Default OT: freecycle.org

We just discovered freecycle.org, thanks to our next-door neighbors.
It's a collection of local groups that try to eliminate putting unused
things out on the curb, e.g., we joined and found someone very happy to
have our box spring and mattress, which we'd used for 10 years but still
had plenty of life left. Some people posted "wanted" notices but most
of it is just stuff that would go into the garbage but others might find
useful. We've seen furniture, books, computer monitors - lots of the
kind of stuff you might see at a garage sale.

Our local group turns out to be a Yahoo Group but each local group
handles itself however it wishes. You just go to
http://www.freecycle.org, put in your location, and it gives you back a
list of what it thinks is close to you.

Our local freecycle group here in Australia uses yahoo as well. We've
made good use of it both for giving and receiving.

I belong to two of my local ones. It's been great. :-)
I've been able to give a lot of stuff away, some of which was "garbage"
to me. I've got a waiting list for those 25lb. scoopable cat litter
buckets for instance... I've used some of them for storage myself, but
I can only use so many. I save and give away egg cartons too. I no
longer have my own poultry but those that do really value used cartons.
