| | | Eating before morning training hello all,
i am starting training again after a year off, and want to train first
thing in the morning before work. problem i have is eating the right
food before. what do recommend i eat before the gym? i intend getting
up and going straight to the gym, so have say 15-30 minutes between
waking and starting training. i am mixing aerobic training and light
weights, and part of my goal is weight loss.
TIA |

Do a quick whey protein drink with a bit of table sugar.
Check out the book "Nutrient Timing" for details. |

Don't. Eat a good, starchy meal the previous evening, then drink a sugary
sports drink on your way to the gym and while you work out. You don't have
time to digest a meaningful quantity of real food on the morning.

Hmm.
Good luck!

That may not be enough time between the meal and the work out. Consider
eating after the work out. Something with plenty of protein. Protein
shakes can make decent breakfast. If You are worried about Your blood
sugar being low in the morning, have a small glass of orange juice or a
sports drink before You leave for the gym. |

You should work out on an empty stomach only if fat loss is your only
goal. In which case, try taking 200 mg caffeine when you wake up and
do some vigorous cardio, maybe including intervals, at the gym, then
go home and eat. Don't do this if you're not going to eat afterwards.
For muscle gain, do not work out on an empty stomach.

I do 2 pieces of whole wheat toast with low saturated fat margarine, 1
glass low fat milk and 1 glass of orange juice. After my workout I eat 2
more pieces of whole wheat toast.

This sounds good, too, but it might be better if the toast is white
bread (high-glycemic index for fast digestion and absorption). The
Vitamin C in o.j. should replenish that lost through sweat. Two more
pieces of toast -- carbs -- afterwards help restore muscle glycogen.
You should probably still get some (more) protein in there, though,
even though you sound like you're "only" a runner. |

You have the lactose in the milk and the sucrose in the juice. I do not eat
white bread. Actually I am a walker working on endurance and the moment.
Next month I start working on speed. I do about 4 miles every other day.

Everyone's different and what works for some people will be a complete
failure for others.
Personally I never eat anything before I run in the morning. I always
do an hour of running ( somewhere between 7 1/2 and 9 miles depending
on if I am just dogging it or feeling relatively sharp ).
So a strong cup of cofee is it for me. Some breakfast only after
getting the run in. |

True -- but while that's an important principle to keep in mind, in
the meantime we deal with the probability that what works for many
should work for...many!

And I'm okay either way...whether on a full stomach in Army basic
training or nothing at all on the occasional morning pleasure-jog, I
may be slower but I've never been incapacitated by the presence of
food.
Then again, I very rarely run more than three miles!

It's fascinating to me, how differently runners and weight-lifters
train...in the Army, I never realized there was a difference...I had
an "innocent," "holistic" view of physical fitness then.... |

Ah, a walker!
Yes, I'd agree that milk, juice, and some toast would be adequate for
you! =) |

With that premise then many of the serious runners that I know don't
really want to eat much ( if anything ) if they are going to run
"early".
Most ( well many ) of us really have enough calories in our system
from the day before to deal well with some exercise.
If you are a diabetic or prone to blood sugar level problems etc of
course that's a whole different situation probably.

I wasn't aware that the Army provided any significant relevant
approach toward obtaining holistic views of training.
I was more under the impression that you picked up a backpack, a
rifle, put on your boots and started running until they told you that
you could stop. |

I have chosen canola and extra virgin olive oil for cooking and dressings
because the have the higest non saturated vs saturated fat ratio. I very

Indeed -- you runners can have an almost diametrically opposite
training program than weight-lifters and bodybuilders!

Damn, I haven't ran one of those in years! Those are fun, yes. I
wish they don't interfere with strength and mass gains, though, 'cause
I'm much more into weight-lifting nowadays, and prolonged cardio is
supposed to sap into that.

They don't exactly hold classes on it, but it does inform, at the
doctrinal level, their P.T. program.
What's weird is that they still do sit-ups, unlike the Marines and Air
Force -- yes, Air Force -- who have gone over to crunches.

How about olive oil? There's a margarine I prefer that's made from that.
