| | | I want to look like James Bond I am a beginner, 30, 180 lbs 6 foot 1. I essentially get little
exercise. I want my body to look like Bond in the movie Casino Royal.
He is not huge but is muscular and has good definition. That is my
goal and I am going to try to get as in shape as that as possible.
Is this doable?
What kind of body fat would you say he have in the movie? If I am not
as cut as him, it is ok as long as I have decent definition.
What kind of workout do I need to do? How much should I be able to
bench or squat? To get like that can I do cardio and weights at the
same time?
can I look like that with just push ups, pull ups, and such exercises?
I'd prefer to do it that way if possible. |

You know, it used to be
"I want to look like Brad Pitt in 'Fight Club.'"
Before that, it was:
"I want to look like Rocky."

I can only imagine what it must be like to look like him. I could

Rocky, 1976.
Let's drop back to:
"I want to look like Steve Reeves in 'Hercules.'"
Hercules, 1958.
Or a really big jump to:
"I want to look like Eugen Sandow in 'the 1893 World's Columbian

Okay, not a movie, but there's the date and the location (courtesy of

Freides is right. It is as it ever shall be.

And, yeah, unfortunately, I really DO look like /John Williams/ in real

Not in your gym pics. However, you do look a bit dweeb-like in your
NIEHS pic, sitting in front of your computers, although it doesn't
look they gave you much of an opportunity to pose. ("Hey, Dmitri,
look over here!") I do like the cat calendar, though. |

Go to a gym at least three times a week. Go through your exercises
with a brisk tempo; around a minute of rest between exercises. With
three times a week you'll do best progress with full body workout.
Bench press, Dumbbell row, Squat, Shoulder Press, Biceps supersetted
with triceps work.
If you go to a gym four times a week do push/pull split.
A: Bench, Squat, Shoulder press, Triceps push-down
B: Barbell row, Pull-up, Shrug, Barbell curl.
With 5 days a week and up do push/pull/legs split.
Do as many sets of 8 per exercise as you have time and gas. Try to be
done with your workout within an hour and try to beat time. Once you
are able to finish everything you planned within 45min, increase
weights.

This will give you some idea, note that there are plenty of people that can
lift but don't look like James Bond. What you end up looking like will
depend on your genetics and how much you put into it.

A moderate diet and a moderate amount of exercise, no small things to do
for many people who eat far too much and exercise far too little, will
make you moderately fit and healthy, and that is sufficient for most
people most of the time. Most men can get to somewhere around 15% this
way. The important point to know is: To get below this good, reasonably
achievable level of bodyfat requires a great deal more discipline and
work, and many people find it very frustrating - expect this is you are
attempting to really make yourself look like a movie star. They work
very hard at it and often have someone else to make all the diet and
exercise decisions for them.
Just my opinion.

Are you a novice or are you pulling the proverbial chain here?
Welcome to planet Earth. Here you will find skinny people, fat people,
in between skinny and fat people, muscular people, muscular people with
some fat, skinny people who possess muscular calves, muscular people
with absolutely no calves to speak of, and every other permutation of
bodyparts and body fat percentages.
It is, iow, highly individual. You may be able to achieve 12% body fat
with ease or, otoh, you may never achieve that percentage. You won't
know, however, unless you try. Best of luck in the effort. Please post
a report in 12 to 16 weeks or, hey, less depending on your diet, your
body's reaction to said hypothetical diet, your somethingsomething and
your this 'n that.
Here are two items:
1) http://theabsdiet.com/
2) Seek out _The New High Intensity Training_ by Ellington Darden and
read its chapter 25: "Phase 1, Getting Lean: a 2-week quick start".
Again, best of luck, and enjoy your stay on terra firma.

Do you think you already have enough muscle mass to look like him? If
not you will need to hit weights too.
The body fat depends partially on what you are now. If you are less
than 18% already it shouldn't be too hard with exercise and diet.
Like Steve says he probably had someone telling him how to train and
what to eat. Here is some information on taking bodyfat
measurements: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson98.htm
You can buy skin calipers for as little as $20.
You should probably ask yourself this question though. If you saw him
standing near a trailer drinking a beer, would you still think he
looked good? Movies are pretty good at making someone look better
than they are in real life. |

I haven't seen the movie or the pics. In any case, I wouldn't hazard a guess
as to how much someone can squat by a picture. The link I supplied will give
you a general idea of what men at different levels of training can lift. You
can probably see how far you are from your goal by looking in the mirror. |

Clueless is not necessarily a bad thing. Your questions, "So is 12%
body fat hard to achieve? would it mean a strict diet?" or the answers
at least are relative. That is, there's no one right answer, imo. What
works for you may not work for someone else.
Still, here are those two items again:

2) Seek out _The New High Intensity Training_ by Ellington Darden and
read its chapter 25: "Phase 1, Getting Lean: a 2-week quick start".
Or check out your local public library. I would hope they have at least
on basic bodybuilding book with a few pages on weight training, diet,
and cardio as they relate to fat loss.
Best of luck.

Yes, although the bright orange all over their website as well as the

I don't know how much he can squat, but I'll wager he trained squats.
The build he's got looks more like a grappler than a pretty boy sort of
build.

Why only recently my chum John Williams posted a .jpeg of myself,
