy some cottage cheese.

Reading this, I came up with a great idea. I'm going to get a baseball cap
with two protein cans attached via flexible straws. I will wear this to bed!
Wait, that might not work if I turn over in my sleep.. shoot.

Perhaps you should get yourself fitted with a feeding tube. I hear
it's all the rage amongst the critically ill.

Trader Joe's has 12 ounce cans of Worldwide Pure Protein, either 21g
protein, 100 calories for $1.69, or 35g protein, 160 calories, $2.19. Casein
protein, not incredibly yummy like a shake but OK. Some carbs would need to
be added for use as a pre/post workout drink.

A g-tube isn't so bad until the doctor yanks it out of your son's stomach in
the office, and pushes a new bard button back without any warning... blood
splatters all over the cloth. Then you have a 5 yo boy sitting there
screaming, shaking and traumatized, and it looks like he got shot with a .45
in the stomach. The hell with feeding tubes. Tuesday we go through more
hell. Did I mention, I hate g-tubes.

Please don't say g-tube or feeding tube... and "critically ill" is another
bad trigger word for me. I might go nuts, again..

About the time-release protein, I settled with 12-hour MHP Probolic-SR..
seems OK. 4g fat, <5mg cholesterol, 3g carbs, 20g protein. But it has soy
in it :-(

It's pretty common household conversation when you live with a
critical care RN.

You still aren't getting the point, are you? You're worrying about
minutiae that has no significant effect. I'll bet the kid at GNC
grins from ear to ear when he sees you coming through the door.

Well, after more thought, this isn't so bad of an idea. Assuming you do the
workout at night.. you could use a naso-gastric tube with a protein drink on
a machine drip all night.. that would be perfect. But, it might be a
turn-off for women.

All the little things add up. But your NG tube idea is great.. now that I've
gotten past the initial shock. Do you use it?

What I do is mix a whey-carb drink at the beginning of my training
session and drink it throughout, along with water. Often, I drink
another one at the end of the session. And within the next few hours,
I consume some cottage cheese after I get home. All of that is
consistent with the current, up-to-date studies, except that I may
start adding a few grams of leucine powder to my whey-carb mix.

Worrying about dosing myself during the night is a bunch of crap.
What yo-yos are feeding you that crap?

Sounds good.

Can't remember which web site, but it was a big article on how one should
set an alarm clock to wake up and drink protein. It went as far as
suggesting to set the alarm clock twice.

Perhaps you could find that article again and email the brain surgeon
who wrote it. Ask him what scientific evidence there is that supports
intentional interruption of one's sleep cycle to intake protein when
you've already saturated your amino acid pool during the several hours
after resistance training.

Which web sites do you usually visit to receive these little jewels of
insight?

www.bodybuilding.com - but I also google a lot. I did a site search for
alarm clock and protein and there were 465 hits... not sure which one it
was, or if it was even on that site:
http://www.google.com/search?q=alarm...dybuilding.com

Aren't you the same guy who thinks that he is a fat ass because of Estrogen?
If so, stop crying about Estrogen and learn how to diet. Why do you bother
with this kind of shit? Why not train hard and eat correctly?

Wow! You really buy into all this horse shit put out by the supplement
companies. You are not a fat ass because of Estrogen. You are fat ass
because you eat like a pig.

I don't know if you already tried this or not. I think the taste is
greatly improved when I mix it with spring water instead of tap water.

The stuff I bought was TR Complete which is supposed to release over
many hours. It is so expensive I can bring myself to use it very
often.

I had the GNC guy tell me something like that. He said something like
all those dreams and moving around are burning muscle. I thought it
sounded kind of crazy. I guess they figure it's another 8 hours
people could be using their products.

Cool.

Agreed.

"Your body in regards to protein absorption can only process (again
depending on who you speak with) 40 to 50 grams of protein in a 2-3
hour period. Thus the reason hard cores eat every two hours, set the
alarm clock in the middle of the night," may sound like pop fitness
crap to you, but, according to "yo-yos" like Liz Willett, it's
information at least worthy of repeating. Ymmv, obviously, and see
also: http://www.usapowerlifting.com/newsl...l/medical.html

Hey, how many people sleep nine hours without waking up during that
time span? An alarm clock may just be unnecessary. Have a blender
drink at bed time and Mother Nature may wrest you from your rest. ;o)
At which time you can chug another protein shake.

Gauge the efficacy of this activity by your energy level. If you're
dropping out during the day then cancel the nighttime interrruptions.

> I had the GNC guy tell me something like that.

That sounds just like a "GNC guy," doesn't it? Actually, it sounds
like any retail salesperson trying to keep a customer in the store
until they open their wallet.

As a former GNC guy, I did my best not to spout BS, but to honestly
answer any and all questions put to me. Sadly, most customers don't
want any manner of truth but want their preconceived fantasies
reinforced.

"Yes, golden seal root will indeed guarantee you beat the
urinalyisis."

"Absolutely, the weight gain product you're interested in will
definitely help you pack on muscle mass."

And I know I've shared the mass guy and gorgeous hair chic story from
my GNC days previously.

(Googles)

Ah, yes, a precious memory from my retail daze, er, days:

"Or the man and woman who came shopping, she with long, thick, flowing
blonde hair and he carrying, say, 250 lbs. of broad-shouldered
masstrosity and asked for 1) a product that would help her to grow her
hair thicker and more luxuriant and 2) a product that would help him
gain additional muscle mass. Never mind the fact that the clerk
they're talking with is 6'1", much less than 200 lbs., with coat
hanger shoulders holding up a head that is sporting a patch of mange-
looking balding hair. Never mind that!

Customers can be idiots. But, hey, customers am peeple and me am,
too."

> I thought it sounded kind of crazy. I guess
> they figure it's another 8 hours people could
> be using their products.

Always.

But that doesn't automatically negate the possibility that drinking a
3 a.m. protein shake could be a good thing.
