Default Medical update

Yesterday, i went to the hospital, AGAIN, to see if they can "fix" this
chronique fatique problem i have. I mean, its starting to get REALLY bad. It
more or less start to fuck everything up. And i really cant have that.

This time, i went to see a neurologist, who is also specialized in typical
sleep/wake problems.

At first his assistant examined me, just the usual stuff a neurologist does.
Lots of questions too. Kinda standard. After i was examined, the assistant
went to the doctor himself. After 5 minutes or so, he came in, and asked as
few weird questions.

He asked me if i ever woke up in a state where the mind is awake and the
body is not. IOW, you want to move but you cant.

?!?!?!

As a matter of fact, i have this ever since i was a child. I still have it
sometimes. Scary, but i am more or less used to it.

Just like i am used to the fact that i have dreams within a dream. I had a
triple once, which was quite scary...

Another question was that if i nap during the day, do i slide into a dream
immediately. Yes again.

He also asked if i had dreams where i was aware that i am dreaming. Yes
again.

And a few other questions related to my dreamscape. All yes.

?!?!?!

But what the hell did it have to with me being tired all the time ?!?!?!

The doc told me that the signs i have, could be related to a form of
narcolepsy, and that that form could also trigger OSAS, which was diagnosed
in 2004.

April 5, i am going to the hospital a few days. They are going to hook me up
to a computer again, and see whats going on inside my brain when i sleep.

I am slowly morphing into David Patrick Kelly. But i am better than he ever
was. Watch out, guys!

The good news is that if i actually have this form of narcolepsy, there are
medications, specific ones for during the day, and during the night.

And maybe i can actually solve this **FUCKING** PROBLEM for once and for
all!

;-)

There you have it. You've answered your own question. I remember an
episode of Kolchak with a guy who was committing murders, psychically/
spiritually/mentally(?) while in a deep sleep. They had him being
monitored at a sleep clinic, but his spirit or mental powers was
skipping around town offing people.

You don't, by any chance, ride around town on your bike with an AK47,
do you? S

There's a sleep clinic sign posted at then entrance to the medical
center where I attend PT. So far, I haven't heard any hideous
screaming or any other cause for alarm.

Seriously, wishing you the best result and some good rest, Pete.

No, but i survived being shot with one. But then again, i survived plane
crashes and direct nucleur hits.

Sometimes i squat, on the sidewalk, wearing underwear, with 200 kilo, for
high reps.
The people who walk by, just... walk by.

Scary, isnt it?
Whats even more scary is that the last 2 hours, i googled some stuff up. I
dont have all the signs, but most of them.

Like this typical writing problem. I usually start out with clear letters,
but at the end you can hardly read it.
And some other things start to make sense.

Hope so. Would be terrible if they give me falso hope, again.

If they diagnose me properly this time, and find a way to cure it, i still
feel like i have lost 15 years of my life.
Thas a lotta years. I did start to complain about this problem 15 years ago.

But they didnt take me seriously. Nice. Real nice.
The way i feel at this moment, is that i havent slept at all for 2 months or
so. I just type these sentences on automatic pilot. I do everything on
automatic pilot.

They better not dissapoint me this time. I can take alot but...
But i try to stay positive.

Best of luck Pete! :-)

My doc Dx'd me with mild positional narcolepsy that causes me to want to
snooze off if I sit in one position too long without moving... and that
mainly affects me on the freeway.

It's why I'm on Adderall. I don't have ADD... It works if I time it like
I'm supposed to.

It also happens sometimes if I have the time to read at work (which is
NOT during the flu' season!). I can lay my head down on a desk and
snooze off instantly, and DREAM right away even with just a 5 minute nap.

Hope he can help you!

Pete are you sure you just don't need more fiber in your diet? Most
everything you say about your health suggests that. Try these things
on some chosen day: eat 1/2 a cantaloupe, do some weighted squats,
take a warm bath. Either that day or the next you should have a good
crap. See how you feel after and if you sleep a little better.

