I remember the day when my great-uncle was dying. He gathered our
vigorous-hair family around and talked in a breaking voice. First he
addressed my sister:
"Do you remember the day you were beaten and half-killed on the strit
ven you spend hol mans in a gospital' ?" (his English wasn't very
good).
"Yes", she said, "how could I forget something that
horrible?"
"Do you forgive me? - because it was me who arranged that", he
said in a voice full of self-condemnation.
"Duh! my beloved great-uncle", she replied ("Duh" means an affirmative
"Yes" in Russian).
"Do you remember you were denied admission into a prestigious math
department even though you spoke Russian with no giveaway accent, then
dyed blonde, and straightened your hair for the entrance exams - but
somehow they found out an old photo of you with your head full of
thick, black, and vigorous curly hair, like Steve F.?", he asked me.
"Yes", I replied, while a terrible anticipation started to crawl in.
"That was me who sent them the photo - will you forgive your
great-uncle?"
"Of course!" I replied (I have a big forgiving heart, although I have
a few problems like sharing food or giving money).
"Thank you my beloved family! I have only one last wish - I want to be
punished for my terrible sins. When I die, ramit that old cactus on
the window up my lily-white derriere", he said with his last breath.
Just as we finished, a police squad broke into the room on an
anonymous tip which said that we are torturing the old man... My sis
and me still have that hammer and sickle tattoos on the "backs".
