My place of work has been giving away flu shots, so I asked to take a
look at their label. The amount is 25 mcg of ethyl-mercury per adult
vaccine. If it was methyl-mercury, the amount would be way above
anything you could get from eating copious amounts of predator fish
and such food that normally gets red-flagged.
I did a cursory review, but there seems to be no definite consensus if
a dosage such as this is nothing to worry about. I'm far from being
alarmed about poisoning from getting a flu shot, but since I don't
normally get flu anyway, I'm still trying to decide if I should get
the shot. If it was preservative-free, I'd definitely get it.
Any advice? |

I'd eat glass shards if it had a chance of stopping me from getting the
flu. I shove old ladies in walkers out of my way to make sure I get my
flu shot before they run out. Mercury? Ha! I laugh at mercury. Gimme
that damn shot.
If you ever get the flu you'll know what I mean.

The website itself is a seriously flawed source of info, though the
sources it cites are good. The Cochrane quote is good, but it shows
that the studies were flawed and don't tell you anything, not that
vaccines don't work. (But it does imply that we don't know if vaccines
work. You get to choose what you like to believe.)

2003-2004 was a fuck up.
I never thought it protected me from all influenza. Last year I got a
late season B even though I'd had the flu shot the previous winter. I'm
saying I'm willing to take a shot in the arm to reduce my chances by
25%. You might decide differently. But I've been hit by that train and
I don't plan to stand in the tracks ever again.
And "rarely effective" where "but users die less often" isn't really all
that much of an indictment, overall.
For more reading try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flu_vaccine and note: I'm getting a shot
that will help again H1N1. Not because I think I'm likely to get H1N1,
but because I will do anything on earth to make sure I never do!

According to the CDC my age puts me at high risk for complications
from the flu....so therefore I should get the shot. But I won't
because I'm not convinced that these shots are effective.
It comes down to whether or not you think that you can avoid the flu
or minimize its effects by taking certain steps to maintain good
health. That's what I intend to do.
There is a scientific consensus that thimerosal in vaccines doesn't
cause autism, but the controversy persists.
Here's an interesting article on mercury from the National Institute
of Allergy and Infectious Disease: http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/thimerosalqa.htm |

Here's one more story - my doctor and my kids' doctor both said that the
flu shot is now _not_ recommended to people who have an adverse reaction
to it. That's me. I fee like s#$% for weeks after getting the shot
every year, so this year I'm not getting it, although my wife and kids
are. I'm supposedly high-risk because I had a bad case of pneumonia a
few years ago.
Nothing about mercury in my story but, hey, this is mfw, right?

I'm no longer at risk of developing autism, since I'm older
than 3.

So in summary, ethyl-mercury has lower binding properties and thus
lower potential for accumulation in tissues than methyl-mercury.
That's good, only that the brain seems to be an exception. As the
article says, ethyl-mercury exposure leaves more deposits of inorganic
mercury in the brain. If I keep doing flu shots over the years, that
may start interfering with pull-ups. |

Aw, hell, when I was a kid, we used to play with mercury with our bare
hands. Of course, only the kids like Curt would actually eat the
stuff. Anything for attention, y'know. |

I would probably eat mercury from thermometers as a kid, but I knew
from the Russian history lessons that one can easily become addicted:
"Ivan [the Terrible] also became addicted to the ingestion of mercury,
which he kept bubbling in small pots in his room for his consumption." http://novaonline.nvcc.edu/eli/evans...s/IvanCTE.html |

You've only had the flu twice? Anyhoo, I got my first flu shot this

Actually, I did go bench afterwards. My arm was a bit sore the next
day, but nothing worse than DOMS might be.
And, yes, I've only had the flu twice. I've certainly had upper
respiratory viruses more often than that, but influenza is NOT the cold.
You know it's not the cold because the cold never makes you think
there's a realistic probability that you're going to die. The flu
leaves me shaking and shivering with temperatures over 103 for a week to
ten days, with weeks of recovery time needed afterwards. And if you
happen to have viral-triggered asthma like I do, well, you get the added
attraction of having your lungs shut down.
FWIW, I discovered last spring how wonderful ephedrine HCl is for
treatment of the wracking rib-splitting coughing spasms that you can get
with the flu. It worked beautifully to stop the spasms. In fact, it's
the only "cough medicine" I've ever seen actually work somewhat (aside
from codeine products.)

Well, I think you can have varying amounts of sickness with the flu. I
haven't gotten the flu for a while though. I used to get strep throat
really bad as a kid. So bad I couldn't even stand up but I haven't
had it for many years now.