Thats exactly what happens to me in the afternoon. Around 3-5pm, i start to
get sleepy, and slight into a dream. I wake up after a few minutes,
dissoriented, scared, and with an elevated heart beat. Which make me feel
more tired.

Its a lose/lose situation.

Would be nice.

I am scheduled for april 5, and the next time i see him is may 8.
Which from my point of view is very long, since things are getting worse
each week.

It does?

I really dont know. I am tired for many many years now. I worked 60 hours a
week when i was tired. My stomach problems are quite recent, so i really
dont know.

I will try anything.
I still take MetaMucil. Thats fiber, isnt it? Can the body tell the
difference between that and more vegetables?

I will do anything for a good night sleep. Well, almost anything... ;-O

I never wake up scared, just a bit drowsy. Goes away when I get up and
move around. Changing positions in the truck when I'm driving also helps
drive off the snoozies if I have not taken my adderal.

Do you crave carbs when you wake up perchance?
Have you been checked for hypoglycemia?

My issue does not involve any set times... Yours might be related to
post-lunch?

Just a thought.

A 4 hour glucose tolerance test could Dx that. Docs rarely use
the 4 hour one anymore, but I've read that that is the best way to rule
out that problem.

Do you sleep at night, at all?
How long? Be sure to share that info. with your doc. :-)
Have you been checked for sleep apnea?

Again, good luck!

I have not been following this but i assume you were checked out for
sleep apnea?

Dreaming is the kind of thing your body "builds up" a need for so if
you're consistently denied dreaming you'll start doing so as soon as
possible.

Anyway, keep us updated and good luck!

Indeed...

I think that is why one of the more notable side effects of Melatonin
for Insomnia is lots of weird dreams. Not nightmares per se', just weird
stuff.

And it's a side effect that goes away after a bit of time if it work for
you.

Good luck with this. There is NOTHING worse than not being able to sleep. My
legal problems with the pain meds all stemmed from me having Restless Leg
Syndrome. Not sleeping well will literally drive you nuts. :-)

It can certainly get confusing with general symptoms like this. I
just think doctors try to make things too complex with their
diagnosis. They diagnosis the illness and medicate it. Rather than
find the cause and a solution to deal with it.

>> Most everything you say about your health suggests that.

>
>It does?

Well you where saying before you doctor recommended more carbs. Most
people don't get nearly enough fiber as it is. If you start
eliminating carbs you may be getting very little. You can just add up
a typical day and see for yourself. Lack of fiber can cause
sluggishness, digestive problems, and tiredness. And those things can
have some effect on dream patterns. If you are exercising and eating
good foods it may not be as bad. But I think stuff like this just
depends on the person too.

>I really dont know. I am tired for many many years now. I worked 60 hours a
>week when i was tired. My stomach problems are quite recent, so i really

There are many things can make a person tired. I found about sugar
problems when I was younger which was making me tired all the time.
My sister inlaw has an iron deficiency which I guess if your women
lets you stay home instead of work. And yeah even depression or
stress can make a person tired. I doubt you have an iron deficiency
if you are eating any red meat. Women are more susceptible to that
anyway. Blood sugar is more related to someone who binges on sweats.

So I guess looking at what you describe I would expect stress to be a
factor. You could start by making sure you are getting enough
vitamins. Stress can deplete them and if you are not getting enough
fruits and vegetables you could be lacking. You can also try to do
things to relieve stress. Baths and massages can feel pretty good.
So can just getting out and doing some stuff for yourself.

Well according a book I am reading they are not the same. And I
tended to feel bloated when I tried fiber supplements. Take a look at
your overall diet for a day and see what you are getting first. There
are high fiber cereals and even beans can be a good source. It
doesn't have to all come from fruit and vegetables. And not all
fruits and vegetables are good on fiber anyway.

If it is the same time each day it doesn't seem like it would be
narcolepsy. I think they can fall asleep almost any time.

I googled that one. They dont have that one here.

> Do you crave carbs when you wake up perchance?

