I will turn 60 soon and have had a fitness lifestyle for a long time.
I see a fair number of people in the 40-70 age group at my gym who
suddenly appear after having taken out a trial membership for a short
period. Some might even be accompanied by a personal trainer. While a
few stay on and become more permenent members, the majority soon
disappear, either having been discouraged by lack of immediate
results, no one to relate to about what they wish to do, little
information about how to go about what they wish to do, lack of
inspiration, a slight feeling of being out of place being surrounded
by many younger people who have advanced nicely, or a combination of
several of the above.
I have started a blog targeted exactly to this crowd. Please visit me
at

chronological posts on this topic
