Default How to split workout?

Currently I have a brief 2 set, 40 minutes every four-days
routine. It's split into two, ie every two days I do two sets of half
my exercises in twenty minutes.

The alternative, of course, would be to do one set of all my exercises
every two days. Is this likely to be more effective? I'm a 46-year-old
male looking for general strength.

Yes.

Yes, but getting rid of some exercises and concentrating on basics
would possibly work even better. Try supersetting what's possible (I
mean doing two exercises back to back).
