Donnie Thompson, an RKC among his other achievements, has contributed an
article to Pavel's most recent newsletter about his training.
Donnie is 43 years old. In the newsletter, he goes into a good amount
of details about how he uses kettlebells in his training, and credits
Pavel "for single-handedly prolonging my lifting career."
It was humbling to read how some of his "recovery" exercises are strong
than my lifts. Among the other exercises he lists are the RKC arm bar
on his recovery days. He also lists double kettlebell military presses,
dead snatches, and on his lower body max effort day, a wide variety of
kettlebell swings - single, double, both inside and outside the legs.

A triumph of modern chemistry, advances in lifting shirt design and
liberal interpretation of lifting "rules".

either a mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging idiot or someone who makes
a buck off the former. |

You're a simpleton - while it's not fair to compare today's geared
powerlifters with those from decades ago, they are still plenty strong,
and they all compete on the same stage. Let's see - the squat suit
helps you at the bottom, so let's see you just stand with the weight he
squatted, let alone squat it. Likewise, let's see you take the bench
hand off at 900 lbs., just hold it there for a few seconds, and hand it
back.
For the record, I compete raw and don't even wear a belt, but that
doesn't mean I don't respect the accomplishments of geared lifters.

Uh oh, someone doesn't like it when the truth is spoken.
Okay, "likewise" let's see him do it with no lifting aids and after a
year of having to pass frequent, strict, comprehensive drug tests. We
all know how that's going to work out.
I can't do a real 900 bench and neither can he. Of course while
nothing's guaranteed, betcha I've got a better shot than he does at
still being alive and working out at 60.

Certainly true! A 900 pound bench. Jesus. That's like ten times mine.
Well, not quite, but probably not that far off!

I'm wondering if that's true. Are some of them going to find it easier to
get or use steroids depending on where they live? There probably isn't a
lot in it.

And what would that prove? The fact that Mr Thompson is a shitload
stronger than me, or The Dark One, has no bearing on whether it's true
that he juices and uses springs to help his lifts. There's probably a
latin name for that fallacy, although there might not be, because it's so
fucking stupid nobody's bothered giving it one.

Whether or not he juices or uses springs to help his lifts has no
bearing on the fact that Mr. Thompson is a shitload stronger than you -
or any of the rest of us.
Disclaimer: I lift raw, and if were up to me, I'd outlaw gear and I'd
also drug test every lifter, but it's not up to me and I choose not to
cry about it. I show up at the same meets those guys do, and I don't
even use the belt that's allowed in my raw division.
Opinion: We've become a nation of spectators. Everyone who frequents a
weightlifting newsgroup should get off their ass and show up at a meet
from time to time, just like everyone who frequents a running newsgroup
ought to run their local 5k every year. I don't pull any great numbers
nor do I run any world-class times, but I still get out there and do it.
In my book, someone who shows up to compete starts the discussion way
ahead of someone who sits on the sidelines and complains.
Other: After a few years of AAU meets, I've been doing the Tactical
Strength Challenge the last couple of years, and I volunteer my time to
maintain the TSC web site as well. The next one will be April 5, 2008,
at a dozen or more locations across the US, Cananda, and every a few
elsewhere around the world. (The list changes, of course, so check back
from time to time, and if you're interested in hosting a TSC, read the
page on the web site about hosting - it's pretty easy - then contact
me.)
It couldn't be a more simple sport - no weight classes, 3 events:
1. A raw 3-attempt DL,
2. Bodyweight strict pullups (dead hang, no kip, throat touches the bar)
for max reps in a single set,
3. 24 kg kettlebell snatch, max reps in 5 minutes with unlimited hand
switches and putting the bell down allowed.
The only "categories" are a single one for age, which is over/under 50
years old, and an "elite" division where you do pullups weighted with 10
kg on a belt (still for max reps in a single set and still strictly
judged) and you snatch 32 kg instead of 24. And of course there is a
separate division for women, using a 16 kg bell but otherwise the rules
are the same.

