| | | ? for the mild drinkers in MFW I was curious if the milk drinkers here have tried Organic Milk. I decided
to give it a try a while back just for the hell of it and realized that it
tastes MUCH better than any other type of mild I have tried. Has anyone else
noticed this?

This is a very challenging topic Rob, and so much more interesting
than the plethora of other crap you have started churning out on a
daily basis.
Here is my opinion which will no doubt get the sober alcoholics among
us (those who don't drink just one day at a time) sucking their teeth
in disapproval.
I can't with hand on heart claim to be a "mild drinker", as I tend to
approach the art of drinking with a great deal of enthusiasm. This
tends to manifest itself in regular bouts of what is known as binge
drinking.
These regular bouts of binge drinking tend to take place at the end of
the working week and other holidays and breaks from work, when I am
known to be "having a great weekend".
I suggest a "mild drinker" is a man who takes no more than 4 units of
alcohol per day. I tend to not drink from Monday to Friday, but use
the total allocation of safe daily units for a full week, which works
out at 28 units, and spread them over the two days of the weekend.
However, I have been known on occasions to become even more
enthusiastic if I am having a particularly "great weekend"!!
This may be why on my return to work that I always say: "Ugh! It's
Monday!
HTH!

We switched to organic milk about a year ago. The kids kept coming back
from one or two of their friend's houses and saying that the milk tasted
better than what we had, and it always turned out that the other house
bought organic milk. It used to be tough to get, e.g., you could get it
in the pricery grocery store but not the regular one, but now it's just
about everywhere. We usually go with 1% or 2%.
Also have added several kinds of yogurt and kefir to the diet lately -
turns out both boys like a strawberry flavored low-fat kefir from Trader
Joe's - damned tasty, some added sweetner, but still better for the kids
than soda. Gotta love Trader Joe's - enough to feel sorry for folks who
don't have one nearby.

I was on an organic milk kick a few years back. I agree it tastes *much*
better. I also noticed, at least for the brand I was drinking (I can't
remember the name right now) dried milk was the 2nd ingredient -- Milk,
nonfat dried milk, vitamins A & D. So maybe check if yours is like this
too...
I wish it wasn't so damn expensive, otherwise I'd drink it all the time. |

I don't drink that much milk these days, so the price doesn't bother me. I
used to go through a gallon or two of whole milk/day back when I was trying
to gain weight in college etc. It would have added up back then! :-)

Another nod to genetics, imo, as I went through a gallon of milk a day
as a teenager with nowhere near the results that 'bert was blessed
with. Otoh, I've got two kidneys. OtOoh, he doesn't have a pleomorphic
whateveritis to contend with. OtOooh, hmmm. Well, maybe the kidneys
thing is all I've got over 'bert. But, hey, that's a big one. The pleo
is basically a glorified zit, imo. Let's see, Google group MFW search

I've been on organic so long that regular milk now tastes to me like
metallic cardboard (best I can do...sorry).
Milk is one of the items where that "organic" tag makes a very
noticeable difference in taste. With organic produce I find that the
difference is mostly psychological (I "feel" better about fewer
pesticides and thus the eating "experience" is qualitatively
"better"). That applies to organic wine too...but, um, moreso.

It gets the 'organic' tag not just because its pesticide free but also
because its rBGH (recumbant bovine growth hormone)free. Score one for
the consumer against Monsanto that all organic milk cartons can say
they have none in it. For about .50 more per quart, its worth it. http://www.foodrevolution.org/askjohn/22.htm http://www.stonyfield.com/OurProducts/WeOpposerBGH.cfm

Yea, I agree with that. Either metallic cardboard or chewed-up Tylenol.
Unfortunately one can get used to regular milk when finances are low...

To my toungue, milk is the *only* thing that the "organicness" makes a
difference. I was a huge organic nut about 10 years ago, but truthfully, I
could never really taste the difference either, besides milk products.
Do they make organic box wine? I've got a cheap date coming up soon!

Turn it up a bit!
Incedentally and off topic, I think being a dietary-vegan was the most
detrimental thing I've ever done to my health. Way worse than the drugs I
did in high school, or even long-term smoking. I don't see how people can
sustain their health by being vegan without cheating. |

Can't say I noticed a difference, but i really dont drink much milk these
days. I do notice a big difference in things like eggs and meat however,
though that may not be a function of them being organic per se, but other
factors (feed, freshness, etc). When given a choice, I will generally buy
organic, but I dont sweat it if it's not.

I have never tried organic red meat. When I want a good filet, I'll go and
buy a prime filet. I can get a good choice filet for about $7.00/lb. Prime
is about $30.00/lb, but there is a BIG taste difference! :-) It is like
comparing going to an Outback for a filet vs Mortens.
