Default Fatty liver

Hey, I was wondering if any of you weight liftin guys were ever diagnosed
with a fatty liver ?

Im 33 but started lifting and putting on weight 3 years. I started at 180
pounds and now weigh 240. Im 6' 2" tall.

Im can lift almost 3 times as much as I could 3 years ago..so its been a
nice success. But was surprised to see my liver tests were abnormal. ALT
and AST numbers were high. and actually I graphed my last 3 years of blood
tests and there was a steady climb the whole time with those 2 numbers. I
also had a small amount of protein in my urine. Hopefully only because of
my high protein diet. maybe my body is finally telling me to chill ?

I've been on a high protein diet those 3 years as well. But I also ate
really crappy foods on my days off. High in fat / processed. I'll
estimate that I have about 15% body fat. So im not the slimmest..but in
pretty decent shape.

I was just wondering if this seemed normal? The ultrasound revealed the
fatty liver and im doing blood work again in a month. Im going to take it
easy and only have 2 small to medium sized meals a day...drink alot of water
, salad , and eat good food in general. Will probably go to the health
store and get one of those Greens powder drink mix. I hear the liver loves
the greens.

Im a bit bummed as I cant lift like a maniac anymore till this gets sorted
through. Hopefully its nothing serious. They say people with a fatty
liver sometimes have nonalcoholic steatohepatitis as well.

Any advice or input is much appreciated.

John

I'd wager that your bodyfat percentage is nowhere as low as you think
it is. I'd also wager that when you get it checked (as you should)
you will get a big surprise: 15% at 110kg is pretty lean.

Agreed. There are also other causes of fatty liver that need to be
investigated. I'm assuming the OP is not a binge drinker/alcoholic.

hmmm..So it may be more common among us then we think. Kovac, are you
hungarian? I am.

Regarding the binge drinking thing, I never drink alcohol. Once every 2
months a drink or 2 at max.

Im not sure how your ultrasound clarified that it was ok ? Did it initially
say you had it....and then lost weight...had ultrasound again and it was
gone ?

Ultrasounds dont show scarring or anything...so its hard to tell how messed
up the liver really is without a biopsy..which I really dont want to do.
But I really would like to know if its damaged or not.

You've got other oddities in your blood work, right? Well, something
certainly is amiss in the liver. First thing to do is lose fat. I know
you don't think you've got a problem there, but even thin 'looking'
people can have dangerous levels of intra-abdominal fat (another reason
why BMI measurements are complete bullshit). A liver biopsy is NOT a
good experience. If your doctor orders one, he'd better have a damn good
reason. given the choice, I'd have a dozen marrow biopsies on the same
day rather than one liver biopsy.

Years ago had a Doctor tell me he suspected I had fatty liver from an
ultra sound and wanted me to do a biopsy. I decided to pass on that
and consulted another Doc who put me on a low glycemic, high fiber
diet...with an increase in aerobic work.

Lost a lot of fat and feel much better. Recent tests show a liver in
excellent health.

Alcohol and stress can also make a fatty liver or near fatty liver
situation much worse also.

Crap, im really bummed about losing this weight that i've worked so hard for
the last 3 years. I want to lose the fat but maintain as much muscle as
possible. Any ideas ?

If I do a strict fast and just drink water all day, you lose fat and muscle
that way right ? I wonder what the ratio is. 80% fat / 20% muscle ? (that
was a guess)

Should I just continue eating like 2 medium sized meals a day ? how much
protein ?

any help would be great.

Seconded.

And in the meantime, do some googling/research on Milk Thistle.
Can't hurt, might help.
