Yesterday, the Dutch conquered both the male and female World Championship
Allround Speedkating Trophy.
And by a large margin.
Funny thing is, Sven Kramer skated a World Record at the 10 in Thialf, our
local Speed Skating Oval.
This was done by using regular clap skates. And a regular suit. Our new clap
skates and suites, are even better.
His time was 12.48,88. Incredible, since its below sea level. 1.72 sec.
faster then his old record, set at the Olympic Oval in Galgary. (Where
Yvonne Van Gennip humiliated the East Germans in 1988)
Maybe Sven will use them in Salt Lake City, at the World Championships for
distances.
The quality of the ice in Thialf is second to none, but there is one, or two
actually, tiny problems.
Thialf is below sea-level, and the weather here is dominated by low pressure
areas.
The circumstances in Salt Lake are a LOT better. Less humidity as well.
But, we are working on that little problem.
In the same manner we did when we created the Delta Works.
In 2018, our new Oval will be finished, and it will be something the World
has never seen before.
At the exact location of the present Thialf, we will build a new one. The
present Thialf is 4 meters below sea level.
Our new Oval will be elevated to 1200 meters ABOVE sea level.
This will be a demonstation of Dutch architecture/engineering at his finest.
We are talking State of the Art here.
And most people here are probably still around to witness it.
The only secret i can reveal, at this moment anyway, is that some large
German companies will have a big part in this project as well. So in the
years to come, i guess i have a lot of work to do.
