Default Holy Sh** x-rays. :-(

I had the spinal x-rays that the Ortho requested this morning.
There can be drawbacks to being buds with the x-ray techs...
I got to look at them.

One more bad fall and I could end up permanently in a wheelchair from
the looks of the mis-alignment of 5 of the vertebrae in the lower Lumbar
spine.

<sigh>

It was ugly.

The doc will probably recommend major back surgery.

Me? I'm going to look for a good chiropractor and pray my insurance will
cover it.

Looking for pity? No. I'm just very drunk and pissed off at the moment.

I'll pay for a good Chiro' out of my own pocket before resorting to back
surgery. I don't know a single person (that I know personally) that has
had permanent good, pain free results from back surgery.

This sucks.

Part of it is probably scoliosis. I had abnormal spinal curvature back
when I was a teenager. Between the ages of 14 and 15, I had manipulative
therapy with a good Chiropractor that fixed my spine. The last x-ray
they took was perfectly straight. 18 months of therapy was better than
surgery and a rod up my spine!

What precipitated this was a bad fall back on the 4th weekend in April...

I was doing my police dispatch sit-in for the CPA class I was taking
with our local PD. Their dispatch station is up on sort of a raised
platform. I did not realize that there was a step down into the back
hallway. It was dark. I went to step on to what I thought was a level
floor when there was actually about a 10" step _down_.

Lost my balance and fell very hard.

That's what precipitated the pain... The Dr.s cannot find anything wrong
with my right leg to explain the pain so Dr. Roeder (the Osteo') started
exploring more of my history of back issues. I have a LONG history of
periodic Sciatica so he wanted to attribute the leg pain to nerve
transmission and ordered a series of lumbar spine x-rays.

Unfortunately, he was right...

Now I have to pray that my insurance will pay for a Chiropractor. But,
I'll pay out of pocket before I'll submit to back surgery. That's a last
resort for me.

OK, you got a plan and that's a good thing.
Maybe the Police Insurance will pay something or the building owners.
To bad your not close to Zen, bet he could get you all the help you
want/need.

Anyway, keep us posted with what's going on don't make a habit of drinking

Indeed. I'm going to try to hit their website tonight at work. They
usually have a list of Doc's that take the insurance. In-house insurance
plans like this are almost like an HMO except I get to pic from their
list rather than being assigned one.

> Maybe the Police Insurance will pay something or the building owners.

Uh uh. No way in hell am I going to sue the police dept. for me being a
klutz. Besides, I signed a serious liability waver when I signed up for
the course.

I am going to advise them however to tape that step.

Heh! I was entitled to a brief nervous breakdown. ;-) If I can get a
snapshot of that x-ray, I'll post it. Nobody needs a radiologist to
interpret THAT one!

Waiver or no waiver, I suspect a lawyer could simply "request" - not
sue - for reasonable assistance with medical fees.

You're generous, of course, and who wants to put any kind of pressure
on the police. Duh. There's a no-brainer.

"Let's see, who can I p!ss off today? Oh, I KNOW! The cops!"

No.

Your insurance doesn't cover chiro?

I'm grateful that the school district's does. My deductible jumped
form ten to twenty bucks, but that's cheap for the relief I believe I
get that's directly associated with irregular adjustments.

My brother had back surgery performed, however nothing that I'd
characterize as "major" - he had a disk sucked out is how I believe he
described it.

And, yes, if you have inexplicable pain in your leg then I'd say
that's directly related to injuring your back. I'm no doc or chiro, of
course, but I do know that my neck was killing me with pain radiating
out to my shoulder. I imagine that your pain is originating and
radiating similarly.

The chiro fixed my pain with one visit.

Wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Om.

Thanks. I had scoliosis back when I was in high school, diagnosed at
age 14. For nearly two years, I got chiropractic therapy and the last
x-ray they took showed a perfectly straight spine.

I just need to find a reliable one.

Looks like insurance will pay 70 to 80% of it depending on whether or
not I can find a close enough Chiro that is one of their providers. I
don't want to have to drive 50 miles each visit. They generally start
you out at 2 to 3 times per week.

