Default How much mimimum should I spend to get a cardio machcine

I don't need bells and whistle. I have a gym mebership. After I get a
bench and free weights, I'll do strength trainging at home and go to
gym to use ellipitcal (precor). I might try Cybex in the future.

So basically, I need something decent to use to warm up for weight
ligfting session as well as for cardio if I can't make it to the gym.

Space is an issue as well; I'll be moving to an apartment. I'll keep
only one sofa and a chair in my livign room +coffee table + 1 or 2 end
tables.

Any recommendation what to get?

1. Internet search on 5BX or 10BX plan - free.

2. Skipping rope.

Oh. And if your apartment has stairs that would about be all required.

I think you should spend a minimum of $0 and a maximum of $0.

If you don't need bells and whistles, and you already have a gym
membership then I would suggest leaving out the bench entirely and
just getting a set of adjustable dumbbells.

You really only need the bench for bench presses and those can easily
be replaced with pushups. As an added bonus you are less likely to
hurt your shoulder with pushups. If you can't do a pushup just touch
your knees to the ground and do partials. If you need more resistance
work up to one armed pushups.

The dumbbells will allow you to do rows, overhead presses, goblet
squats, lunges, and any number of serious strength movements that
require external weight. Dumbbells are also easy to store.

Take Hobbes suggestion and run stairs or skip rope.

I personally think that weight lifting benches are very attractive as
furniture .

Start with dumbbells and a good jump rope.

Very funny..not. The idea is that I'd get really busy - I have a
stategic plan to get a job that should stress me out so much that all
I'd have time to do is eat, sleep and work, at least for the first 2-3
years and I need to make sure I don't skip on ezericisng - and hence
home equipment are a must. I'd be in SF Bay Area - let's say it's a
dream to get otu fot here and move there - where IT jobs are and I
doubt that I'd have a place with stairs insid emya partment.

I don't like ropes. I am not a 13 year old anymore

Either are the pro boxers who jump rope.

Here's my suggestion: http://www.fastexercise.com/

Jason Earl and I highly recommend it.

What do you do? I used to work in the Milpitas, Walnut Creek, and Berkley.

I can start out that way ...

Wouldn't a bench be good to have to do rows?

I am not going to run the stairs in apartment building. I don't even
go for a walk in my beighborhood so that no one would know that I live
here. I am scared ...from too much local news of rape and stuff.

And I hate jumping rope. I have a nasal condition (not from allergy)
and that gets internal equilibrium (presure in era, nose) imblanced
easily and I am not comfortable with jumping movement.

I'll start with dumbell (but want to get into barbell). Can you not
think of anything for cardio that's not expensive? I won't rush and
buy but I want to know..about those.

Wasn't trying to be funny. Try doing a set of 500 bodyweight full
squats. Then tell me why you need a machine to look after your cardio.

I keep a couple of dumbbells and a couple of kettlebells (adjustable
handles, Steve) at my home and a pull-up bar I can use in the doorway.
That's all. I compete at weightlifting and have been a competitive
powerlifter. I like to kayak in the summer, but needing anything fancy
for cardio - you don't.

If you have no motivation or determination the machine won't supply it
for you.

Free.

http://www.cbass.com/Furey.htm

(You can do regular squats instead of hindu, knee push-ups and backbends
- the point is bodyweight makes an excellent training tool).

What did you do there? IT? Engineering? Biotech?

I just got to know SF Bay Area well enoguh that now I feel comfortable
to move there + my health is back to normal (had a surgery (which may
not have been necessry) but at the same time was diagnosed with a
nasal condition which were already taking a toll on me because of the
climate and industrial poluttion where I was living)

You are no help. How about a stair master or something like that so
that I can watch some news on TV too not that the US media gives any
news anyway? Or I'll watch some dumb TV sitcoms.

I have been using weight machines at the gym and body weight would be
boring.
Beside, I need to get strong *seriously* now that I sit a lot unlike
in Chemistry where I was on my feet all day long.

Beside, can I spend some money ...please?

How about TV swings? If you get really good at those, you could
want to progress to some Russian heavy duty tactical TVs.

I always thought chemistry would be a fun career.

I worked as a Sr. UNIX/Network web systems administrator for a few
startups and taught advanced UNIX at Silicon Valley College as well
as performed their campus-wide network administration duties. I have since
returned to education and am now studying computer science at UC Davis.

Where were you living? The climate in the bay area is nice. If you are
looking for exercise equipment in the bay area you can't beat craigslist.
Many people purchase expensive equipment during short stints of motivation
and end up selling them for pennies on the dollar after they collect dust
for a year or so. A lot of people even give their old weightlifting
equipment away because the area is so saturated with available used
equipment.

Those are done with a bench because it's usually the first thing that
comes to hand in a gym. You can use anything about that height.

In fact, i do (or did) them leaning on the dumbbell rack; the benches were
oversubscribed, but there was always a free end of the rack to lean on. I
did them with both feet planted on the floor, rather than with one leg
kneeling, with my supporting arm out in front of me, lifting the weight
sort of in the middle of the triangle formed by my feet and arm (not quite
- to one side; i realise this description is hopeless).

So what i'm saying is that you can use a stool or something. Absolutely no
problem.

Why not?

Do you actually live in a terrible area, or have you just fallen victim to
the hysterical atmosphere of fear which pervades western society? The
world is probably a lot less dangerous than you think.

Pushbike and a static trainer, then. Or just do 'body pump' style fast,
low-weight (possibly bodyweight) lifting.

Really? Your strategic life plan sounds pretty adolescent.

Not fun when the industry doesn't care neough to keep the ait clean

So you already got the experience and now studying. I am the
opposite ..because I was a furriner and there was no other way to
maintian visa and stuff...

I am 2 hr away from Bay Area and about 35 mins from Davis. Can you
solve the puzzle w/o saying out loud?

I won't do (well) that. Mine is a requirement. After I left school
the first time around, it was hard for me to do *any* exercise due to
commute and at the second school, the gym was being remodelled (but I
was too sick anyway).

By the time I reached there, someone would have gotten it. I am going
to SF tomorrow thoguh. So I'l look on craigslist and see what I can
find over there.

BTW,

I am gathering exercises using dumbell (and some barbell) for all
muscle groups. May be I won't get a bench; you got me worried about
the space. I must move to Bay Area ..even if it is for a few years. I
want to get into to IT area in Pharma industry to combine w/
Chemistry...

The latter but I am not taking any chances, not after I saw a news
piece where a female lawyer was raped by her upstairs neighbor (who
knocked on her door for salt) and shot and left to die but she
managed to reac the phone, and survived.

I don't want to my quadricep big. Squat would do that, wouldn't it?

Whatever.

You don't have my experience espeically about life. You didn't cross
the pacific and struggled in a new country in a new culture... and
alone.

You don't live my life, I live my life.

Champion CX100 spin bike, Costco, $550. Makes no noise and is almost like

There are too many choices. A jump rope really _is_ a good choice.
Another choice, if you have a bicycle, is an indoor trainer, basically
something that attaches to your bicycle and allows you to ride it in
place. You can use a bike you have, that fits you, that you like,
etc., and a few hundred dollars gets you a good one. You're worried
about your quads getting big doing bodyweight squats? Hah, you should
be so fortunate. Bodyweight exercises can build excellent strength and
conditioning.
