| | | Protein Powder I know we're all looking for decent flavors of protein, so when you
find one you should post it!
I have 2 flavors that are pretty good, but both are really just good
with milk. GNC brand Mixed Berry is one, and Chocolate Caramel is the
other.
Chocolate Caramel is OK with water, but a thousand times better with
milk. IMO, Mixed Berry tastes like cheap toothpaste when mixed with
water.
Lately, I've been switching back and forth, so that I won't get tired
of the flavor as quickly. GNC did have buy-one-get-one-half-off for
Gold Club members (roughly translating to a 34% discount), so they
were relatively inexpensive, but now it's just a flat 20% discount
across the board so it's not quite as good of a discount.
On a similar note, if you haven't bought a Blender Bottle yet, you
should. It's well worth the $5, and it makes mixing protein a heck of
a lot easier. |

Try mixing a vanilla powder with sugar free cool-aid.
Sometimes a couple of packets of artificial creamer can add a lot of
flavor without adding calories, but I'm a bit cautious over "fake foods"
like that.

I only buy GNC stuff when I make extra $ that week. But just today I
bought 5lbs of the Chocolate/Caramel for $30 after Gold Card and sale
discounts. A rare, good deal for GNC!

If you're 400 lbs, perhaps you should seek a low-carb powder instead.

I personally like "Isopure". Their orange-pineapple flavor is just fine

A gram of protien, is a gram of protien, and is usually more useful
when it is found with its bilological support system, ie eggs etc.
Would you buy a pair of solid gold dumbells expecting better results?
As a kid, I remember looking in awe at all the fantastic supplements
in the old Weider and Hoffman magazines. I never forgot the words from

How does that compare with the same gram per dollar for eggs, given
there is about 6gms per egg?

gram for gram, powders are sometimes cheaper than "real" food.

You'd have to calculate that in grams per serving, then divide by the
price.
The problem with eggs is, a lot of people throw the yolk away reducing
it to 4 grams per egg. :-P Reduces the nutritional value too.

The last time I bought protein powder it worked out to about $0.01 per
gram. Of course, I don't buy the fancy GNC stuff.

It's 76 grams per dollar. Unless your eggs cost eight cents each, it's
better value.
Of course, it doesn't have all the bilological support systems.

I've done some of the real cheap brands but had concerns over the
quality. And honestly I didn't mind spending the extra $10 a week to

Taste is all too variable. I loooove ON whey's Cookie's N Creme, but
I'm in the minority by a landslide if you go by one poll I read.
People generally hate it.
Syntha 6 by BSN makes a chocolate and also a moca something that I
liked a lot, too.
Vanilla Isolyze by Species Nutrition is a great protein powder
according to my tongue anyway.
I will agree with you on advocating Blender Bottles. Those things are
the bomb. I have three. You close it and shake it like crazy and it
will NEVER splatter a portion of your drink out the top of a loose
lid. I've never used their spiral ball, but that seems like a useful
component - just don't like that extra clean up.
Blender Bottle: http://www.blenderbottle.com/
And five bucks? I thought I paid eight at GNC! D'OH! Oh, well, a fool
and his money...

It's protein. Go by a gram-for-gram "look see" or analysis. Get the
best buy and drink up. What costs more - a steak or a protein drink.
You can't eat seven steak or chicken breast meals in a day.
> a wily old trainer, who told me "they are designed to build profits,

That is one rockin' quote though. And, for the most part, a truism,
however that doesn't mean that protein powders are always a bad idea.
Get your best value and grow.

I've also mixed a tablespoon of International Coffee with unflavored
protein and thought it was pretty good. It added around 70 calories to
it, though, so regular instant coffee would have probably been more
logical.
I recently tried mixing sugar-free caramel with unflavored and thought
it was good, but that was more on a whim. The sugar-free caramel still
has carbs and calories, so it's not really a good idea; honestly, I
was just going through my leftover protein and getting rid of the
unflavored kind that I really didn't like. |

I tried the Isopure drink that someone mentioned earlier, and it's
pretty good. A little on the bland side, like drinking a carbonated
juice drink that has set out for a few days, but palatable. I liked
the Blue Raspberry best so far.
Also, the Pro Slam is good, and goes down fast. They're expensive,
though, at close to $3 for 45g (if you buy a case of 12), so I can't
use them all the time. The lemon lime is the best tasting protein I've
had, though.

You mean the little whisk thing that goes in it? Buddy, you're really
missing out! I shake my protein really hard about 10 times, and that's
it. That little whisk just blends it right up.
After I use it, I just rinse it out with hot water, then turn it
upside down and let it dry for the next time. I throw it in the
dishwasher every other day or so.

I think I'm just lucky in that my local GNC isn't all that popular.
About every other month, my local GNC has killer specials on things. I
picked up 2 blender bottles for $5 each, I picked up several cases of
Pro Slams for $20 each (that's a case of 12, so that comes down to
$1.66 each; almost half price), and a 5lb container of protein powder
for $20 or $25. If you just catch them when they're wanting to move
some product, you can luck out and get some good deals! |

Well, if you are an Atkins follower, some pure whipping cream would work
best to add the richness you want. :-) Just avoid sugar and starch when
you try it? <g>

I've not tried that one. At least they offer other flavors. One gets
sick to death of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry after awhile!

Never tried that. I tend to get the gallon jugs of powder when I'm not
focusing on real food.
IMHO protein powders are "lazy" food, but I don't object to them. ;-)
Lives can be a bit busy sometimes.

I love them too, with the right powder. Cheap ones (cheap powders) tend
to pack around the blades.

I leave it upside down in my locker at work with a quick dry from paper
towels.