There are 3 sites in Canada but they're all in Ontario. We've got Keith

WTF are you talking about? It has everything to do with his so-called
"strength". You have no idea how much anyone on here can lift unless
they've documented their lifts and further, you have no idea how much
weight Thompson can lift without the chemicals and the lifting suit,
whether he'd seem any more impressive than stronger, unjuiced,
unsuited local gym rats at Anywhere, USA or if he'd even be among the
strongest unjuiced, unsuited local gym rats.
You find it "impressive" that people can lift more weight with all the
bullshit helping them than they can without it. You find it impressive
when someone uses a "shirt" that won't even let them hold their arms
at their sides and need help getting their hands on the bar and
require huge weight just to get the bar to their chest.
Okay.
Maybe you should campaign to start a FA (forklift assisted) division
in powerlifting. I bet you'd really start to see some big numbers go
up. |

It's too bad that they don't have something like this closer to me. I
am currently shopping around for a strength sport to participate in but
so far they all seem like more bother than they are worth.
Heck, this sport wouldn't even require me to purchase any new

Jason, there are no "official officials" in the TSC as of yet - you can
host your own, even if you are the only competitor. We have a page
about "how to host" on the web site, and I am happy to provide whatever
assistance necessary. If you want to email me, I can see if there is an
RKC near you who might be interested as well - sometimes all it takes is
one person hearing another person has some interest to get a thing like
this off the ground. Use the email link from the TSC web site if you
can.

Not really. From what I've seen on powerlifting forums, they get their
juice delivered by a postman. There are plenty of very reliable pharmacies
online these days. So much so, that even the most frustrated can't go on
with blaming their lack of international success in powerlifting on it
anymore. ;-)

A lot of what? Anyway, I think that by gear Steve meant supportive
equipment, not drugs. Compared to supportive gear (and sloppy judging),
drugs aren't very effective, but they work of course.

Goofy guy is on the left. Kinda hard to spot, I'll admit. ;-)

I consider the performances of drug-addled competitors mere
entertainment, while I look with religious awe on the accomplishments
of natural drug-free athletes. The former is like a fun fuck with a
stunning slut, the latter like quiet lovemaking with a girl you can
believe in. |

ROFL!
What doesn't make sense - assuming that Freides lifts drug-free as
well as without mechanical aids - i.e. he's genuinely earned every
pound he can lift - how he can possibly "respect" the 'roid & shirt
clowns? |

Are you telling me he did this total in one contest? I find that VERY hard
to believe.

A triumph of modern chemistry, advances in lifting shirt design and
liberal interpretation of lifting "rules".
Anyone who gives a shit about modern professional powerlifting is
either a mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging idiot or someone who makes
a buck off the former.
Post your real name you fucking coward. We ALL know that you are a lard ass
who could not bench 225 with 10 shirts on, so quit crying.

Shut the fuck up. You are a jealous little anonymous asshole. You can't
bench 150, so quit crying. BTW, I have a good friend who is 72 years old,
been using steroids since the 60s and he is in FAR better shape than you
ever will be. I'm 46, had a kidney transplant and I gaurantee I would kick
your ass on 99% of every movement in the gym. You don't even have the balls
to post your name, so you can't back up shit.

This clarifies which of my previously mentioned categories you fall
into.

It was one of those things - the guy who set up the site, and was
instrumental in getting the TSC idea off the ground, wasn't interested
enough to keep the site current, so I volunteered. He sent me what he
had and I took it from there. I pay for the hosting, too, but it's not
much, something like $100 for 2 years, I think.

Yup, a regular, 3-lift PL meet. I confess I don't keep up on all the
PL federations - I just lift AAU and am happy with that. Perhaps Keith
or someone else who knows the lay of the land can tell us if the Fed in
which Donnie did this is drug tested, how strict or not the judging is,
etc. If you read the article, the distinction of having the biggest PL
total has belonged to some pretty big names over the years.
Just looked at the article again - it says this was done at the 2008 IPA
Pro-Am in Columbus, OH. A bit of further Google - it took place on
January 19. A further bit of poking around found the full results page: http://www.lexenxtreme.com/images/pr...s_20070120.pdf
Donnie weighed in at 375 lbs. - that's more than Keith Hobman and me put
together.
If you look at the totals column, the two guys above him totaled 2620
and 2805 lbs., and the guy after him in the list totaled 2490. That's a
lot of iron, however they managed to move it.

They did it over a weekend. Every day they came by the gym and lifted 100
