The point of the wall, I believe, is to control some of that. It makes
it into essentially a weighted hindu squat, torso almost upright. I do
_not_ recommend anyone try it the way you did for the reasons you
mention. I only do mine right in front of a wall.
If you're willing to try them in front of a wall, I'll work on them for
a while that way after my meet's over in another week. I think I can
fairly quickly get up to a 50 lbs. that way but 70 will likely take a
while.
