Geez, that depends on where you're at in the city, and what you're
looking for and how much you want to pay!
I will be joining NYSC come their usual X-Mas season sale -- hopefully
I will avoid all those silly pesky fees! They've got lotsa
interesting classes -- something I never was into before but, heck,
why not, it could be interesting -- and you can use different
locations throughout the city (since some places will have more or
different equipment than others), depending on your level of
membership (with one type you can use all locations anytime; with the
other, only during non-peak times and weekends). Membership is around
$1K a year, which seems about the going rate in the city for "chain
clubs."
Something like Equinox looks really fancy, great decor in all their
locations, really rich...and, as you can imagine, much more
expensive. But if you like that "health spa experience" to your
workout, it's the only thing going in town outside of something even
more selective and private!
My own current gym has become quite a "dungeon" due to the owner's
changing vision...it was really big in the '80s, even wrote up in the
New York Times once, but now it's been on its way downhill and has now
hit bottom, so it looks terrible, with exposed infrastructure, and few
equipment (including free weights -- only one 20-lb. dumbbell
available for seated rear delt laterals!)...but the silver lining it
it all is that I practically have the whole place to myself now. Even
during prime time weekdays there's only like five guys working out!
So it's almost like we're working out in someone's garage gym...except
it's a very large and dilapidated garage, with almost no equipment
available (like only one flat bench, one cable machine, one power
cage, etc. -- but still enough for five or six guys working out). It
used to be a 24/7 gym, the BQE, but now it's only 24-hours three days
of the week, and weekdays, too, which is not very helpful for what I
need, which is for them to be 24-hours on the weekends. That's why
I'd joined initially, even though the place was already on the skids,
but like I said the silver lining in its continued decline has turned
out to be that I have the place basically to myself! I can even tell
the front desk staff to change the station to classical music without
any rancor!
Of course, you can't beat the city-run gyms for sheer value: ~$50 for
a year's membership with access to all locations! (It was $25 ten
years ago; I'm assuming it's jumped up some by now.) Only drawback is
that while some locations rival a decent college gym, all of them are
packed to capacity (but then again that's a problem with all the
affordable middle-class gyms in the city). |
