This is why I always use the squat rack here at home.
All most all weight lifting deaths happen this way.

A guy who gave me my bench instructions said when lifting alone never
put collars on. That way if you can't get the bar up, you can probably
get one side up. That will dump that side and flip the bar off of you.
Personally, I think any but the lightest benches are too dangerous to do
ever alone. |

I wonder if the bar slipped off his fingertips as he was racking it. A
crushing blow to the neck? I've seen 315 slip off a man's fingers and
the bar slam down on his sternum. Ouch! He was okay, but it was a big
man versus, what the news report - or the one person interviewed -
referred to as a petite boy.

Agreed. Who was the former NFL player who also died related to
benching?
(Googles)

In my competition days I have seen 5 guys simply drop the bars on
themselves. One of them was carried out on a stretcher. One of them dropped
455 pounds on himself, he actually finished the meet. All of them were using
that suicide grip (thumbs on same side as fingers on the bar). But even with
a light weight, you could get careless and miss one side of the rack when
setting the bar down and have it fall on your head. That stuff just happens
so fast. |

I had a sudden "oh shit" moment today that could've been the end of me. Went
for a bike ride along the beach today. Almost home, I heard a car skidding
right behind me. About all I could do was think "I'm going to find out what
it feels like to get hit by a car." I felt the impact but nothing much
happened. The car had veered and clipped my rear wheel. The speed limit on
this street was 50 MPH so the car must have been going pretty quick when it
hit, but I didn't even go down.

Yeah, it's really a shame because it's such a great way of staying fit.
Today the guy at the bike shop told me that he'd been hit from behind on PCH
by a woman who'd had a stroke while driving. He smashed the windshield, then
went over the roof and off the back of her car, but didn't break any bones.
Severe road rash, though. He had the bent bike frame hanging on the wall
like a trophy.
Before the car clipped me on the same ride yesterday I had to swerve to
avoid another guy pulling out from a parking space and several
drunk/clueless pedestrians stepped into my path without
looking (I live in a beach town). A couple rides before that a guy raced
ahead of me and made a
sharp right turn because he underestimated my speed and I almost landed on
his trunk.
I gave up riding a motorcycle about 10 yrs ago because I felt I was on
borrowed time but it seems a (prudent) motorcyclist is less likely to be
injured than a bicyclist who obeys the rules because the latter is always in
some danger of being run down from behind. Maybe I'll try mountain biking
for awhile. |

My guess is most of your close calls have been because people are talking on
their cell phones while driving. I really wish they would pass laws and
start ticketing people for that. Almost every close call I have had in my
vehicle or on my bike have been with people yacking on the phone therefore
having diminished attention to their driving.
I have a mountian bike that I ride during the week. I ride through a rarely
traveled neighborhood to some trails that go through some timber. Its a
really good workout. One time a dear ran across the path in front of me.
There is a really big hill with fence posts laying across it to prevent
erosion. As I am climbing the hill I have to jump the fence posts like
curbs. I have a front shock on my bike but no rear suspension.
On the weekends I load my racing bike in my trunk and take it to a near by
lake. The roads around the lake are in really good condition and there is
not much travel on them. The people who are driving on them are driving slow
because it is a recreational area and there are a lot of families with small
children around. It is 7 1/2 miles per trip around the lake. I take a cooler
full of fruit and do 3 or 4 "laps". I stop and have a bit of fruit and get
fresh water out of the cooler on each "lap". |

NOW, we know why you are having prostrate problems.
I hope you are using the new "prostrate seats" that are out. I have one on

Maybe to need to take with a sports doctor about the bike seat.

I keep my road bike in my pickup and ride it three days a week in the "BIG
Cemetery". It's two miles around the outside road BUT you do have to watch
for snakes.
I have my "Mountain Bike" setup as a city bike with 1" slicks and folding
baskets on the sides. I use it for little store trips or to pay bills are
just run around town. It has a flashing red light on the rear so they can
get a better aim at me!

What did it for me was a crash where I was cut off by some crazy driver
that didn't want to wait for me so he could turn right. Instead he sped
up along side of me, realized I was going much faster than he would have
guessed, and he did a panicked right turn (barely) in front of me to
avoid missing his destination. I was forced to turn right as well to
avoid crashing into him and my front wheel sank to the hub in a slotted
storm drain.
Fortunately, I took most of the blow on my helmet (which cracked down
the middle). I was dazed enough that I needed help from some near by
pedestrians to get out of my pedals (they weren't clipless), and in the
confusion my helmet got thrown away.
I wish I still had that helmet.