No, but i am very thirsty. And my first choice is usually a sweet fruit
juice.

> Have you been checked for hypoglycemia?

A long time ago, not recent. But they will do that also on April 5, when i
attend the hospital.

> My issue does not involve any set times... Yours might be related to

Not really, but i know what you mean. I usually have that after a huge plate
of spaghetti.

What i experience in the afternoon is more related to my absence of Nrem or
phase 4, or delta sleep.

I think they will do that.

> Do you sleep at night, at all?

Well, last night i slept from 1 to 8am. I woke up at aprox. 5, 6 and 7am,
after which i have a hard to get to sleep again. It feels like my brain is
going overtime. This may sound weird, but i thoughts in the early morning
that feel as if they are not mine. I think i wake up from a dream and the
brain is still going. This dissorients me and scares me. It takes at least
10-15 minutes to get the heart rate normal.

> How long?

Anything from 6-9 hours, which seems normal. But mostly Rem. No Nrem. No
deep sleep.
With 10-20 dreams. I wake up exhausted. Took a massive cup of coffee. Which
doesnt work as it did in the past.

> Be sure to share that info. with your doc. :-)

Sure. And they hook me up anyway. I believe they will let me sleep during
the day, with intervals. I believe they want to see what goes on in my brain
when i fall asleep, and the 2 hours after. They repeat that 3-4 times.

> Have you been checked for sleep apnea?

Yes. 3 times. First time i had a 26 AHI index. Which is scary, since my
oxygen dropped to 78%.

They also confirmed that my sleeping pattern was completely fragmented. No
deep sleep whatsoever.
The doctor i saw last time said that this could be related to a form of
narcolepsy.

Well, i have been googling a few days now, and some people seem to lack a
certain protein in the brain.

Hypocretin, i believe.

Yes. But that was to fix my alleged weight problem. Less protein, more
carbs.

I really dont know.
I will make a few adustments in my diet. I consume mostly healthy foods at
home.

I never eat candy or other sugary things. I will try to add some more fiber.

I will give it a try. I dont have anything to lose.

This is what i mean. Does a depression cause a weird sleeping pattern and
makes you tired?

Or does a fucked sleeping pattern cause depression? And cause stress bacause
you feel tired? And so on. What causes what?

No sweats.

I tried that. The problem is, even when relaxed, the brain goes overtime in
my sleep.

Well, i will give it a try. See how that goes.

Several times.

They diagosed me with OSAS in 2004. And 2 tests in 2005 confirmed it.

I have 10-20 dreams each night. I am not sure if i need them, but i sure as
hell dont want them.
I feel as if i was busy all night, instead of resting.

I will. Thanks.

I used to laugh about sleep deprevation as a means of torture.

So you get sleepy, big deal. Right?

Well, i know better now. Besides going crazy, it can also give you anxiety.

Are you still taking a cocktail of drugs, steroids etc? That might be
affecting your sleep
If you get very thirsty and pee a lot check your blood sugar as it is a
symptom of diabetes

So simply don't get your hopes *too* high. Just hope that a problem
from life threatening (which it is, right now) will become at least
manageable. It's quite a difference. Possibly between slightly sucky
life and no life at all. Slightly sucky life is what we all live
anyway. ;-)

What is OSAS? I've only heard of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), which I
have. I also had a lot of the symptoms you describe before starting CPAP
therapy.

Like if you're waking up from OSA instead of hitting REM.

Early REM is also a sign of clinical depression, just as a side note.

Cheers,

Sounds like the doc is doing a thorough job then.

Once again, best of luck.

Sleep disorders suck!

Yeap. Big time.

Yeap, but you can get manic too, for a short time at least.

Sure. Isn't it beautifully arranged?

Do you ask what starts this cycle? It depends. You can get depressed
because your most cherished cat shot himself with your most cherished
gun, and things can escalate from there. Or you can be deprived of
sleep and start from this point too. Life is about choices, so it's up
to you. ;-)
