Default Exercise? But I hate exercise!

Hello,

When I was a kid, I did NOT like exercise or PE class. Now that I'm an
adult, I spoke to a trainer, asking for advice on exercise. He
recommended some exercises that were surely good, but it was all too
much for me. I need to start simply: let's climb the hill by the park,
before we climb Mount Everest. Hey, let's climb the *speed bump*
before that!

I'm age 48 and definitely out of shape. So, what would you recommend
for someone like me?

Also, I would like for my kids to have a chance at better fitness than
I've got. They are, presently, ages 11-16, and some of them dislike
exercise as much as I did. What kinds of start-at-the-beginning
exercises would you recommend for them?

In particular, let's NOT do the exercises that would help them lose
weight. They don't need that.

Thank you very much!

Ted Shoemaker

Walk. Start by doing simple things like parking at the far end of the
parking lot, increase gradually. Find a pleasureable destination if you
can.

Walking is fine for kids, too.

Find what they like or if they have friends that play a sport they might
like.

Especially if you are walking to, or at, an interesting place that they
enjoy. Go to a zoo and walk. Take a hike over an interesting trail. Take
a walking tour that involves sites that your kids might like. If your
oldest child is thinking about colleges--visit college campuses and take
a walking tour.

Plus, there are activities, like dancing, that aren't sports but offer
exercise. You might try the video game "Dance Dance Revolution." Kids
can burn a lot of calories playing that, and, while it's a video game,
kinds can exercise more than their thumbs playing.

Some activities, while they might be considered sports, can also just be
recreational, non-competitive, and fun. Some that come to mind are
biking, skateboarding, in-line or ice skating, bowling, table tennis
(AKA ping pong), wall climbing, playing paintball (supervised, of
course,) or lazer tag. Or, if water activities might appeal to you or
your kids, try swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, snorkling, or scuba
diving.

How can you expect that we will find a solution for you? You say that
you don't like anything physical and ask us to invent something which
you would like regardless. You do not seem to seek a solution. You
seem to seek an excuse.

Fine by me. Walk on your hands for speed or distance. I hope I was
unrealistic enough to provide you with much needed excuses.

For the kids I would recommended any sports offered by school or town
you live in. Sports are usually more fun than just exercising.
They will need to find something they are good at. It isn't going to
be any fun if they are on the bench all the time. Bike riding can be
fun if you live in a rural area.

For yourself I don't know what to recommended. I work with a guy that
did circuit training. You do one set of weights on each piece of
equipment in the circuit. And there is always the cardio equipment
like the treadmill. But if you are 48 and never exercised you will
probably like it less now then you did as a teen. Maybe you could do
something with kids like bike riding or just playing catch with a
baseball.

Getting a routine route to walk every day is a good start. It's
exercise. You will increase your abilities. You will discover that it
works for you, just like it works for everyone else. You will discover
that the goons you met in high school PT are no longer part of your life.

You will eventually enjoy it. From there to the 500lb deadlift is just a
matter of time and persistence.

I took three gym classes in my senior year. I loooved PE. Ran cross
country four years (varsity one), track two years, and even took a
rather unsuccessful shot at wrestling in 12th grade, too.

One reason many people give up on weights is that they do too many sets
during those first weeks of training. So if you're going to lift, I
recommend you start with one set of 8 to 12 reps for each exercise.
Gradually building up to 3 or 4 sets over the next couple of months.

Well, yes, the attitude adjustment as mentioned elsewhere in this
thread. And a look see at http://theabsdiet.com/ for info on, yeah, the
Abs Diet. That and picking up a men's bodybuilding magazine. Women do
love the male model types, so if you like women then that should serve
as motivation to get back in shape via progressive weight training
a.k.a. bodybuilding.

Just get them involved in sports in general. Soccer, baseball, etc.
Whatever's available. Make your wife drive them to practice. It'll keep
her out of your hair. ;o) And, hey, if you're madly in love then split
the duties. Your kids will thank you and maybe NOT put you in the
nursing home when it's "your time," you lazy bastard. ;o)

I believe that this guy needed something on the lines I wrote. His
main problem is, that he wants to be able to say to himself that he
"tried", but was "overcome by obstacles" just to avoid the feeling of
guilt.

So, yes. I think that the best thing in this case is to destroy this
strategy. He might find then some sort of goals, and we might be able
to help him in achieving them.

Yes, Andrzej, that was a well rationalized self-justification. With a
little extra courage, you may learn to accept it for what it is. It's
called the BUTCH THE FUCK UP approach. You see, it been recognized
for over a decade in this newsgroup that those who allow themselves to
whine and avoid effort will never be effective at strength training.
I realize, of course, that such concepts are anathema to the friendly
butt-kissers and hand-holders who see themselves as The New World
Order of this newsgroup, but that's just the way it is.

I think there is truth to what you say, and there is truth to what they
say. Discussing this topics without specific examples makes not much
sense.

Unfortunately, John "The Liar" Williams is not very good with
"specific examples" of his rash statements.

That sums up just what sort of a lawyer the lying bastard is!

For this guy, i recommend 20 sets of heavy squats, followed by 20 sets of
heavy barbell rows.
Can be done within 2 hours. It wont kill you.

Torturing people can be fun at times...

Have a mandatory "outdoor hour" every day to avoid
the distraction of indoor passive electronic entertainments.
You'll probably start filling it with some sort of activity
out of boredom. Doesn't have to be some rigorous
exercise- just get moving. Enforce the same
outdoor electronic curfew on the kids for an hour each day too.

You could drop him into a pool with no ladder to get out. Flopping
around in the water for a few hours would be good exercise.

And i am willing to bet he would swim like a fish.

Perhaps we just should send him to a high security "facility", were there
are several 250+ pounders who havent seen a woman for more then a decade.

I am pretty sure that within days he will start to strengthen those muscles,
and stop complaining about the fact that he doesnt like to exercise.

Yeah, putting him together in the same cel as "Tyrone" will help getting him
at the weights.

Typical of all lawyers, no?
Isn't it pronounced, in some parts, "liar", anyway? As in, I want my liar?
But it does explain a lot--dint know jmw was a pod person.

In addition to being the party nominee for the Independent Party of the
Proctologically Violated®© (M)asses (which, for the unawares, is every
working man, woman, child in the USofA), I am one of the founders of the
International Consortium for the Neutering of All Lawyers, and president of
the American chapter, Americans for Neutering All Lawyers, better by its
acridnym, ANAL.
We recongize the need for lawyers--butt another necessary evil on this
planet-- but we also see the need to limit their procreation.
The real question is, tho, to accomplish sed neutering w/ or without
anaesthesia?
Without would save the state a lot of money.

jmw is a perfect example. Do you really want a case like this procreating?
I think not.

Problem is, we have trouble retaining legal counsel. We do offer, for
anyone willing to do pro boner work, exception from sed operation. They
will still have take something like salt peter, or the Big Pharm equivalent.

John "Liar" Williams is impotent and childless, as a search through

Still, accidents do happen.
Fer example, if you are economizing on hot water, and yer sister jumps in
the bathwater after you (meaning jmw) just finished beating his meat in said
bathwater, pregnancy can occur.

Happens more in England than here in the states, but it does happen.
Oh, and in Kentucky, altho such pregnancies don't have much to do w/
bathwater, but rather, keeping warm at night. Hey, shit happens....
Anyway, neutering is still highly recommended.
And if the ICNAL/ANAL has anything to do with it, it will become mandatory.

I didn't know that people with masters degrees in physics went to work
