| | | protein before or during a workuot better then after a workout? I know the general advice is to have a high protein food right after a
workout but wouldn't it actually be better to have it before or during
the workout since it takes the body a little while to digest? Since it
takes the body a while to digest if you eat it right before you work out
won't it be more available then if you ate it after working out? |

No, that's wrong.
Calm down, John, calm down! I was about to say: that's wrong because
digestion of the right kind of high-protein food, ie whey, is actually
very quick, so you don't need to give it a head start.
Nonetheless, eating protein before a workout *is* a good idea, because
having amino acids in your blood while lifting is a good thing - it
apparently reduces muscle protein breakdown, and promotes production of
new stuff.
Personally, i find protein makes me sleepy, and that's really unhelpful
while lifting, so i drink my milk afterwards. YMMV.

One other matter: the analysis you gave applies to protein PLUS
CARBOHYDRATES. Consume something sugary that will supply immediate
glucose. Sucrose (table sugar) is OK; something even higher in
glucose (i.e., more than 50%) is even better. Avoid stuff that's
sweetened with apple or pear juice or HFCS 90 (the type of high
fructose corn syrup used in instant drink mixes). |

Oh, please does he have to? The list of things about which Poop Shute is

It would be easier to list things he does know something about.

If you eat pre, during and post-workout more calories than you burn by
exercising (which is very easy), you may easily gain fat this way.

Then eat real food not table sugar. Just about anything is going to
bring up your blood sugar level. Try eating fruit which is nature's
sugar. It has other healthy benefits and you are not going to fuck up
your sugar levels.
In John's case he was referring to the age old assumption that sugar
equals energy. If taken in high doses it can mess with your insulin
levels and have the opposite effect. Some people are more susceptible
to this then others. And the more often you do it the more likely it
is to be a problem. Basically your body can crank out too much
insulin to bring down the overdose of blood sugar. That can end up
making you tired again. It can also lead to hypoglycemia and diabetes
later on in life. |

I think that is the key. Fruit or things like raisins have some benefit
beyond simply replacing glycogen. But if you do have a sweet tooth
having a handful of smarties after a strenuous workout isn't going to
make you fat.
As for the next paragraph - I'll let John handle his own case, but he is
pretty aware of hormonal responses to diet.

You have a high-school-health-class understanding of nutrition.
You're the one with the archaic assumption that "sugar is bad." So
maybe even a dumbass like you can learn something while I explain this
to others.
First, my comment on carbohydrate consumption referred solely to
simple sugars at or near the time of resistance training. The
purpose: insulin release. Insulin plus certain amino acids (leucine
in particular) prompt mTOR signaling of muscle protein synthesis. The
underlying cellular mechanism has been established in multiple recent
studies, and the basic effect has been well recognized for more than a
decade -- it was being discussed frequently in this newsgroup ten
years ago.
And as to all that icky table sugar ... Some of the foremost
researchers of nutrition related to muscle protein synthesis are Dr.
Kevin Tipton and his associates at the University of Texas - Medical
Branch in Galveston. Their studies have involved the consumption of
amino acids (sometimes in the form of whey or whole milk) and
carbohydrates before, during, and after heavy resistance training. Do
you know what they often used as their carbohydrate component? 30
grams of sucrose. That's right, Sparky -- an ounce of table sugar. A
molecule of glucose bonded to a molecule of fructose by a hydrogen
atom, which breaks down to the individual monosaccharides in the gut,
almost immediately.
My comment about apple and pear juice? Both have a very high fructose
content. Fructose must be converted to glucose in the gut before it
is useful, and in some people, that conversion is slow and causes
gastrointestinal distress. For some reason, that problem does not
occur amongst most people with the fructose fraction of sucrose.
But now comes Shute, who was a high school wrestler and passed his
high school health class. He thinks he knows everything there is to
know about this stuff. If he had come to MFW with the intention of
learning something, he might not be considered such a moron, but he
decided to come here and set himself up as a seasoned expert, not
realizing that the level of discourse in this newsgroup is, and always
has been, well beyond his level of understanding. And rather than
admitting that he's not well versed in the subject matter, he chooses
to regurgitate the same simplistic factoids that he learned in high
school, then insult others when they tell him he's wrong.
As to the physiological analysis above, I can provide cites to medical
and scientific literature for everything I wrote. What have you got,
Shute? |

