| | | Gold's GYm... just got back from a Gold's Gym ...won't say where, but I was
disappointed. The whole reason I went was because by college gym
(still go even though no longer in that school) was closed for the
holiday season and I needed to lift. It was one of those "big" Gold's
gyms... but you could tell it was all for cardio bunnies ... ... and,
yes,.... you guessed it, people were doing wrist curls in the squat
racks (only two there)... only 3 bench press stations -- all full...
should I have expected this from Gold's or do some Gold's actually have
a decent amount of squat racks , benches, etc.? |

The last Gold's gym I trained in was in MountainView, CA. It had about eight
squat racks along one wall and the rest of the weights room was extremely
well equipped. There was a relatively small, separate cardio room where the
bunnies could congregate to watch TV. All in all, an excellent facility.

I went to my local gym twice this week and both days it was packed
solid. I had trouble finding a locker on Tuesday. Then I realized
it is the "New Years Resolutions" crowd. The regulars anticipate it
will last about a month before they give up and quite.
My gym has 14 bench presses and only two squat racks. And people do
deadlifts, military press, and even curls in the squat racks. They
still fill up less often then the lat pulldown station. |

Perhaps you meant "quiet" ?
Or was it "quit" ?
Either way perhaps some "English as a second language classes" at a

Tracing his IP address doesn't tell you much. Columbia, South
Carolina has three Gold's Gyms. However, if the "college gym" to
which he is referring is the one at University of South Carolina, he's
probably got high expectations. I've trained in their gym; the
equipment there is plentiful and quite excellent. |

Hah, good job. Yeah, the Strom Thurmond center is pretty nice, but I
actually go to their older center, Blatt. Within the last two years or
so, they increased the size of that weight room, and I think they have
about 5 or 6 flat benches for bench pressing... and maybe 4 or 5 squat
racks, and that's their "old" center. Gold's was ok I guess for some
people. Let me state some of its positives:
1) The first impression I got was that it was mostly for cardio
bunnies, but, on second thought, I guess bodybuilders would like the
place as well, because they did seem to appear to have a lot of
updated, nautilus-type equipment. This particular GOld's just is not
the place really for people who want to do deadlifts, squats, clean and
jerks, etc. But that's ok... I guess my whole question was whether
most GOld's were like this, and someone said that he had been to one
where it wasn't.
One additional negative though (even for bodybuilders who would
otherwise like the place) I thought was that the weight room seemed to
me to be incredibly cramped. It's like they fit as much into the space
as they could, which is one thing that made clean and jerks seem like
not such a great idea. At the places I'm used to going, there is much
more space between equipment. The two squat racks for example at
Gold's were basically one or two steps apart from each other, so it
just felt cramped. |

I should add that it wasn't just the squat racks that were a couple of
steps away from each other -- it's that way at a lot of places
probably, but it seemed like they were too close to a bunch of other
machines as well that were right in front of them. I don't know
....just evertying felt cramped. |

I don't know which one I used. I remember it was at the bottom of a
hill. I was staying at the National Advocacy Center for a week. I
just remember the students looking at me, an older guy who was lifting
more than most of the college stud boys. |

Or maybe you had toilet tissue stuck to the bottom of your shoe.
Seriously, John, what number of students do you believe was looking at
you? And, who exactly, may I ask, do you think was paying attention to
amount of weight you were lifting? Hmm. And, I mean, as often as you've
jabbed at my profession, would you care to explain your
characterization of at least some of those students as, "college stud
boys"? Curious. Odd, in fact.
Just sayin'.