Should be. I talked to a Dr. Stamp this morning that was recommended by
an ER doc I've known for over 20 years and really trust.

Funny that. He (the ER doc) met me in the hallway a week or so ago and
asked me if everything was okay. This dude is so good, he reads body
language like a book. I told him yes but he looked at me fish-eyed. <g>
I tried not to limp.

I called them this morning and set up an appt. for tomorrow morning for
a consult. I'm good with the Radiology tech that took the original
films so have actual copies of the x-rays and snitched a copy of the
radiology report from the hospital computer.

Working there had to have it's perks and I DO have a right to stuff I've
jolly well paid for!

So, I'm all set and will hopefully have something positive to report
shortly. In the meantime, for your amusement, here is the lower lumbar
x-ray. Shitty pic, I'll try to get a better one when it's hanging on the
light box tomorrow:

http://i38.tinypic.com/oqaosy.jpg

I'm most worried about the vertebrae that appears to be slipped.

Funny, I'm not having _any_ back pain right now. Just right leg.

I use Firefox on Windows, but on the Mac I like Camino better. It's
based on the same Mozilla code, but written to act more like an OS X

Are you using Tiger or Leopard?
I'd have lost too much software as newer versions of OS X do not have
9.0 emulator so I'm still running an older version.

I like Firefox. :-) It's been very reliable.

Sometimes software upgrades aren't. <g>

That's why I came home Friday after they were taken and got drunk. ;-)
Once I got over my brief nervous breakdown, I'm making plans to deal
with it.

Well, part of the leg pain is Tendonosis in the hip, so that's
contributing too in a different way. I need to find a way to go swimming
regularly. That's what the Ortho' recommended for that issue.

I believe him that the lower leg pain could be attributed to nerve
transmission.

That's why I've got that chiro' appt. in the morning. They fixed it once
before...

Back surgery is out except as a absolute last resort.

I'm running 10.4.11. I think that's Tiger, but I've lost track of
which kitty is which.

In yer dreams... ;-)

The gun was in the car. Part of the student agreement was to remain
unarmed during any class activities.

Probably correct. Leopard is the most recent.
I've got a copy of tiger kicking around here somewhere. Installed it in
dad's computer, just not mine. Like I said, it has no Emu-9. That kinda
ticked me off.

There is some Microsoft stuff that stopped upgrading after 9 that I need
to use from time to time. It won't work on the newer two OS X's.

You might want to check out these guys and see if they have a local machine
available. I have witnessed a miracle or two with these things. But they
only work on certain types of injuries. I have no idea if this type of
therapy would be effective for you.

But check it out anyway.

He was a bit dubious, but will try. Part of it is my age. Last time I
was 14.

Part of the problem also seems to be the degenerated disks. The last two
disks in the lower lumbar spine are completely (visibly anyway) gone.
It's bone on bone and spurs are developing.

<sigh>

I'm too young for this. I'm lucky I'm not having major back pain.
Probably the weight lifting/torso strength is preventing real nerve
compression. Resistance exercise has it's practical applications. <g>

They did some therapy this morning and I have a followup on Tuesday. I
know this'll take some time. No miracles, just time...

In the meantime, my pressure cooker gets a good workout cooking a high
collagen diet. Fortunately, I LIKE chicken feet! ;-d

Thanks Curt. :-)
You are a good person.

Looks interesting, thanks!
I also totally forgot to ask the doc this morning about Inversion tables.

They are not expensive.

One thing EVERYONE has suggested so far is swimming. The Y in the same
town is reasonable and they open early. Just gotta dig out my silicon
fins. They are large and heavy and work the legs harder than free
swimming.

I'd rather swim against the current in the local river, but that's too
dangerous to do alone. I need someone willing to watch or do it with me.

I can kick all day and I don't go anywhere. I need fins to work the legs at
all.

Two other things that might help would be prolotherapy and far infrared
heat.

Lots of info on the web about them.

Thanks for that! You and my favorite Naturopath guru (called him on the
phone) have now suggested Prolotherapy. I'm taking a look at it.

I agree about the fins. I don't swim near enough even tho' I own scuba
gear. Th