Fat asses? This spring, you were at 33% body fat. That's clinically
obese. At the beginning of September, you bragged about being down to
22% body fat. Who's the fat ass, Shute?
>I realize John is just an idiot but your a nurse Cohen. You seriously

[a] I didn't talk about "sucking down table sugar every day." I
talked about using it in combination with whey protein only around the
time of resistance training.
[b] See my other post regarding sucrose.

your Food Pyramid concepts, Shute. |

"If you eat more calories than you burn by exercising, you may easily
gain fat."
Yes, Andrzej, even children know that.
Per gram, protein has as many calories as carbohydrates, and fats have
twice as many, so I guess that applies to all macronutrients. However,
the issue was the types of carbohydrates involved.
I won't argue with your answer because it's accurate. Unfortunately,
the answer doesn't really have anything to do with the question. |

ha ha ha ha
Well, I wasn't thinking about a whole meal or anything.
I mainly work out in the evenings after work so what I sometimes do
is split my evening meal into pre and post workout portions or having
something small before working out and then a slightly smaller meal than
usual afterwards. For example, tonight I am gonna have some beef jerky
before I leave work and head to the gym. After the gym I'll have a lean
roast beef sandwich. |

TheGist wrote:

the only thing i would worry about is making yourself sick. beef jerky
always pulls way too much water into my intestine to dilute all the
salt. since jerky-ed beef is complicated to digest, you might have
some extra blood flowing to your stomach that would normally be
earmarked for your muscle, but i wouldn't worry too much about that.
the one thing i will say, however, is that even a heavy-calorie liquid
meal takes at least four hours (or more) to empty into your intestine

Indeed. Let's see is anything you are about to write in this post is
correct. So I'll have some hope for you.

Wrong. if either of us were, we would be aware of the cause.

You provide no help for anyone, except as an object of amusement.

Wrong. Don't currently have one.

As part of post workout nutrition, no.

Hospital nutrition is the worst, and is designed by Registered Dieticians,
who are the most ignorant group of "professionals" one could possibly
encounter. You'd like them.
Darn. Not a single thing to put on the list of "things Poop Shute knows
something about". Oh, well, I'll still cling to my irrational hope of
eventually finding something.

Yet some adults will exercise out 500 cal and consume pre and post
workout above 1000 and expect to get leaner by doing that.
Shute made sense in pointing out, that common sense still applies here.

All right. I can add something from my own experience. I generally do
not eat simple carbs often. I drink mostly unsweetened tea and coffee,
and do not eat candies on a daily basis. But I found that if I'm
pushing too hard and have a problem with recovery, like having several
signs of overreaching, and I stuff myself with several thousands of
simple carb calories, next day I can workout like I never overreached.
It really seems to help me. It feels like all those carbs go straight
to my muscles.

Andrzej, this is misc.fitness.weights, not alt.support.diet.* or
alt.support.porkers.deluded. The original question regarded the timing
of protein intake around resistance training, not general diet
considerations. My comment regarded the addition of carbohydrates and
the appropriate type of carbohydrates for that type of timed protein
intake. General diet considerations and the purposeful self-delusion
of obese people are matters better handled in diet support forums.
People like Shute, who don't know anything about diet except, "sugar is
bad, fat is bad, fruits and veggies are good" should spread their
wisdom in those forums, not here.

Part of which may be the direct effect of muscle glycogen
replenishment, and part of which may be the indirect effect of insulin
release. FWIW, my consumption of simple sugars is similar to yours.
No sugar in my tea or coffee, as well as sugar free drinks and gelatin.
I just happen to have studied the subject deeply enough, and for long
enough, to know that some things that are regarded as universally "bad"
by the simplistic popular diet crowd can actually be beneficial ...
when consumed at the right time. |

Really, John? From your recent cross-posting efforts one might've
assumed this was uk.rec.bodybuilding, rec.arts.bodyart,
rec.motorcycles.harley, or rec.sport.rugby.union.
POS hypocrite.
Oh, yes, Andrzej, my apologies. I realize you aren't soliciting and
don't necessarily appreciate my assistance (or whiiiiining), but, hey,
"credit" where credit's due, I say.