I'm sure that some Gold's do actually have a decent amount of squat
racks, benches, etc.
Gold's in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, USA has two free standing squat
racks, a power rack, a Smith machine, two decline benches, four
benches, a rowing station, a seated press station, a rack of dumbbells
from one-pound pink vinyl-covered jobbies (that I purchased as a gag
gift for the gym) up to a pair of 140's, a Universal-type machine with
an assisted-chin/dip station, two pulldown stations, a seated cable row
station, a crossover station, and two additional pulley set-ups.
There's also a hack machine, a leg press machine, seated calf, standing
calf, a host of selectorized machines, Hammer Strength machines, ten
Life Fitness treadmills and a number of other cardio bunny (GOOOO
BUNNIES! Thaz mah home team.) machines, a women's area with dumbbells
and selectorized machines, a bike room, a frigging huge aerobics room,
locker rooms, a babysitter area, clothing sales area just inside the
entrance with two coolers stocked with energy and protein drinks, a
front desk and adjacent juice bar (no ferns, unfortunately), a cafe
area with three Gold's logo tables and chairs, a cubicle area for sales
associates, the owner's office, two water fountains, a separate
restroom with baby changer set-up, a chiropractor's office, tanning
room, and probably some other schtufff I've failed to include.
Things are jammed in there, but I typically hit the gym later in the
evening or close to closing time. It's my favorite time to workout and
it, luckily, corresponds with the less crowded time.
I honestly have never seen anyone perform curls of any kind in the
power rack at Gold's in Carlisle. A friend has performed curls at the
one squat rack there, but with 135-plus, so that's reason enough. Plus
his arms are bigger than some legs which is another point in his favor
so far as use of the squat rack is concerned, imo.
Now, regardless of that unsolicited description of the Gold's in my
neck of the woods, xyzer, would you please describe your Dream Gym?
Mine would include an in-gym theatre with surround sound and free
viewings of the entire collection of GMV <http://www.gmv.com.au/> and
Mesomorphosis <http://www.mesomorphosis.com/> DVD inventory and free
personal training by the likes of Lenda Murray, Iris Kyle, Adela
Garcia, Jenny Lynn, and, hey, why not Kim Basinger?
The gym owner would sponsor all-expenses-paid trips to the ASC,
Olympia, etc., of course, and employee nutritionists and gurus such as
Ron Harris <http://www.ronharrismuscle.com/>, Chris Aceto
<http://www.muscletech.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/MTStore/blog.jsp>,
and Larry Pepe <http://www.muscleradio.com/host/index.html>.
And, naturally, there'd be a full supply of the various products
manufactured by PLACEBOŽ Brand Supplements provided for all gym
members gratis.

I think Gold's gym is just a way for smaller gyms to snag a big name.
It may also allow gyms to share membership if you travel around. I
have a feeling that most are not like each other. And like I said in
the other post this time of year is packed with people. It may seem
crowded now but probably not in February or march.
I don't work out at a Gold's but it is probably very similar in style.
I do deadlifts and military presses by the squat rack. I am sure there
much be free weight things you can do there but it is all stuffed off
into a corner. |

Effing crybaby. You're, I suspect, the same person who would complain
that there wasn't enough equipment if the situation was reversed. You'd
be satisfied with a nice clean and jerk center? Empty gym with the
exception of a hyooooge platform and twenty Olympic sets?
Not likely.

thin-skinned adj. Having a thin rind or skin. Oversensitive, especially
to criticism or insult.
That's you, Johnny.
You can attack, but you can't defend.
One tiny scratch and you're done. The insult of the imagery of you with
toilet tissue trailing behind you through the gym and a question of why
you'd use the term "college stud boys" and you suddenly find it
necessary to call me an attention-seeking bitch boy. Well, a clue for
you, Williams. Better that than a pompous, hypocritical, thin-skinned
braggart.

self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts. http://groups.google.com/group/misc....b0016886fc7635
I'd say you should've done some advance research before making that
comment. Lesson leaned here, John? Doubtful.

posts, right? Why, they might even get the impression that you've

I have been to Golds gyms all over the country and I have a hard time
believing any large Golds would have three flat benches. The Golds I go to
is smallish by Golds standards and has at least 6 stations. The larger
Golds I go to has 8. Assuming you have not been to many Golds gyms, how do
you know the one you were in is "big"? Sounds like small one. Regardless,
one can get a good workout with pretty much anything if one needs to. |

I promise you I only saw 3 flat benches...maybe they had another
weightroom somewhere though I dno't know... I call it "big" because it
wasn't in a strip mall like many I've seen and actually had two floors
and a basketball court. It even has a juice bar in the place. I guess
most of the GOld's I've come across have been only one floor.
Again, the gym did have many positives... was clean, had updated
equipment, etc. Maybe I should think about using some of that kind of
equipment sometime. |

I should add that perhaps this is a smart strategy for the Gold's at
that particular location. I think most serious powerlifters and even
bodybuilders (neither of which I am) probably go to other locations,
and the market for people who want a good cardio workout and just
overall muscle definition, as opposed to getting huge, is why perhaps
there were only 3 flat benches there... simple economics and since
Gold's is in the business of making money, that's what works best for
them. |

Not really. Chest exercises are the most popular weights in the gym.
Sounds to me like they have a poor layout of the equipment. Cardio
equipment shouldn't be taking up all that much room. Even the tiny
hole in the wall gym I went to on a military base had two flat benches
and an incline. Maybe you should ask the guy for a tour of the
facility. |