I still own a scooter that I ride when the weather is nice. I stay off
freeways and exceptionally busy streets, and I feel safe enough. It's
not exercise though .
I probably should get a mountain bike, but after riding a road bike for
years even nice mountain bikes feel sluggish and lame. These days when
I want a little cardio I either throw around a kettlebell or just run.
There are still lots of places where you can go on a road bike that are
safe enough, but I used to really like the convenience of a form of
exercise that was also a useful form of transportation.
Unfortunately, road biking has become like mountain biking. You are
basically forced to drive somewhere safe to ride and then exercise.

Hey, when your time is up then your time is up.
Mountain biking? A tree will fall on you maybe. God forbid! And,
definitely, very glad that you survived the incident.
When I ride my motorcycle I'm always looking for the "what if"
situation: What if that guy runs the red light? What if that person
turns left? What if I follow too closely? You ever hear of SIPDE?
Anyway, there's no escaping fate, what have you.
One of the craziest motor vehicle deaths I remember reading about was
when a guy was driving along, minding his own business, he drives
under an overpass or bridge while a big truck hauling a backhoe was in
the lane going in the other direction. Unfortunately for the guy NOT
driving the big truck was that the big truck was too high to make it
under the bridge without contact being made by... the backhoe. The
backhoe flipped off the trailer and landed on... the guy NOT driving
the big truck.
Now what are the odds of that happening?
"Honey, I'm going to the mall. I'll be right back. Unless, of course,
a backhoe magically lands on my vehicle."
I would have failed that multiple choice question. "What could
possibly kill you on the highway?"
a) Head on collision with car crossing the yellow line
b) Bridge collapses
c) Flying backhoe crash lands on your head
d) Other

Years ago I had a mountian bike set up similarly. I lived in a much smaller
town. I rode back and forth to work everyday on it. |

I actually crashed into the car and flown over it. Not as bad as it
sounds, actually. Bike was fine and I had maybe some scratches, but I
don't remember any.

You would be better off crashing straight into the car. ;-)

I personally do not care for safety, but push-bikes are probably the
most dangerous road vehicles in common use now. I still remember a
mother having two kids on a bike plus a trailer with a toddler inside.
Damn crazy. She looked frugivorous to me.

Curt, I live and have lived overseas a lot of my life.
I NEVER walk in a room or meet a person on the street with out doing the
"What If Routine".
I always have a way out and a way to "TRY" to protect myself.

I used one of those "male friendly" saddles for awhile and didn't seem to
help much.

I put about 1000 miles on a Brooks saddle and finally got rid of it. |

Just for fun, post a question to rec.bicycles.soc or .misc asking whether
helmets provide reliable crash protection and you're almost guaranteed to
start a contentious 100-post thread.

I agree they're not as fast as road bikes but I like that they're easier to
control in traffic and you get fewer flats.

No, but I was vigilant that way when I rode a motorcycle. BTW, I had a Honda
V65 Magna, one of the first ever crotch rockets and a fantastic bike. About
the same time I got it my brother, who could not afford a Harley in his
younger years but became very successful, opened a Harley dealership. The
patrons grumbled when I parked my "rice burner" there so he asked me to park
on the side whenever I came to visit. It was hilarious how elitist those
Harley guys were. I like Harleys but they're way overpriced for what you
get, IMO.

Well, normal bicycle, I guess. At least some people I knew used this
term to avoid confusing normal bicycles with motorbikes. Both are
bikes, for short.

What does this term "crotch rocket" mean? I thought that it described a
race replica kind of bike, but Magna is definitely not one of those.
Though I heard that the smaller Magnas like yours actually handled,
which wasn't usual for Jap bikes of that era.

Not my style, though I could try a Buell.

I've heard the term used more generally to include screaming fast bikes, but
not necessarily limited to more aerodynamic bikes. You get both narrow and
broad definitions here: http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...=crotch+rocket
The V65 Magna was the fastest production bike for a short while in the 80's
and it was plenty fast for me and my slow reflexes and low threshold for
excitement. Nowadays there are plenty of smaller bikes that'll beat it. (But
it'll still blow the buddy pegs offa Curt's lil' Sportster.) |
